Publisher's full brown cloth gilt lettering on spine blind-stamped borders and decoration on cover t.e.g. Illustrated with tissue-protected engraved frontispiece portrait of the author and 58 woodcuts in text. This is a later American printing based on the third London edition and includes a Memoir of the Author by Louis Agassiz. Hugh Miller 1802 1856 was a self-taught Scottish geologist and writer folklorist and an evangelical Christian. Considered to be one of Scotland's greatest paleontologists he made a number of important fossil discoveries though his fervent religious beliefs led him to strongly oppose the then-emerging theory of evolution. For most of 1856 Miller suffered severe headaches and mental distress and the most probable diagnosis is of psychotic depression. He feared that he might harm his wife or children because of persecutory delusions. Miller committed suicide shooting himself in the chest with a revolver in his house on Tower Street Portobello on the night of 23/24 December 1856. That night he had finished checking printers' proofs for his book on geology and Christianity "The Testimony of the Rocks." Before his death he wrote a poem called "Strange but True." He died on 24 December 1856. Former owner's elegant hand-writted signature and date 1874 on fep taped over a previous embossed bookplate. This is the First American Edition which is "much revised" from the London edition of 1875. This book is in Very Good- condition and is lacking a dust jacket. The spine ends and corners have bumping rubbing and edge wear. There is fraying to the spine ends. There is a slight slant to the spine of the book. The text pages are generally clean and bright though there are a couple spots of foxing throughout. "In 1877 Miller adapted his First Fam'lies of the Sierras into a play The Danites or the Heart of the Sierras. It opened on August 22 in New York with McKee Rankin as the main character. The anti-Mormon play which featured Danites hunting the daughter of one of the murderers of Joseph Smith became one of the most commercially successful in a series of anti-Mormon dramas at the time. The Spirit of the Times however attributed its success to curious audience members expecting a disastrous failure and instead discovering a good show: "The play proved to possess more than ordinary merit and if it is not a great work it is decidedly not a very bad one." The Danites was extended from a run of only a few days to one of seven straight weeks before moving to another theatre and ultimately was performed to such a degree that it rivaled the popularity of Uncle Tom's Cabin. His picaresque life in the California Gold Rush served as the basis for his sobriquet aas "the Poet of the Sierras." This is a Very Good Plus copy of the First Edition edited by A.V.D. Honeyman. Her biography of Harriet Martineau 1802-1876 who has been called "the first modern sociologist" is a sympathetic one. Martineau was very prominent in the intellectual circles of her day writing on history political economy and children's literature.This is a Near Fine copy of the Third Edition designated as part of the "Eminent Women Series. Edited by John H. Ingram." Ingram was a prominent editor and biographer an advocate for the literary reputation of Edgar Poe.There is no publication date but the First Edition was 1884 and the Second in 1889. Therefore Quercus assigns a publication date of 1890 as probable. Green cloth binding with titling on the front cover and spine in gilt. Clean text; x 224 pages.
