Exterior views the Midway the Ferris Wheel interiors of all the exhibits sporting events and more. The Louisiana Purchase Exposition spread over 1200 acres and incorporated education into all aspects of the exhibitors including blacksmiths at work Native Americans living in their villages transplanted Philippine Moro natives elephant trainers lion tamers and more. Visitors to The Pike -- the mile long midway -- could scale the Tyrolean Alps visit Blarney Castle a Parisian fashion show dive under the sea or ride a burro to Cliff Dwellings. The 1904 St. Louis Fair also featured the first Airship races contest which offered a prize if the competing airships could complete the course three times at a speed of 15 m.p.h. A photo of Hippolyte Francis’s airship Ville de St. Mande depicts the airship in flight with a 100 foot long gasbag and 35 feet in diameter. Billed as the first World’s Fair in the Southwest the Cavalcade of Texas and The Hall of Negro Life proved to be two of the most popular attractions. The unofficial Fort Worth Texas Centennial was a competing attraction produced by Billy Rose with nearly 1 million attendees while the Dallas Texas Centennial achieved nearly 6.4 million visitors. A very scarce original albumen stereoview of the 1898 World’s Fair which like the 1894 California Midwinter Fair was inspired by the 1893 Columbian Exposition and spread across 184 acres at the northern edge of Omaha near the Missouri River. The Grand Court known as “The New White City†consisted of majestic temporary structures and statuary largely covered in plaster along with lush gardens and a canal with fountains and gondolas in contrast to Omaha which was still a fairly small frontier city. Hull 1880-1949 was an 18-year-old Kansas photographer who subsequently moved with his mother Sarah Adeline Hull 1843-1932 to Medford Oregon where he established himself as a scenic photographer & printer for over 20 years before moving to Chico CA. The text is printed with English on the upper half of the page and Spanish below. Illustrated with scenes of the fabulous buildings on the grounds and obviously sponsored by "Knox the Hatter" with ads for the haberdasher throughout on the covers and at each end of the main text. A slightly sad copy and obviously used at the event. Still a rare and interesting survivor. unknown

Occasional faint foxing to plate margins; small puncture at center of one tissue-guard else a tight Near Fine copy in an attractive Stikeman binding slightly rubbed at joints and spine ends. Introduction signed by J. Taylor Ellyson; main text unattributed. This copy with the engraved bookplate of noted Virginia bibliophile John W. Hancock Sr.; laid in are 1 a 1925 note from Stikeman to Hancock noting that the book is ready to be shipped; 2 the original mailing label from Goodspeed's where the book was originally purchased; and 3 TNS from Hancock to Thomas F. Ryan dated October 26 1925 transmitting details regarding this copy. <br /> <br /> Attractive copy of this lavishly-produced volume published by Ryan ".for private circulation among his friends who may not have the privilege of seeing the originals.which he preserved as a reminder of one of the most historic of Expositions ever held in America." Doubtless Ryan was concerned as to how one of these freely distributed copies might have entered the trade in 1925 prompting the query to which Hancock's letter preserved here was in answer. Visitors sailed on four different American Line twin-screw steamships including the SS New York SS Paris SS St. Paul and SS St. Louis. Featuring 3722 exhibitors from Sweden Finland Norway Denmark and Russia the exhibition was held on the island of Djurgarden and many of the structures still exist including the Djurgardsbron bridge Skansens Bergbana funicular railway now in the Skansen open-air museum and zoo and the Nordic Museum. Sadly Ferdinand Boberg’s famed 16820 square meter exposition hall with cupola and 4 minarets was demolished after the Exposition. No copies in Worldcat.
