A prolific writer of both epic and lyrical verse he ranks him amongst the other European literary greats including Dante Shakespeare or Milton. Despite his fame surprisingly little can be confirmed about his life resulting in "successive biographers have woven the few concrete facts known about Camões's life into a bewildering complexity of fantasy and theory that is unsupported by concrete documentary evidence" Britanica. While some of his poetry was lost during his lifetime Os Lusíadas The Lusiads remains a classic. William Rickarby Miller 1818-1893 was born in England and emigrated to America in 1844 making his home in New York City. He was noted for his landscape paintings and watercolors as well as his illustrations for books and periodicals. He was mostly occupied during the last twenty years of his life in the execution of pen and ink sketches for his project "1000 Gems of American Landscape." Provenance: Private English Collection. 18700008029Fort Edward New York. Fair. 1870. On offer is an absolutely fascinating scrapbook that belonged to Jahu DeWitt Miller. Dated 1876 it was put together when Miller was 19 and working as a lecturer and teacher at the Fort Edward Institute in upstate New York. The book measures 7 inches by 5 and 3/4 inches. The binding on the book is broken and the pages are loose. However they are intact and contain a veritable goldmine of notes jotting etc. There are an estimated 100 pages and of these and estimated 80% are complete. Miller began his studies at age 14 at the Fort Edward Institute - a collegiate or seminary as they were known in those days. After graduating he began to teach there. He also acted as Librarian for the Seminary and was on record as a voracious reader. At the same time he began to preach at various Methodist churches in the area. He was attracted to journalism and wrote extensively. He also began a book collection that grew to a very significant size. He lectured widely across the United States for many years. In 1901 he donated his extensive rare book collection to National Park Seminary located at the time on the edge of Washington DC. Over the years NPS has changed hands several times until 1942 when it was expropriated by the US Army as a convalescent home for wounded soldiers. Today it is part of the Walter Reed Medical Center complex. Miller died of a heart attack in Boise ID in 1911. The scrapbook is chock full of notes letter cards and jottings. On many the ink has faded. Notes are stuck in willy-nilly: "Artman looks as tho he were an old bummer See his nose" ". Miller - Butler has prepared an article which she intends to deliver this morning the same going very strongly against you." On May 6th 1873 he published a printed statement of defense challenging unnamed critics of statement and articles he has written. On Institute letterhead he has received a letter addressed to himself requesting a loan of $300 from a MF Chichester. On Dec 6th 1872 he received a letter from the Office of the College Courant: "Dear Doctor - I draw to you this line as a matter of friendship. Chatfield is just on the point of failure and will probably make an assignment next week. Concerning that you have a claim against him the sooner you get it into the lawyers hands the better. I send you the name of a good one EP Arvine Church Street opposite Post Office. The sheriff is dropping in every day making attachments which are being for. The future of the Courant is doubtful; but it will probably not die. Prof Barker of Yale talks of taking it in which case I shall probably retain my connection with it. Another though just occurred to me that perhaps you could get the account of your bill more readily by ordering some of Chatfields publications Sincerely Yours RW Keufshall. There are cards referring to The Senate Society possibly one of the many debating societies extant that to which he belonged. And so the scrapbook goes. It is a veritable goldmine for a historian or researcher exploring the life and experiences of this noted American literary figure. Dadley.Costume of the Russian Empire was one of a series of six costume books published by William Miller over a four-year period. The plates for this edition were copied from a series of engravings begun at Petersburg in 1776 and finished in 1779 under the care and at the expense of C.W. Müller for J.G. Georgi's work Beschreibung ""at the request of the late empress."" Text in English and French with a separate title-page in each language. The popularity of Miller's books created a demand for successive re-publications though the title-page of this copy states 1803 the year of the first edition this is actually a re-issue with the French title page dated 1811 and watermarks dated 1811 text and 1817 plates. Faint foxing to half title otherwise AN IMMACULATE COPY the binding gleaming and the text untouched.