Twenty-six albumen stereoview photographs 1 coloured sized 5.75 x 3 in. mounted on assorted stereograph boards sized 7 x 3.5 in. many w/ captions faintly w/in negative at lower fore-edge some w/ photographer’s imprint lower fore-edge of board many w/ decorative borders some w/ ink or pencil MS on verso occasional dustsoiling minor edgewear just a couple slightly over-exposed otherwise a good collection from the library of Prof. Marvin Nathan. The Centennial Board of Commissioners awarded the sole license for photography at the exposition just prior to the exhibition to Edward L. Wilson editor of The Philadelphia Photographer who partnered with his good friend William Notman a Scottish-Canadian Photographer as well as Adams of New York and John Fraser. The views included here include the Agricultural Building; Board of Finance Buildings; Machinery Hall interior with the Corliss Engine operating ni the distance; Horticultural Hall along with the Main Entrance and the Exposition grounds. One of the most interesting of the series shows the vast Main Building pavilion under construction with drainage pipes strewn around in the fore-ground while the immense trusses and structural elements slowly march towards the viewer. Most of these images were originally shot by the Centennial Photographic Co. who had proved to be quite successful during the Centennial and the photographers were in great demand through and after the Exhibition which featured over 10 million visitors. Released in a slightly reduced format and licensed out to Underwood & Underwood later Keystone and many others these offered visitors a cut-rate viewing experience. Barker 1844-1894 gained renown originally working for one of Ontario Canada’s leading photographers and later became well-known for his majestic photos of Niagara Falls before a Feb. 1870 destroyed his photo studio although the 800 stereoview negatives were preserved. He later began traveling to shoot views around the United States and released Exposition related images. See: Centennial Photographic Co. All reports related to the 400th anniversary of the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus given by various governmental or academic committees documenting French participation in the exposition celebrating the same in Madrid and Huelva the Spanish port from which Columbus departed. Some with manuscript signatures or dedications from the author to the Marquis de Croizier. Volume presumably from Croizierâ€™s library. One see above Laville with photographic prints tipped in. Generally very good with boards rubbed corners bent one pamphlet tearing at fore-edge. OCLC finds no or fewer than five North American holdings for most reports one unrecorded. unknown

Millet 1848-1912 displayed work at the 1893 Columbian Exposition and died with the Titanic; Mitchell 1845-1918 was a publisher architect & artist who records his observations of Fair visitors; Low 1853-1932 was a noted Albany NY muralist and Barbizon landscape painter; Gibson 1850-1896 was a noted magazine artist and natural history illustrator whose illustrations graced Harperâ€™s Weekly Scribnerâ€™s Monthly and Century magazines and noted for his drawings of the buildings and landscape at the 1893 Worldâ€™s Fair published by Scribnerâ€™s; Smith 1838-1915 traveled extensively exhibited later at the 1901 Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo and also had contributed earlier to the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. Seventeen albumen photographs mounted sized from 7 x 8 up to 7 x 8.5 in. on 9.5 x 8 in. printed studio board photographerâ€™s imprint w/in negative of image and lower corners of board titles imprinted at lower blank board of each image Columbian Exposition medal stamped on versos minor edgewear slight rubbing very minor over-exposure on a few images still a VG bright set of original images. A group of very scarce mounted souvenir albumen photographs shot at the Worldâ€™s Columbian Exposition in 1893 when patrons carrying small Kodak cameras were required to pay $ 2.00 license fee to bring a camera onto the grounds and no cameras or tripods able to shoot larger than 4 x 5 in. images were allowed. Most visitors bought the printed photo album versions wealthier ones would buy entire souvenir photo albums filled with Arnold images and yet others could buy them as individual mounted shots depicting their favorite or preferred venues. The 1893 Chicago Worldâ€™s Fair ran almost six months featured grounds and gardens laid out by Fredrick Olmsted covering 630 acres and a Midway skyline dominated by the 250-foot Ferris wheel designed by George Ferris which could carry 2160 patrons when fully loaded. The â€œOn the Midwayâ€ photo shows the Ferris wheel still under construction which much of the structure still clad in scaffolding. Others depict throngs of visitors individual exhibits and some Buildings just newly finished such as the U.S. Government Building featuring scaffolding off to the side for future installation to be