Of particular interest is the amount devoted to eastern religions including Hinduism Buddhism Bramo-Somaj Shintoism Confucianism Zoroastrianism as well as Islam. The editor has included papers on the role of Buddhism in Siam and Japan the development of Confucianism extracts from the Koran and more. Of particular interest are the papers presented by African-Americans on the “American Negroe’s†role in Christianity including addresses by Bishop Arnett of the African Methodist Ethiopian Church as well as Fannie Barrier Williams on the “Religious Duty to the Negro†and “The Catholic Church and the Negro Race†by J.R. Slattery of Baltimore. Fannie Williams was a vociferous proponent of education for African-American women writing that in terms “of employment colored women bear a distressing burden of mean and unreasonable discrimination . . . colored women can find no employment in this free America.†As African-Americans were almost entirely excluded from the 1893 Columbian Exposition these papers and addresses offer just a few of the efforts by the Black community to engage with attendees. These two scarce souvenir albumen photograph capture World’s Columbian Exposition in 1893 with throngs of visitors strolling through the manicured grounds. Vernacular photography and personal cameras were strictly controlled at the 1893 White City with nearly all who had not paid the $ 2.00 camera fee forced to store them in lockers before entering the grounds. Arnold 1844-1927 was prior to the Fair an obscure Buffalo NY photographer who had shot the 1901 Pan-American Exposition and had been initially contracted to photograph the construction of the 1893 World’s Fair but proved to be such an excellent architectural photographer he became the Chief of the Fair’s Dept. of Photography. Two scarce original albumen stereoview photographs of livestock and horse tricks at the 1895 Cotton States & International Exposition which featured the resurgence of the “New South†including the first pavilion sponsored for and by African-Americans the Atlanta Negro Building which covered 25000 square feet and was filled with exhibits of Black workers artists authors and introduced by a Jubilee Singers performances. Unfortunately their accomplishments were largely overshadowed by Booker T. Washington’s notorious “Atlanta Compromise†speech which opened the Fair counseling African-Americans to seek economic security before political or social equality. Benjamin Kilburn 1827-1909. and his brother Edward b. 1830 initially operated their business together until Edward retired in the 1870’s and by 1872 they had a large photographic stereoview card factory one block from the Littleton trains station. Young salesmen carried the stereoviews on the trains and by the early 20th-Century the company was the most extensive producer of stereoview photographs purchasing images from such photographers as William H. Wylie 570 Spring Street Atlanta Ga." Beneath that inscription is another "My Aunt by Marriage David Y Wylie." "Augusta Wylie King" written on the rear end sheet. From wikipedia: The Cotton States and International Exposition was a world's fair held in Atlanta Georgia United States in 1895.1 The exposition was designed "to foster trade between southern states and South American nations as well as to show the products and facilities of the region to the rest of the nation and Europe."1 The Cotton States and International Exposition featured exhibits from six states including various innovations in agriculture and technology and exhibits about women and African Americans.1 President Grover Cleveland presided over the opening of the exposition remotely by flipping an electric switch from his house in Massachusetts on September 18 1895.1 The event is best remembered for the "Atlanta Compromise" speech given by Booker T. In holograph on the lower margin is " At Brennan & Davis' Monday & Tuesday Apr 20th & 21st." Faint foxing which is less pronounced than in the scan; else very good. The firm of Radtke Lauckner & Co. were publishers and importers of etchings engravings and photographs located at 6 East 18th Street New York during the 1890's. Apparently they arranged traveling exhibitions of their wares at various locations; this elaborate invitation was for a showing at Brennan & Davis' a jewelry stationery and book store in Bradford Pennsylvania. Alphonse Davanne is a most important figure in the early history of photography. Born 1824 in Paris he was a founding member of the Société Française de Photographie the first photographic society in the world and subsequently its vice president and then president. His early collaborations were involved with photolithography and by 1854 he had mastered that process. His next experiments were on developing a direct positive process. Davanne served as the president of the jury for the photographic section of this International Exhibition.<br /> <br /> Largely concerned with the history cameras and equipment and the latest advances in photomechanical processes etc. <br /> <br /> Roosens and Salu No. 3697. 18513220148<p><em>Lithograph strip panorama consisting of four sheets conjoined measuring 12 x 230 cm overall some light dust-soiling in places; folding into publisher's original boards the upper cover with an illustration of a showman in military attire drumming up an audience for a show consisting of a Punch and Judy-style booth with what appear curiously to be marionettes rather than glove-puppets dancing on the stage spine expertly repaired covers slightly marked but nevertheless still a good example.</em></p><p>Rare panorama consisting of 75 captioned vignettes of the people of many nationalities idly wasting time or misbehaving themselves in mostly harmless ways: "A Highland Gentleman practising the Art of Boozing" "John Bull sleeping on the National Debt" "A Hindoo Gentleman enjoying Hookah" "Young Irish Lady doing penance by walking on sharp stones round a well" "A New Zealand Chief polishing the skull of one of his enemies" and so on. It concludes with 'A French Patriot playing Battledoor i.e. battledore & Shuttlecock' the character hitting two crowns and a bonnet-rouge into the air.</p><p>Although unsigned the artist for the work is clearly Benjamin Clayton 1809-1883 what little we know of him comes mainly from his daughter the writer and artist Ellen Creathorne 1834-1900. Benjamin was born in Dublin but moved his family to London in 1841 hoping to be a history painter however his gifts lay instead with illustration firstly producing his own periodicals gChatg and gPunchinello. A journal of wit wisdom and romanceg but later having to work for other publishers first with Ackermann & Co. and later for Dean and Son.</p><p>The publisher George Mann at 39 Cornhill together with Dean & Son issued several panoramas at the time of the Great Exhibition the partnership ending with Mann's death in 1852.</p> Dean & Son, Printers. An unusually scarce original albumen stereoview photograph capturing the prize-winning stand of decorative art glass offered by the famed Victorian china and glass manufacturer’s W.P. & G. Phillips located on Oxford Street & New Bond Street. They catered to a well-to-do class of clients and their displays offered intricate and beautifully made designs. The Great London Exhibition of 1862 emulated the original 1851 Crystal Palace Great Exhibition featured over 28000 participating vendors and set on the present site of the Natural History Museum and Science Museum in London’s South Kensington. Woodward 1836-1894 first established himself as a photography dealer and decorative arts and glass dealer in Orange MA before locating his firm in Rochester in 1862 where continued operating under his own imprint before becoming director of the Union View Co. in 1882 producing landscapes and architectural views. Especially valuable for its coverage of early railway technology an area in which the author was himself expert as he had served as a Consulting Engineer for the Great North of Scotland Railway as early as 1853. The book's four divisions - Railways; Textile Machinery; Metal and Wood Manufacturing Machinery; and "Machinery in General" are each profusely illustrated with both text figures and folding plates.