<br/> <br/> Handsomely printed and illustrated this libertine tale of seduction and deception in Louis XV's France was lavishly bound in the Rococo style by the master Flety describes as "the apostle of emblematic bookbinding." Legendary among French binders of the late 19th and early 20th centuries for his energy and imagination Charles Meunier 1865-1940 was apprenticed to Gustave Bénard at the age of 11 worked for a time in the atelier of Marius Michel and then set up his own studio when he was 20. According to Duncan & De Bartha he drew "on both traditional and modern techniques and forms of decoration mixing classical punches . . . with newly fashionable incised and modelled leather panels." He was especially adept at creating bindings that were not merely apt for the contents of the book but that embodied in their design the themes of the work. His Rococo pattern here is extravagant even for that over-the-top style the decoration as unrestrained as the amoral aristocrats whose exploits Denon exposes here. First printed anonymously in 1777 "No Tomorrow" is narrated by a callow youth who falls under the spell of Madame de T a brilliant manipulator who uses his infatuation with her to draw her husband's attention away from her long-term affair with a marquis. Her plan is so successful that she succeeds in enjoying a dalliance with our narrator convinces both her husband and her lover that she is faithful to them and keeps all three men on good terms with each other. At the end of his adventure our hero searches for a moral to the story but finds none. Like the anti-heroine of his work our author diplomat courtier and polymath Dominique Vivant Baron Denon 1747-1825 had the wit and the talent to thrive during a tumultuous period in France managing to stay in the good graces successively of Louis XV Louis XVI Robespierre and Napoleon. He had met the last of these rulers at the salon of future empress Josephine de Beauharnais and was invited by Napoleon to join the Egypt expeditionary force as an arts and culture observer. Earning the moniker "Napoleon's Eye" he made sketches of the remarkable monuments--sometimes while under enemy fire--as well as of the ports the cities the inhabitants and the art particularly ancient hieroglyphics. When the illustrated account of his journey was published Russell tells us that Denon became "the first to present to Europe a true and honest image of ancient Egypt" after being "the first European traveller to spend months exploring the desert and recording the monuments he found there." He was "the primary force behind revealing Egypt's civilisation to an astonished Europe." The graceful etchings in the present volume are by the celebrated illustrator Paul Avril 1849-1928 who studied art in various Paris salons including the École des Beaux Arts. According to Ray Avril "was a witty and ingenious artist" and a prolific one as well illustrating a number of bibliophile's editions as well as classics of erotica. His illustrations here bring to mind work of the Rococo artists Watteau Boucher and Fragonard. Our edition benefits from the addition of a second work containing notes on the life of the author by prominent man of letters Anatole France 1844-1924 who would win the 1921 Nobel Prize for literature "in recognition of his brilliant literary achievements characterized as they are by a nobility of style a profound human sympathy grace and a true Gallic temperament." Spine a little darkened faint browning at edges of leaves as no doubt in all copies because of paper stock chosen but A FINE COPY--clean and fresh internally in a lustrous binding with few signs of wear.<br/> <br/> Beautifully bound and with delicate vignettes that mingle with the text this "histoirette bourgeoise" is the story of an adulterous love affair told in verse. When Denise's husband scorns his wife for another woman she follows suit and takes up a romance of her own. Told from the point of view of Denise's lover the poem relates how his initial feelings of admiration and desire turn into passion obsession and ultimately disappointment when Denise decides to return to her husband. Her final message to the narrator hints at the possibility of an "enfant de l'adultaire" saying that if she goes back to her spouse any child produced by their illicit union would at least have a proper place in a respected household. The etchings appearing here in two states are based on watercolors by Swiss artist Eugene Grivaz 1852-1915 whose light airy style adds a fine sense of romanticism to this work. Legendary among French binders of the late 19th and early 20th centuries for his energy and imagination Charles Meunier 1865-1940 was apprenticed to Gustave Bénard at the age of 11 worked for a time in the atelier of Marius Michel and then set up his own studio when he was 20. According to Duncan & De Bartha he drew "on both traditional and modern techniques and forms of decoration mixing classical punches . . . with newly fashionable incised and modelled leather panels." This eclectic approach did not lead to the kind of popularity enjoyed by some of our binder's most distinguished competitors and partly as a protest in recognition of this "Meunier declined to participate in the 1900 Exposition as he