completed. Arnold 1844-1927 was prior to the Fair an obscure Buffalo NY photographer who had been initially contracted to photograph the construction of the 1893 Worldâ€™s Fair but proved to be an excellent architectural photographer so so became the Chief of the Fairâ€™s Dept. of Photography. First edition of this massive compilation of addresses and reports presented at the Colombian Exposition. Of particular interest is the amount devoted to eastern religions including Hinduism Buddhism Bramo-Somaj Shintoism Confucianism Zoroastrianism as well as Islam. The editor has included papers on the role of Buddhism in Siam and Japan the development of Confucianism extracts from the Koran and more. Of particular interest are the papers presented by African-Americans on the â€œAmerican Negroeâ€™sâ€ role in Christianity including addresses by Bishop Arnett of the African Methodist Ethiopian Church as well as Fannie Barrier Williams on the â€œReligious Duty to the Negroâ€ and â€œThe Catholic Church and the Negro Raceâ€ by J.R. Slattery of Baltimore. Fannie Williams was a vociferous proponent of education for African-American women writing that in terms â€œof employment colored women bear a distressing burden of mean and unreasonable discrimination . . . colored women can find no employment in this free America.â€ As African-Americans were almost entirely excluded from the 1893 Columbian Exposition these papers and addresses offer just a few of the efforts by the Black community to engage with attendees. Conkey writes in the letter for the first volume to Charles Kurtz â€œI send you herewith a copy of the Catalogue which you may deem to file away as a reminder of many hours spent in order that others might see intelligently the grand work which you with others have done in the Art Department.â€ Walter Blakesley Conkey had founded the printing house in 1877 occupied many different job printers and in 1890 absorbed the Illinois Printing & Binding Co. and in Jan. 1893 signed the contracts awarding him exclusive rights for printing the myriad of catalogues and handbooks for the Columbian Exposition receiving a deposit of $ 10000. Two scarce original albumen stereoview photographs of livestock and horse tricks at the 1895 Cotton States & International Exposition which featured the resurgence of the â€œNew Southâ€ including the first pavilion sponsored for and by African-Americans the Atlanta Negro Building which covered 25000 square feet and was filled with exhibits of Black workers artists authors and introduced by a Jubilee Singers performances. Unfortunately their accomplishments were largely overshadowed by Booker T. Washingtonâ€™s notorious â€œAtlanta Compromiseâ€ speech which opened the Fair counseling African-Americans to seek economic security before political or social equality. Benjamin Kilburn 1827-1909. and his brother Edward b. 1830 initially operated their business together until Edward retired in the 1870â€™s and by 1872 they had a large photographic stereoview card factory one block from the Littleton trains station. Young salesmen carried the stereoviews on the trains and by the early 20th-Century the company was the most extensive producer of stereoview photographs purchasing images from such photographers as William H. 189536172Chicago: Adler Art Publishing Company 1895. Hardcover. Fair. Oblong folio. 193 pages. Brown cloth hardcover with gilt illustration on the front cover. Fair condition only. Spine missing and boards are held together by an old linen tape repair on the spine. Covers are scuffed partly affecting the gilt illustration on the front cover. The right front flyleaf front blank end sheet and title page are detached. Original end sheets are chipped around the edges. Some light soiling and stains to the front and back end sheets. Faint toning to the early pages in the text. Interior contents are mostly clean. Interior contents clean. Previous owner inscription on the front blank end sheet "Lou C. Wylie 570 Spring Street Atlanta Ga." Beneath that inscription is another "My Aunt by Marriage David Y Wylie." "Augusta Wylie King" written on the rear end sheet. The Wylie and King families were prominent citizens in Atlanta history. Scarce. Not in the Georgia Derenne catalog. 15 copies located in OCLC. From wikipedia: The Cotton States and International Exposition was a world's fair held in Atlanta Georgia United States in 1895.1 The exposition was designed "to foster trade between southern states and South American nations as well as to show the products and facilities of the region to the rest of the nation and Europe."1 The Cotton States and International Exposition featured exhibits from six states including various innovations in agriculture and technology and exhibits about women and African Americans.1 President Grover Cleveland presided over the opening of the exposition remotely by flipping an electric switch from his house in Massachusetts on September 18 1895.1 The event is best remembered for the "Atlanta Compromise" speech given by Booker T.
