1893186002Chicago: the exposition; Printed in Germany 1893. Single long leaf of light cardstock about 6.5x35 inches long recto printed with heavily glazed b&w lithos and folded to 6.5x3.25 inches; images at either end are laid down on stiff cloth boards which enclose the concertina'd views. Upper boards is decorated with lady showing one breast and a cupid clutching a US shield-thingie. A poor-to-fair exemplar; the cardstock is quite acidic and fragile and while it supports individual images well enough has split away from both covers with one ragged loss and further splits are developing. Complete as called for with all faults. The scenes are exclusively of buildings little sailing craft negotiating the lagoon-grid one armored gunboat and trees with people shown as dots. the exposition; Printed in Germany unknown books

Delicate condition with a 1/4 x 1.5 inch chip missing from all pages in the volume not affecting text and an additional chip to the front wrapper. A scarce and detailed guide to the many features of the Moorish Palace at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair. These included a palm garden "enhanced by groups of Arabs" a replica of the Alhambra a harem a labyrinth a cave a "monster kaleidoscope" and an extensive wax museum. The guide describes 60 figures and scenes appearing in the museum among them the Lincoln assasintation the fountain of youth Christ and the Samartian Martin Luther Sleeping Beauty Shakespeare Mozart Queen Victoria Pope Leo XIII Napoleon and George Washington. 1938222981San Francisco: The Monitor 1938. Magazine. Section Two" only evidently the expo-dedicated portion of this issue of the long-lived Roman Catholic periodical. Folio magazine softbound of course stapled 17x11 illustrated wraps sepia cover drawing joins TI tower and Ferry Building images 40p. coated alkaline paperstock throughout with plenty of b&w illustrations and ads. Be warned find minimal Expo material most pix are of old Franciscan churches over boilerplate text. Item is bent along top and bottom margins packing problems for tall vulnerable thingie with crimpings and some creasing there's a half-inch food lump on cover that goes thru to verso a basically as-is good-only copy that would flatten nicely under weight. Pious boosterism; for instance PG&E took out an ad bannered "Electrical Miracles In Store For Exposition Visitors" referring to anticipated gorgeous lighting effects has a so-so b&w illustration linking lit-up nighttime SF to the nearby lit-up island.