felt that the Grand Prix would automatically be awarded to Marius Michel which it was. He staged his own show at his studio on the Boulevard Malesherbes and received as much magazine coverage as the participants at the Exposition." Our author Aurelien Scholl 1833-1902 was a journalist and writer who never backed down from a duel. The New York Times called him "a typical French militant journalist. His love of dignity and scrupulosity regarding the most insignificant points of honor caused him to reach a point where he could wield the sword or pen with equal facility." Scholl was particularly well known for the combative articles he contributed to such papers as Le Figaro and L'Éclair but as a novelist poet and dramatist he preferred to focus on Parisian bourgeois life love and scandals. In a folding fabrikoid box. Miller was born in 1851 attended Cornell and went to Kansas in 1878. This colorful narrative of his life as a rancher there over the next five years is an excellent firsthand account of ranching in Indian Territory during that early period. Miller spent a year and a half in Alaska in 1898-99 and died in Binghamton in 1930. Miller's book was the first to include a photograph of its author; the portrait shows the bearded and extremely hirsute Miller seated at a table reading. Miller a Scottish amateur geologist and popularizer of science believed that "the fossil record confirmed in broad outline the cosmic drama depicted symbolically in the Bible" DSB; he opposed evolutionary theory and argued vehemently for man's separation from the lower animals. Two 7-3/4" x 11-1/2" ruled sheets written on rectos only of an original poem by Miller consisting of 5 nine-line stanzas completely in Miller's hand and SIGNED by him at the conclusion. First published in the January 1877 issue of THE GALAXY the poem begins: "O Titan soul ascend your starry steep/On golden stair to gods and storied men!/Ascend! nor care where thy traducers creep/For what may well be said of prophets when/A world that's wicked comes to call them good./Ascend and sing! As kings of thought who stood/On stormy heights and held far lights to men/Stand thou and shout above the tumbled roar/Lest brave ships drive and break against the shore./What though thy sounding song be roughly set/Parnassus' Self is rough." One word is added and one entire line is crossed out. This poem was found among the papers of journalist William Conant Church and has an annotation by him on the verso of one page. Church was the publisher of THE GALAXY and this manuscript is likely the one sent for publication. In an entry in his journal dated 1 August 1871 John Burroughs recorded Whitman's fondness for Miller's poetry Barrus Clara: WHITMAN AND BURROUGHS --COMRADES page 60. Whitman met Miller for the first time in 1872 writing of a visit with Miller in a letter to Charles W. Eldridge. <br/><br/>The "Poet of the Sierras" also known as the Buffalo Bill of American literature and sometimes considered to be a Western version of Walt Whitman Joaquin Miller the pen name of Cincinnatus Heine Miller was indeed one of the more colorful authors of the late 19th century known for fabricating many features of life. While still a boy he headed from Oregon to California during the early gold rush where he worked in a number of mining camps. He survived several battles with Indians as well as several altercations with the law. He earned his keep mostly from mining and the Pony Express before his writing sustained him. unknown

Some internal foxing/age-toning but a clean handsome set. A few ink markings to title pages; overall very good. A very important periodical published by Samuel Mitchill a friend of President Thomas Jefferson. Mitchill's "Medical Repository" was probably the first widely known medical Journal in post-Revolutionary America and it contains some important early medical texts but these two volumes are sought for their early real-time reporting on Lewis and Clark's journey up the Missouri River and reports from Zebulon Pike in his western and southern excursions. Mitchill being a friend of Jefferson's was able to obtain reports from the White House regarding correspondence from Lewis and Clark on their findings in the as-yet unexplored far western portions of the Louisiana Purchase. Mitchill's summary of the trip included in Volume IV here pp. 288-291 predates the publication of Lewis and Clark's journals by seven years and would have been among the earliest chances for the general public to obtain a glimpse into the details of their travels and findings.<br/> <br/> Volume V contains several interesting essays as well most notably "Pike's Journey to Explore Louisiana" pp. 297-300 which summarizes Pike's findings in the Red River Valley and other areas between the Mississippi River and the southwest. <br/> <br/> All issues of the "Medical Repository" are scarce in commerce and these few issues which contain highly important and exciting details of early American exploration of the West do quite well at auction when they infrequently appear. 