Original plain blue-gray wrappers lower corner of front wrapper lightly creased; boxed. Minor foxing but fine otherwise.

First Edition of the catalogue of the First Official Public National Industrial Exposition the forerunner of all subsequent "World's Fairs" and international expositions. In 1797 the Marquis d'Avèze an official of the French Republican government visited the factories of Sèvres china Gobelins tapestries and Savonnerie carpets and was appalled to find the factory workshops deserted their artisans starving and their warehouses filled with luxury goods that had no commercial outlet. "It then occurred to the marquis that if these and other objects of industry of the national manufactures could be collected together in one large exhibition a stimulus might be given to the native industry and thus relief be afforded to the suffering workmen. The plan was approved by M. François de Neufchâteau the Minister of the Interior" Tomlinson p. ii. Due to political difficulties the exhibition was not held until the following year. After a highly successful preliminary showing at the Maison d'Orsay the French government built a "Temple of Industry" on the Champ de Mars surrounded by 60 arcades filled with useful and decorative objects by French manufacturers. "The Exhibition remained open only during the last three complimentary days of the year VI of the Republic; but it excited the greatest enthusiasm throughout the country. The merits of the several exhibitors were entrusted to the decision of a jury composed of nine men distinguished in science and in art; and this plan was found to work so well that it was continued in subsequent Expositions" Tomlinson p. iii. Rare—OCLC cites only three copies all in French libraries. A second issue of the catalogue expanded to 30 pages was issued at Grenoble in the same year. 1915List1003Chicago: National Half Century Anniversary Exposition and Lincoln Jubilee 1915. Felt pennant measuring 38 x 15 inches. Lettering slightly faded very good condition overall. In celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of Lincoln's death the city of Chicago hosted the National Half Century Anniversary Exposition and Lincoln Jubilee to celebrate emancipation and the cultural achievements of African-Americans. The event was held at the Coliseum on August 23 - September 22 1915. The Illinois legislature appropriated $75000 for the month-long celebration. Seventeen states appointed African American delegates to attend the event as representatives. Delegates from other countries participated as well. Bishop Samuel Fallows the English-born clergyman and Union Army Colonel spent a decade promoting and organizing the event urging states such as New York to appoint representatives and encouraging Chicago's religious leaders to attend. Several hundred pastors from African-American churches did attend along with members of their congregations and most contemporary accounts of the jubilee advertise speeches by African-American religious leaders. Charles F. Gunther a local candy manufacturer and collector of Lincoln memorabilia lent his collection to the event it was later purchased by the Chicago Historical Society. The event's organizers anticipated close to half a million attendees. Though we find no record of actual attendance contemporary reports show crowds of tens of thousands attending at a time.
The Colored Women's Civic League closed the exposition with a ceremony involving children.

Despite the large undertaking and historical significance of the event few relics of the exhibition have survived. OCLC lists two copies of the official program for the event. The official report of the event History and Report of the Exhibition and Celebration to Commemorate the Fiftieth Anniversary of the Emancipation of the Negro has around 20 holdings. We find no other record of this commemorative pennant an unusual survival. Condition is very good with some light wear. National Half Century Anniversary Exposition and Lincoln Jubilee unknown books

The fair included a reconstruction of the Bastille and its surrounding neighborhood but with the interior courtyard covered with a blue ceiling decorated with fleur-de-lys and used as a ball room and gathering place.

The main symbol of the Fair was the Eiffel Tower which served as the entrance arch to the Fair. Since the lifts had not been completed when the Exposition opened the first visitors had to walk up to the second floor platform. Workers had worked through the night the day before the exhibition opened to complete the necessary construction needed to safely allow patrons to set foot upon the structure. When speaking of the dedicated workers M. Salles the son-in-law of Eiffel made the statement that "no soldier on the battle field deserved better mention than these humble toilers who will never go down in history. unknown books
