1938167358San Francisco: Popular Mechanics and G.G.I.E. Committee 1938. 12p 6.5x9.5 inches eight pages in colors some two-color some almost-full-colorvery good offprint booster campaign booklet get-em into the tent in stapled blue pictorial wraps stapled rusty title page a full-color illustration of a model of the South gardens with title above: Treasure Island of 1939" This specially bound reprint of an article from the may issue of Popular Mechanics Magazine is indicative of the nation-wide interest in the 1939 World's Fair on San Francisco Bay as demonstrated by one of America's major publications. Mostly distance views imaginary or enhanced including two of modellers reaching into their miniaturized domains. The most curious image is a multicolor aerial view of Treasure Island AFTER the exhibit building have been demolished and the whole artifice turned into radiating runways separated by huge green lawns: "When the fair is finished the man-made island will become the airport pictured here" --a bad idea that didn't get better. 1938222981San Francisco: The Monitor 1938. Magazine. Section Two" only evidently the expo-dedicated portion of this issue of the long-lived Roman Catholic periodical. Folio magazine softbound of course stapled 17x11 illustrated wraps sepia cover drawing joins TI tower and Ferry Building images 40p. coated alkaline paperstock throughout with plenty of b&w illustrations and ads. Be warned find minimal Expo material most pix are of old Franciscan churches over boilerplate text. Item is bent along top and bottom margins packing problems for tall vulnerable thingie with crimpings and some creasing there's a half-inch food lump on cover that goes thru to verso a basically as-is good-only copy that would flatten nicely under weight. Pious boosterism; for instance PG&E took out an ad bannered "Electrical Miracles In Store For Exposition Visitors" referring to anticipated gorgeous lighting effects has a so-so b&w illustration linking lit-up nighttime SF to the nearby lit-up island. 1893186002Chicago: the exposition; Printed in Germany 1893. Single long leaf of light cardstock about 6.5x35 inches long recto printed with heavily glazed b&w lithos and folded to 6.5x3.25 inches; images at either end are laid down on stiff cloth boards which enclose the concertina'd views. Upper boards is decorated with lady showing one breast and a cupid clutching a US shield-thingie. A poor-to-fair exemplar; the cardstock is quite acidic and fragile and while it supports individual images well enough has split away from both covers with one ragged loss and further splits are developing. Complete as called for with all faults. The scenes are exclusively of buildings little sailing craft negotiating the lagoon-grid one armored gunboat and trees with people shown as dots. the exposition; Printed in Germany unknown books
