Aged and worn in lightly-stained card covers carrying six Bewick woodcuts in black with text lengthwise and upwards in red. The insides of the covers are red in colour and on the front inside cover is written 'love from Sim & Arnold'. Whether the hand is Rattenbury's or his wife's is not clear. Fourteen poems from 'Considering K 279 to K 284' to 'Koechel's Adoration'. John Lucas in his Guardian obituary 30 July 2007 singles out the present item as Rattenbury's finest poetic achievement: 'As a poet Arnold thought naturally in sequences and possibly the finest of these is Mozart Pieces a series of sonnets which began life in the early 1970s and which he went on adding to for the rest of his life.' Laid in are a series of five cards addressed to the Courtice's with four signed by A.Y. Jackson signed "Alex" and "Uncle Alex". Rody Kenny Courtice born Roselyn Margaret Kenny; 1891 1973 was a Canadian painter and teacher. She was associated with the Group of Seven early in her career but later moved away into a more individualistic style. 1911100851Souvenir pamphlet 8vo colored printed pictorial wrappers illustrated 16 pp. Folded and creased down the middle with a little wear at the fold some minor rubbing to wrappers normal aging; otherwise very good. This is a scarce piece of ephemera commemorating the 1911 groundbreaking ceremony by President William H. Taft for the exhibition in the Golden Gate Park. While the purpose of the exhibition was to celebrate the completion of the Panama Canal it seemed to function more as a worlds fair held in San Francisco. It took over three years to construct and the exhibition ran from February through December 1915. There are a number of black and white photographs in the booklet including a double page panoramic view of the city of San Francisco. The activities of the ceremony are recorded in this pamphlet which feature speakers songs marches and what they had for dinner Blair-Murdock Co.,

Seven souvenir albumen cabinet card photos chronicling the third great Paris World’s Fair proclaiming through pomp and events that the Third Republic had rebounded from the Franco-Prussian War and the Commune Revolt. The Exposition was far larger than any previously held occupying over 66 acres featuring an Avenue des Nations elaborate exhibition palaces the completed head of the Statue of Liberty and the first Exposition to feature outdoor electric lighting with massive arc lights. These images include the an updated public aquarium featuring undersea grottoes inspired by Jules Verne stories the Palais de Trocadero the Palais du Champ de Mars statue of the Republic the Galerie du Travail showing stoves weaving machines and more; as well as the statuary in the Grande Galerie Italienne. Etienne Neurdein 1832-after 1915 and his brother Louis Antonin 1840-after 1915 were intrepid traveling photographers throughout French Northern Africa particularly the Sahara and Algeria in the 1870’s and also known for portraiture and monuments photos. They were later awarded the status as official photographers of both 1889 and 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle. Wrappers. <strong>The first 21 pages of the present catalogue contain a notice on Spanish painting. </strong>Don Alejandro María Aguado y Ramírez de Estenoz 1st Marquis de Las Marismas del Guadalquivir Seville June 29 1784 Gijon April 14 1842 Spanish banker was born of Old Christian parentage originally from La Rioja at Seville. He began life as a soldier fighting with distinction in the Spanish War of Independence first against French then on the side of Joseph Bonaparte. After the Battle of Baylen 1808 he entered the French army in which he rose to be colonel and aide-de-camp to Marshal Soult. He was exiled in 1815 and immediately started business as a commission-agent in Paris where chiefly through his family connections in Havana and Mexico he acquired in a few years enough wealth to enable him to undertake banking. The Spanish government gave him full powers to negotiate the loans of 1823 1828 1830 and 1831; and Ferdinand VII. rewarded him with the title of marquis the decorations of several orders and valuable mining concessions in Spain. Aguado also negotiated the Greek loan of 1834. In 1828 having become possessed of large estates in France including the Château Margaux famous for its wine he was naturalized as a French citizen. He died at in Spain on April 14 1842 leaving a fortune 'computed at 60000000 francs and a splendid collection of pictures which at his death was sold by auction.</p>

Her Southern sensibilities were shocked at seeing a white woman at the same table with a black man. Turns out he was a minister from Haiti and the lady was his wife. Miss Woods saw the Paris Exposition several times; saw Sarah Bernhardt perform; saw President Kruger of South Africa; saw a street where Jews were not allowed to come out after 6pm; describes fancy balls and dinners; shopping for clothes.much of interest. The Centennial Board of Commissioners awarded the sole license for photography at the exposition just prior to the exhibition to Edward L. Wilson editor of The Philadelphia Photographer who partnered with his good friend William Notman a Scottish-Canadian Photographer as well as Adams of New York and John Fraser. The views included here include the Agricultural Building; Board of Finance Buildings; Machinery Hall interior with the Corliss Engine operating ni the distance; Horticultural Hall along with the Main Entrance and the Exposition grounds. One of the most interesting of the series shows the vast Main Building pavilion under construction with drainage pipes strewn around in the fore-ground while the immense trusses and structural elements slowly march towards the viewer. Most of these images were originally shot by the Centennial Photographic Co. who had proved to be quite successful during the Centennial and the photographers were in great demand through and after the Exhibition which featured over 10 million visitors. Released in a slightly reduced format and licensed out to Underwood & Underwood later Keystone and many others these offered visitors a cut-rate viewing experience. Barker 1844-1894 gained renown originally working for one of Ontario Canada’s leading photographers and later became well-known for his majestic photos of Niagara Falls before a Feb. 1870 destroyed his photo studio although the 800 stereoview negatives were preserved. He later began traveling to shoot views around the United States and released Exposition related images. See: Centennial Photographic Co. Nine scarce and original albumen stereoview photographs detailing the exhibits sights and the sensational lighting effects achieved at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo NY in 1901. Many of the Exposition buildings including the prominent Electric Tower were covered in approximately 2 million 100 watt incandescent light bulbs producing an incredible display when turned on each night attracting millions of people who visited. This Exposition marked a defining moment in Buffalo history with the city becoming the focus of international architectural artistic technological and industrial attention at the Fair. Arnold 1844-1927 was previously the official photographer of the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago and it appears Kilburn contracted to produce and distribute stereoview images using Arnold photos. This guide map of the 5th Domestic Promotion Exposition depicts the layout of the exposition grounds and provides detailed information about the various pavilions. The exposition was held at the site where Tennoji Park now stands. Over 5 million people visited the event between March and July 1903. <br><br>The map highlights agricultural and industrial pavilions along with a pavilion showcasing a refrigeration machine. The Taiwan pavilion features produce from the recently acquired territory. Displays of local produce and numerous food stalls offered entertainment and refreshments for visitors.
