1960List3336Nebraska and Minnesota: multiple publishers 1960. Ten posters mainly measuring approximately 14 x 21 ½ inches with some smaller. Many with slight damage and wear to edges all having been stored in tubes; bright and attractive; overall very good to excellent. Territory bands were dance bands that toured around particular regions of the US. Usually swing or big band jazz groups they mostly covered popular songs playing in smaller cities and towns that nationally touring groups would skip. Offered here is a collection of ten posters for territory bands from Nebraska dating from about the 1930s or 1940s to the 1960s. Unusually for territory bands these groups are mainly composed of white musicians and represent genres including rock ‘n’ roll and polka the latter of which was popular in Nebraska due to the state’s concentration of Czech and German immigrants.

Bands in the collection include International Polka Association Hall of Fame inductee Ernie Kucera whose orchestra played from 1942 to 1995; fellow Czech polka player Adolph Urbanovsky’s Bohemian Orchestra; Don Shaw’s “Top 40†Dance Band and Entertainers which covered top 40 tracks in the 1950s; Little Joe and the Ramrods an early 1960s rock ‘n’ roll group; and the Lee Barron Orchestra. Information about many of the bands represented can be found in Barron’s 1987 book Odyssey of the Mid-Nite Flyer. multiple publishers unknown

1932List3665Chicago Illinois: Egyptian Press 1932. Folio 5 pp. Wraps torn at seam slightly musty odor good condition. An unrecorded composition by a woman who travelled through the midwest claiming to be a descendant of Cleopatra using the name Princess Dalla Pattra. The details of the princess are murky as she disappears from newspaper records after 1930 when she admitted in court to using a manager to stage a publicity stunt in St. Louis.1 In her hearing she also admitted that she had been arrested for embezzlement in San Francisco in 1920. Two years later rather inexplicably this songsheet was published in collaboration with a Max Lander who according to patent records was English.

The introduction to the song reads: “Hear the desert winds shriek and the tom-toms in the distance thrilling with the weird undertone of the desert night then the calm as the Royal Egyptian Maiden sings her love song to her desert prince.†We find no record of the composition in OCLC or anywhere else or of the princess in newspapers after her 1930 court appearance with the only findable record of her continued impersonation a patent registered in 19312 and this song sheet.

1 “St. Louis Wonders if it Got a Fooling†Kirksville Daily Express and Kirksville Daily News April 6 1930.
2 “Only to be with you just for a day†Catalog of Copyright Entries Part 3: Musical Compositions Library of Congress Copyright Office 1932 22760 accessed at https://archive.org/details/bub_gb_ZS5jAAAAIAAJ/page/1165/. 51-1412Paris: Chez Briasson David & Le Breton 1762-1767. 39.5 x 25.5 cm. 13 plates some double and triple page numbered I-XIII and one sheet of letterpress description. On the high-warp loom the warps run vertically between two rollers with the bottom one receiving the finished tapestry. For use on these looms the cartoon would be hung on a wall behind the weaver who would look through the warp threads at the cartoon’s reflection in a mirror on the wall in front of him.In contrast on the low-warp loom the warps run horizontally between two rollers. For use on these looms cartoons were cut into strips of about 80 centimeters wide and laid below the tautly stretched warp threads. The weaver would look down between the warp threads to transfer the design. After the design from each cartoon strip was woven the strip was removed and the completed section of tapestry was rolled onto a receiving beam. The next strip was then laid under the still-unwoven warp threads and the process was repeated until the entire cartoon had been transferred.
