190163092Buffalo NY & Chicago IL: Mackson; Lyman 1901. Archive of 46 original albumen photographs sized from 3 x 6 in. up to 4 x 6 in. all of the images smaller than 4 x 5 in. on albumen paper stock many w/ embossed photographer’s stamps several w/ photographer’s imprint w/in negative some w/ small rubber stamp at lower fore-edge of verso as well as pencil manuscript annotations identifying subject inventory nos. w/ in negatives of several a few w/ evidence of having been previously mounted a couple w/very slight dog-eared corners 1 w/ closed tear at lower fore-edge a couple w/ image evidencing poor process chemicals still an exceptional group of images. This set of photographs was created by two different Illinois & Missouri photographers at the 1901 Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo NY -- both of whom had lived and worked in Chicago at the beginning of the 1890’s offering reasonably priced “unofficial†vernacular images of the 1893 Columbian Exposition World’s Fair followed by the Pan-American World’s Fair. The fair featured a range of acts and attractions featured at the Exposition which included Bostock’s Trained Wild Animals “A Trip to the Moon†“Cleopatra’s Temple†Henry Roltair’s illusionist show “House upside down†and the Battle of Missionary Ridge Cyclorama. Many of the Exposition buildings including the prominent Electric Tower were covered in approximately 2 million 100 watt incandescent light bulbs producing an incredible display when turned on each night attracting millions of people who visited. This Exposition marked a defining moment in Buffalo history with the city becoming the focus of international architectural artistic technological and industrial attention at the Fair. It is sadly largely remembered as the scene of the tragic assassination of President McKinley. Vernacular souvenir photos are quite scarce and these have an unusual sharpness in light of the fact that like the 1893 Columbian all were prevented from bringing in tripods to shoot the Exposition. One of the photographs captures African natives from the Midway’s “African Village†which incorporated Africans from the colonial empires of Great Britain Belgium Germany & France along with participants from Georgia who were “staged†in the “Old Plantation†representing the enslavement of African-Americans in North America. Another Black History exhibit included was the “Negro Exhibit†previously exhibited at the 1900 L’Exposition Universelle in Paris depicting the accomplishments of formerly enslaved people and languished at the far back of the Manufacturers and Liberal Arts Building. Samuel Lyman 1854-1939 was an intrepid tinkerer junk dealer and photographer who shot souvenir photos for his customers during the Columbian Exposition in 1893. Two of his sons Joseph Lyman 1887-1953 and Harry Lyman 1883-1940 became successful photographers in Kansas City MO during the Roaring 20’s. Mackson fl. 1885-1910 immigrated from Russia into Chicago in the 1880’s and operated a small photo studio there until about 1900 before relocating to Kansas City and St. Louis MO during the opening decade of the 20th Century operating photography studios in both cities. 19321603
Cover title : "Les Artistes Musicalistes se Présentent" Approximately 40 pp. 1 glossy plate in color ; illus. in black and white with texts in French including manifestos and lists of works by member artists. Oblong 8vo. Very good. Saddle stapled silver foil wrappers printed in red surfaces a bit rubbed and oxidized but surprisingly bright. 1603

Catalog for the December 1932 - January 1933 presentation at Galerie de la Renaissance in Paris including works by Maurice Barret Gustave Bourgogne Jean Carlu Da Silva Bruhns Arne Hosek Henri Valensi and others. The book is striking production with dynamic typography and page designs throughout including an attractive application of Cassandre's "Le Bifur" on the reflective metallic covers. According to our own rough translation the group's manifesto ""It is clear to everyone that the key characters of the beginning of this century are: the applications of science and generalized dynamism which bring into their orbit : rhythm harmony synthesis etc. etc. However the art offering the most dynamism rhythm harmony science synthesis. is Music. For this we realize here that from the aesthetic point of view the musical spirit predominates. Thus we demand "Art must be musicalized". In reality this influence of Music has already developed but unconsciously in all the arts among all artists who can say they are 'sensitive and creative' and simultaneously in several countries." 181952180Portland OR: n.p. July 18 1902. One panoramic silver gelatin photograph printed on matte finish thick photographic stock sized 8 x 24 in. preserved in the original dark stained wood frame sized 10.25 x 26.5 in. with very faint title inscription in white ink below image in clear cursive hand very minor damage & loss to the very lower right corner of image still VG copy expertly cleaned with new archival backing. This exceedingly scarce original photograph records the site selection inspection by the Lewis & Clark Exposition Board of Directors July 18 1902 the day after the Site Subcommittee had recommended on July 17 1902 that the Board choose City Park for the Exposition site. In fact many different sites were proposed at the meeting including Henry Corbett’s preference for City park while the Ladd interests advocated for a site along Hawthorne Boulevard. Nonetheless the Board adjourned into executive session and as a result of a last minute proposal by Henry Dosch it decided that they would examine the Guild’s Lake site in detail as evidenced by this photograph showing the several board members standing upon the Electric Railway line tracks on the Willamette Heights next to the land proposed for development by the Scottish-American Investment Company. When the Board reconvened after an August hiatus the vote was 6-2 in favor of Guild’s Lake. Robert Livingstone who owned the Scottish-American Investment Company set about with his real estate development partners Russell & Blyth to build a group of Arts & Crafts homes designed by Emil Schacht in the Willamette Heights subdivision which would inspire Portland residential architecture in the decades following the Exposition. Peter Guild 1797-1870 led his family over the Oregon Trail in 1847 lost a herd of cattle to the Oregon Territorial militia during the Cayuse Indian War and eventually homesteaded on Guild’s Lake constructing a large octagon block house which proved to be a very popular Public House and later the site for the 1905 Lewis & Clark Exposition.
