This copy was formerly in the possession of Charles Arrowsmith and bears his signed holograph inscription on front paste-down 'qualified as a Governor & Director of the Poor of the Parish of Saint Pancras. Dec. 4 1832.'The statute referred to is 59 Geo. III. Cap. xxxix. It is of unusual length (176pp inc. index) and complexity for an Act of this nature and includes a detailed and comprehensive index. Extremely scarce, especially in this condition.

Very Good French Original wrappers. Cr. 8vo. (17 x 13 cm). In French. [xii], 150 p. Slight foxing and fading on cover and several ink notes by pen, but, overall a very good copy. First and only French edition of this scarce book on social topography of Beyoglu (Pera) in the 19th century, written by Said Naum Duhani who was a Christian Arab and the son of Naum Pasha (1850-1911), an Ottoman statesman in Syrian Arab origin, the governor of Cebel-i Lübnan Mutasarrifate, ambassador of Paris. "This is an invaluable source on Levantine, Greek, Armenian and Jewish people and their buildings at two main streets of 'Francophone Beyoglu'" (Çeliksoy).

Wymer's delightful sequence, covering virtually the whole of England, is neither a gazetteer nor the usual rural eulogy. Rather, he sets out to compare and contrast traditional variations between one county and another, emphasising industries, customs, superstitions, legends, folklore and, above all, people. It is an unusual approach, based on a charming prose style and enhanced by evocative illustrations both photographic and line. A lovely set, and uncommon in this condition

This copy was formerly in the McIntosh Library, Dunkeld, and carries the MS press-mark A8.51 and bookplate (numbered 493) on front paste-down.
