The spines are darkened with a bit of wear to the extremities.<br /> <br /> A tour-de-force of 18th century book design Pine's Horace is entirely engraved both text and illustration and liberally supplied with initials head- and tailpieces and vignettes exhibiting a harmony and delicacy reminiscent of the best French printing of the period. OCLC 504455151 ESTC t126448 This book lacks most of the leather backstrip and the entire rear board; the front calf covered board is present but detached. The ffep and title page are still attached to the front board; the rest of the text block are held firmly by the original stitching and remainder of the spine. Text is clean but for a couple brief pencil notes marking where the reader left off. Quite a scarce volume; a good cadidate for rebinding. "Most of the pieces in this entertaining miscellany originally appeared in Lloyd's Evening Post." These anonymously published essays skip from a reminiscence of the author's charming youthful infatuation with his nurse and a string of other women into adulthood to a day at an auction house to his arrival at Bath and an odd "exchange" of verses with one "Jack Meggot." A few years later "Honest Ranger" published a second book A Visit to the Ideal World 1763. This author who published under the psedonym "Honest Ranger" has variously been identified as Arthur Murphy or John Ingledew but is to be distinguished from the "Honest Ranger" who published the infamous Harris’s List of the ladies of Covent Garden. . He studied under Colson painter of the Academy of Saint Luc and devoted himself first to the art of wood-engraving; he afterwards as an engraver on steel rendered himself famous in all countries. In some of his works he seeks to prove that Gutenberg is not the inventor of printing and maintains that long before Gutenberg engraving on wood had been employed for printing images and inscriptions; that during his residence in Strasburg Gutenberg attempted the application of this art to the printing of books and that on his return to Mayence he first printed the Donatus and the Catholicon of Johannes de Janua with engraved and solid blocks. These two works provided further discussion of the origins of woodcut prints including a passage refuting popular belief about the origin wood engraving and some ideas for further study. <BR> <br /> <BR> <br /> Fournier 1712--1768 was born in Paris and trained as a wood engraver and type founder being a member of the 18th century dynasty of the well-known Fournier family. He later turned to steel engraving. He published a table of the proportions of the different printing characters whose purpose was to propose for all typefaces a fixed measurement in "typographic points" and a systematic gradation. He worked closely with the collaborators of the Encyclopédie providing the printer Le Breton with all the documentation relating to the typographic foundry and plans for his own instruments as well as providing Diderot with his collection of ancient alphabets. Finally after multiple disputes with his Parisian colleagues he became infamous for the printing of his famous Manuel Typographique 1764 1766 just prior to his death. J. Barbou unknown

He seems to have specialised in sermons on public occasions; in 1784 he preached at the execution for burglary of one John Dixon.<br />This sermon reflects a key moment in the politics of the young Republic and the special political character of Massachusetts. George Washington who was in the middle of his final term as President was attempting to hold the balance between two political forces the Federalists who had created the Union and the Democratic- Republicans led by Thomas Jefferson who stressed states' rights and libertarian principles. Behind the disputes about domestic issues lay important philosophical disagreements. The Federalists were distinctly lukewarm about the French Revolution and the whole idea of democracy; their opponents accused them of being aristocratic and royalist in their aspirations. In foreign policy this led the Federalists to sympathise with England against France while the Democratic- Republicans held the reverse view. Washington while officially non-partisan was psychologically drawn to the Federalist position and went over openly to them after his Presidency ended. This led to bitter criticism of him by Jefferson and his party.<br />Massachusetts was the strongest centre of Federalism indeed the Party survived there long after it had collapsed in the rest of the country. The Governor Samuel Adams a cousin of the 2nd President John Adams was a Federalist. His career illustrates that revolutionary fervour against English rule was not necessarily associated with social radicalism. He was one of the earliest separatists and drafted the Massachusetts constitution and the Bill of Rights. He was an organiser of the Boston Tea Party.<br />Fobes' sermon takes as its text 2nd. Peter 11 10 & 12 'They despise government - are not afraid to speak evil of dignataries - and things they understand not'. He strongly criticises those who 'speak evil' of governors an obvious reference to the Democratic- Republicans and the idea that government can be carried on if not based on the Christian religion - a specific attack on French influences Deism and Tom Paine. However he qualifies this by referring to the light of liberty kindled in America now shining in France and by claiming that Republicanism is the form of government enjoined by the Bible.<br />This is an interesting aspect of the Sermon. There are any number of sermons which proclaim that Monarchy is the Divinely instituted form of government but few which claim this for Republicanism. In France the Republican ideal was associated with the rejection of Christian doctrines and in Ireland the division within the camp of democracy was between those inspired by French ideas and the upholders of legislative independence under the English crown.<br />In Ireland the American and French Revolutions had very different effects - the triumph of the Volunteers in 1782 and the defeat of the United Irishmen in 1798. This sermon with its innate conservatism helps to cast useful light on the ideological gulf which separated these revolutions which in historical writing have been closely associated.</p> Printed at the Mercury Press by Young & Minns hardcover
