Simple Half-Title Followed By Table Of Contents In Each Volume 53 Plates In First Volume And 67 Plates In The Second Volume; Originally Issued In 24 Parts 1833-1834 With 120 Plates In Total Then This First Hardcover Issue Undated But 1835 With All Plates Bound In Two Volumes. Later The Complete Set Of 123 Plates With 3 Vignettes Was Published In 3 Volumes And Still Later It Was Enlarged To 126 And Then 130 Illustrations And Incorporated Into Sets With Explanatory Text Included. Slight Wear At Lower Edges And Corners And Fresh But Volume I Has A1/2" X 1/2" Chip At Upper Right Corner Of Spine And Volume Ii Has A 1" X 3/4" Chip Which Is Detached And Laid In Loosely. No Marks But Gift Card Of Mrs. Hosmer A. Johnson Dated In 1899 To Her Granddaughter. Hosmer Allen Johnson M.D. L.L.D. 1822 - 1891 Was An American Physician Academic And Mason From New York. After Graduating From The University Of Michigan He Moved To Chicago Illinois To Attend Rush Medical College. There He Became An Understudy Of William B. Herrick And Joined His Medical Practice. Receiving A Doctor Of Medicine In 1852 Johnson Was Named Lecturer On Physiology At Rush Eventually Chairing A Department There. In 1859 He Co-Founded The Chicago Medical College At Lind University Which Later Became The Feinberg School Of Medicine Of Northwestern University. During The Civil War Johnson Was The Top Medical Aide In The State Presiding Over The Board Of Medical Examiners For The State Of Illinois. Hosmer Johnson Was Initiated Into The Masonic Order In 1853 And Rose To Become Grand Orator Of The Grand Lodge Of Illinois. He Organized A Knights Templar Chapter For Illinois And Was First Officer Of That Branch For Two Terms. He Became A Member Of The Supreme Council Of The Scottish Rite Northern Jurisdiction In 1861 Later Becoming And Officer. He Could Speak Seven Foreign Languages Fluently And Also Had A Strong Knowledge Of The Ojibwe Language. Softcover reddish orange wrappers printed in black & white with a full page caricature by Yvette Guilbert on the back cover. The soiled and heavily chipped covers are detached. There are several tears and small pieces out from the edges of the covers. Several tears to the bottom edge of the front cover have been reinforced with archival linen tape from the verso. 20 pages including the covers with textual and full-page illustrations by the French caricaturists of the period including contributions by Antoni Deupe Gosse Andres Jimmy Oawks Enri Schmied Antek Pogolotti Sagette Yvette Guilbert. The text includes a poem by Jacques Moulin "Dedie a Henri Willemin" the satirical "Petit cours de Medecine pratique" by Le Bon Docteur "Petites explications pour ceux qui n'auraient par compris les evenements" by Jimmy Oawks and numerous biting captions serving as titles to the illustrations. The pages are darkened with short tears and chips to the edges. A complete but fragile issue well worth restoring due to its rarity. <p>Biting political satire about the Stavisky Affair distributed by the left wing Association des Ecrivains et des Artistes Revolutionaires.<p>Founded in March 1932 the Association was a section of the International Union of Revolutionary Writers which the Comintern had founded a couple of years earlier. The AEAR was a French association founded by communist and communist sympathizing writers in opposition to war and fascism. Henri Cartier Bresson Luis Bunuel Max Ernst Andre Gide and Man Ray were for a time among the notable members of the association.<p>A 1934 financial scandal The Stavisky Affair was generated by the actions and dealings of the embezzler Alexandre Stavisky 1888-1934. Politicians and investors were swept up in Stavisky's schemes. He sold hundreds of millions of francs worth of false bonds on the city of Bayonne's municipal pawnshops. First charged with fraud in 1927 his trial was postponed over and over again as Stavinsky known as "Le Beau Sasha" was granted bail 19 times. In the interim one judge was found decapitated and the affair culminated with Stavisky's "suicide" though speculation persisted that the police killed him. As suggested by "Le Canard enchaine" if it was indeed suicide Stavisky must have had "a long arm". Right wing accusations that the police had killed Stavisky to protect influential people led to the resignation of French premier Camille Chautemps. His successor Daladier from the Radical-Socialist Party immediately fired the right-wing Paris Police prefect Jean Chiappe as well as the director of the Comedie Francaise. The new Interior minister Eugene Frot announced that demonstrators would be shot. The events led to an attempted right-wing putsch fomented by Action Francaise the Croix-de-Feu the Mouvement Franciste and a collection of anti-Semitic monarchist and fascist groups. The riots resulted in 14 deaths at the hands of the police. Daladier was himself forced to resign and his successor the conservative Gaston Doumergue formed a coalition cabinet. The affair inspired the 1937 Hollywood movie "Stolen Holiday" starring Claude Rains and the later 1974 Alain Resnais film "Stavisky" starring Jean-Paul Belmondo.<p>RARE. Also included is a 10 page handmade card from an acquaintance. Some pinholes to upper edge of sketches few light marginal smudges or stains. Generally very good. <br /> <br /> Small archive of materials from the influential Seattle artist Ray Jensen 1929-2019. Jensen was most well-known for his sculptures and mixed-media assemblages which often explored themes of death and decay. He was also an art educator at Bellevue Community College and the Cornish College of the Arts. Jensen's work can be found in both public institutions and private collections including The Waiting Multitude at the University of Washington's Suzzallo Library; The Dance at Seattle's McCaw Hall; The Doorway at Bellevue Community College; The Pursuit of Knowledge a life-size bronze of leaping figures at the Rainier Branch of Seattle Public Library; and The Graduates at Bellevue High School. <br /> <br /> <br /> The journal from Gloria Jensen with whom Ray was married for 61 years from 1958 covers family activities including trips to Ashland and Hawaii and her feelings about Ray with dates ranging from 1977-1989. An early work in the career of all three artists: Erdmann 1931 -2012 received his BFA in sculpture from University of Wisconsin in 1969; Jankowski 1939 - 2020 also graduated from Wisconsin and taught art and sculpture at Monmouth University in New Jersey.
