189050922NY: Radtke Lauckner & Co 1890. Single sheet of thin laid paper 10 3/8 x8 inches with a copper etching of a rustic cabin on a lake with a sail boat in the background. In holograph on the lower margin is " At Brennan & Davis' Monday & Tuesday Apr 20th & 21st." Faint foxing which is less pronounced than in the scan; else very good. The firm of Radtke Lauckner & Co. were publishers and importers of etchings engravings and photographs located at 6 East 18th Street New York during the 1890's. Apparently they arranged traveling exhibitions of their wares at various locations; this elaborate invitation was for a showing at Brennan & Davis' a jewelry stationery and book store in Bradford Pennsylvania. Alphonse Davanne is a most important figure in the early history of photography. Born 1824 in Paris he was a founding member of the Société Française de Photographie the first photographic society in the world and subsequently its vice president and then president. His early collaborations were involved with photolithography and by 1854 he had mastered that process. His next experiments were on developing a direct positive process. Davanne served as the president of the jury for the photographic section of this International Exhibition.<br /> <br /> Largely concerned with the history cameras and equipment and the latest advances in photomechanical processes etc. <br /> <br /> Roosens and Salu No. 3697. 18513220148<p><em>Lithograph strip panorama consisting of four sheets conjoined measuring 12 x 230 cm overall some light dust-soiling in places; folding into publisher's original boards the upper cover with an illustration of a showman in military attire drumming up an audience for a show consisting of a Punch and Judy-style booth with what appear curiously to be marionettes rather than glove-puppets dancing on the stage spine expertly repaired covers slightly marked but nevertheless still a good example.</em></p><p>Rare panorama consisting of 75 captioned vignettes of the people of many nationalities idly wasting time or misbehaving themselves in mostly harmless ways: "A Highland Gentleman practising the Art of Boozing" "John Bull sleeping on the National Debt" "A Hindoo Gentleman enjoying Hookah" "Young Irish Lady doing penance by walking on sharp stones round a well" "A New Zealand Chief polishing the skull of one of his enemies" and so on. It concludes with 'A French Patriot playing Battledoor i.e. battledore & Shuttlecock' the character hitting two crowns and a bonnet-rouge into the air.</p><p>Although unsigned the artist for the work is clearly Benjamin Clayton 1809-1883 what little we know of him comes mainly from his daughter the writer and artist Ellen Creathorne 1834-1900. Benjamin was born in Dublin but moved his family to London in 1841 hoping to be a history painter however his gifts lay instead with illustration firstly producing his own periodicals gChatg and gPunchinello. A journal of wit wisdom and romanceg but later having to work for other publishers first with Ackermann & Co. and later for Dean and Son.</p><p>The publisher George Mann at 39 Cornhill together with Dean & Son issued several panoramas at the time of the Great Exhibition the partnership ending with Mann's death in 1852.</p> Dean & Son, Printers. One albumen stereoview photograph sized 5.75 x 3.25 in. mounted on beige studio board sized 7 x 3.5 in. w/ photographer’s imprint and caption on the board VG exemplar from the library of Prof. Marvin Nathan. An unusually scarce original albumen stereoview photograph capturing the prize-winning stand of decorative art glass offered by the famed Victorian china and glass manufacturer’s W.P. & G. Phillips located on Oxford Street & New Bond Street. They catered to a well-to-do class of clients and their displays offered intricate and beautifully made designs. The Great London Exhibition of 1862 emulated the original 1851 Crystal Palace Great Exhibition featured over 28000 participating vendors and set on the present site of the Natural History Museum and Science Museum in London’s South Kensington. Woodward 1836-1894 first established himself as a photography dealer and decorative arts and glass dealer in Orange MA before locating his firm in Rochester in 1862 where continued operating under his own imprint before becoming director of the Union View Co. in 1882 producing landscapes and architectural views. Ownership signature on front endpaper of a William John Lafferty Belfast dated 1866. <br /> <br /> A significant work infrequent in commerce. Especially valuable for its coverage of early railway technology an area in which the author was himself expert as he had served as a Consulting Engineer for the Great North of Scotland Railway as early as 1853. The book's four divisions - Railways; Textile Machinery; Metal and Wood Manufacturing Machinery; and "Machinery in General" are each profusely illustrated with both text figures and folding plates. The final plate at end of text is a "General Plan of the Western Annex" where mechanical exhibits were housed. Day & Son unknown
