Leeds Castle was the country seat of Charles Wykeham Martin (1801-1870), an English Conservative Party politician who sat in the House of Commons in three periods between 1841 and 1870. Cruttenden had exhibited two of his images of Leeds Castle at the Photographic Society's 1861 Exhibition. Gernsheim, 458.

Oblong 4to., First Edition, with title in red and black, and 26 fine plates on blue stock with accompanying letterpress; original full brown leather, boards elaborately framed in blind enclosing title in gilt, back with raised bands, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers, a remarkably bright, crisp, clean copy. Sold from a local institution with two neat stamps on blank preliminary only. Valuable and very scarce record of many of the ancient buildings cleared to to make way for late nineteenth-century redevelopment. EXTREMELY SCARCE, ESPECIALLY IN THIS CONDITION. Anderson, p.60; Bartholomew (Clark Bequest) p.203 (giving the author as 'Redfern').

Due volumi in 4° legati in mezza pelle con unghie, titoli al dorso incisi in oro, sguardie marmorizzate, bianche, occhiello, frontespizio, dedicatoria, 468 pp. al primo volume, LXXVI tavole al secondo. Splendida opera dell' ing. Baggi trattante i problemi e le soluzioni alla costruzione di grandi opere viarie, galleristiche, di canalizzazione, etc. Con prosa piana e chiara supportata da calcoli seguiti passo per passo, l' autore si muove a suo agio in complessi problemi topografici accompagnando il lettore in una non facile materia. Ammirevole il secondo volume formato da grandi tavole a doppia pagina, alcune al tratto altre in più colori, necessario complemento al testo del primo volume. Opera non comune ed in ottimo stato tranne per i dorsi parzialmente staccati. Molto importante per gli argomenti trattati e rara a trovarsi completa delle tavole.

Provides 'reliable information on the campaign which preceded Culloden in 1746 by the commander of a volunteer regiment of cavalry' (Pargellis & Medley). This copy was formerly in the library of William Lumsden Walker (1919-2005), formerly Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist, Royal Hospital for Sick Children and Southmead Hospital, Bristol, and bears his signature on front free endpaper.
