7412Date place and publisher not stated. London: R. Ackermann 1813. On a piece of good wove paper roughly 415 x 260 mm. Dimensions of engraving 180 x 220 mm. On aged paper and with the margins of the leaf trimmed. Laid down along the right hand margin runs a strip of blue paper 30 x 410 mm which it may be possible for a professional restorer to remove. This edges the border of the print which is clear and entire and overlaps a few letters of the text. Neatly coloured in sombre tones. Beneath the print is the title which ends 'at Leipsic and its environs.' and beneath the title is an eleven-line section of text headed 'THE TWO KINGS OF TERROR.' beginning 'THIS Subject representing the two Tyrants viz. the Tyrant BONAPARTE and the Tyrant DEATH sitting together on the Field of Battle'. Death is seated on a cannon with one foot on a pile of cannonballs and the other on a broken French eagle facing a dejected Bonaparte seated on a drum. In the background the massed ranks of the allies their four flags flying drive the retreating French from the field. The final four-line paragraph reads 'The above description of the subject appeared in the Sun of Saturday the 6th of November. These pointed comments arose from the picture being transparent and from a Circle indicative of the strength and brotherly union of the Allies which surmounted the same composed of gas of brilliant brightness.' The journal was increasingly vocal in its oppossition to Louis-Philippe and was seized more than twelve times. This black & White advertisement for this Danish Chewing Tobacco Company depicts a donkey pulling a cart with 2 Africans one of which is holding a long stick dangling a pack of chewing tobacco in front of the donkey. Striking collection of 11 silver gelatin prints of Vicky's Victor Weisz caricatures of Hitler in his series: "Hitler as seen by." <br /> <br /> This humorous series portrays the Führer as seen by some of the most famous personalities of the period such as: Pablo Picasso Franklin Delano Roosevelt Albert Einstein Neville Chamberlain .and himself! Hitler is also portrayed as seen by women; by the German Reichswehr; by one part of the German nation Hitler is idealized as one of Richard Wagner's valkyries!; by the other part of the German nation here Hitler is portrayed as a tyrant holding a long whip; by the French military staff and by the inhabitants of ex-German colonies.<br /> <br /> The photographs' size varies from 7 1/2 x 10 1/2" to 8 1/8 x 11 1/4". Each silver gelatin print has a typed captioned label pasted at verso.<br /> <br /> Minor and sporadic creasing and tiny chipping along edges not affecting illustrations. Photographs in overall good to very good condition. Born in Berlin of Hungarian-Jewish parents Victor Weisz 1913-1966 began art studies at the Berlin Kunstschule but had to leave when his father killed himself in 1928. In order to make a living he began having his cartoons published in German newspapers. As a member of the Jewish community with socialist political opinions Weisz decided to leave Germany after Adolf Hitler gained power. He arrived in London in 1935 and found work as a political cartoonist with a variety of newspapers and journals including the "News Chronicle" "the Daily Mirror" the "Daily Mail" the "New Statesman" and the "Evening Standard." By the 1940s Weisz who signed his work Vicky had established himself as Britain's leading left-wing cartoonist. Like his father he took his own life in 1966. NP unknown

Generally in decent order one or two slightly creased with small closed tears a few with small nicks and tears a couple with blu-tack staining to corners. Slight external rubbing; internally clean tight and unmarked with mild toning to text; a sound Very Good or better copy. <br /> <br /> An indispensable biographical reference to minstrel performers of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Rice 1871-1938 himself the son of a noted blackface performer became not only a performing minstrel but also a producer impresario and noted scholar of the history of minstrelsy. He published no fewer than four books on the subject and the current work remains the only comprehensive contemporary biographical encyclopedia of the minstrel stage including many lesser-known performers whose names have by now been all but lost to history. This copy is inscribed to one such performer Arthur Moreland a successful dramatic actor who made the shift to minstrelsy in the mid-1870s and of whom Rice states: ".he has long been recognized as the premier interlocutor a stock character in blackface shows serving the role of Master of Ceremonies and straight man in minstrelsy and the legitimate successor of Wm. H. Bernard who retired in 1872." Quite a nice copy of a book which while never especially uncommon is seldom encountered in nice condition. We have seen very few signed or inscribed examples.<br /> <br /> NOTE: This volume includes hundreds of photographic portraits of its subjects many of which can only be described as deeply offensive. Indeed there is no escaping the offensiveness of blackface performance. Yet despite the supremacist and subjugational roots of minstrelsy its lasting impact on American literary theatrical and musical culture is also undeniable. As the most popular form of stage entertainment in America from roughly the 1870s to the 1920s minstrelsy unquestionably shaped and reflected American middle-brow attitudes towards race but it also served as a gateway to legitimate African-American musical and dramatic expression as well as establishing many of the conventions for vaudeville and by extension modern comedic performance. At Lorne Bair Rare Books we generally don't handle intentionally discriminatory or racist materials unless we feel they offer legitimate avenues for research. They not only mock the Nazi leaders the defeated German army and their Serbian collaborators but also King Peter II of Yugoslavia deposed by the Yugoslavia's Communist Constituent Assembly on 29 November 1945 and the Orthodox church. The post-WWII caricatures aim at mocking the American and West European leaders as well as the whole capitalist system. Rare book not listed on OCLC. Moderate age-toning and minor creasing on wrappers. Closed tear at lower margin of title page. Moderate foxing and age-toning along paper margin. Text in Serbian.