18860001060COUR D'LENE IDAHO JOHANNESBURG SOUTH AFRICA. Very Good. 1886. On offer is a sensational archive of 18 multi page letters most handwritten and some typescript from Jim Miller to his mother and sister. Mr. Miller was a senior gold and silver miner who had worked in the western United States and in Africa mostly. The letters some on company letterhead date from 1886 to 1908 and each are several pages long and diary-like having great content. Mr. Miller is an intelligent and charismatic writer detailing his work and adventures and the archive is especially rich regarding his times working for one of the largest mining operations in Southern Africa during the Boer War. He has many many striking insights observations and comments regarding the conflict. Here are some snippets: "I started out in the summer on a prospecting trip got so far into the mountains that I didn't know where I was went all by guess had no idea where I would come out and cared less. Came out finally at Lewistown on the line of Washington and Idaho Territory after traveling about five hundred miles over the toughest part of the territory. Had no particular place to go so I came to the Cour D'lene to seek my fortune. The town of Wardner is less than a year old and has over one thousand inhabitants and still increasing. The biggest mines that have ever been found in Idaho are supposed to be those that worked in and around Wardner. This country is well represented by Black Hillers the town is named after one of them. It is safe to say that one half of the people in the Cour D'lene country are from the hills. The first one that I have met since I left the hills was in Wardner. This is about like all other mining camps the principle business places are saloons and gambling halls with a few stores. The English papers would lead one to believe that British and Boer have shook hands and agree to be friends that day will never come. When the Boer prisoner returns to his farm and finds only the remains of his house what was once his happy home it will take years and years if ever they do forget the useless destruction of their homes. He is going to invite you to spend the summer with them and they would take a trip through the national park. I would like to have you go and I will pay all expenses. It will be your first chance to visit the western country and maybe George might invite you to stop at Denver the only city in the west. Labour troubles both white and black strikes are the order of the day. If it was not for the Martial law one would not know that the country was in a state of war although there are plenty of columns moving about this district about all they seem to do is travel back and forth over the same road. It is reported that all the Boer leaders are being wined and dined by the British at various centers entertained at the expense of the British taxpayer. Rumor there is a possibility of a general surrender under the terms offered anxious for peace before the coronation. This is a much larger mine then I was on in the states. It is now the third largest gold producing mine in Africa provided we get sufficient native labour it will be the largest Gold Producing Mine in the world we employ 500 white men and 3000 native. When the reports of the San Francisco disaster reached Johannesburg there were many anxious people waiting telegrams from Fathers Mothers Sisters or Brothers who were living in or near the city. I know the part that was destroyed really better than I know Joliet. Have been in Spokane four weeks trying to settle up some business. The Superintendent at the mines is more despised than Cleveland and he is considered the meanest man in the United States. The Sup has to have a body guard. I intend to start for Lewiston Idaho tomorrow expect will have a time getting there as the streams are rising very fast. The snow has been very heavy in the mountains this winter. We started to unwater the mine pumping and hauling at the rate of one million gallans per 24 hours I am unable to say how long it will take. Had a breakdown in one of the shafts and it took weeks to repair it. During that time kept the mill running from one shaft. That was the most trying time I have ever had on a mine. Can buy a woman in this country for 200 dollars in Mexican money good able bodied one quite capable of doing a mans work. While waiting at Elk City for supplies I received work from Mr Clement offering me a good position in Africa. The principle topic of the day is the unsettled question of the importation of unskilled labour there is one thing certain they can not work this country without plenty of cheap unskilled labour. The mining industry of this country is only in its infancy. It is impossible to get sufficient native labour for the natives will not work. Not being able to get up to the mines has been a great disappointment. One consolation there are thousands of others in the same fix. The less the british people say about this war the more they will shine for they have nothing to be proud of. They have been the laughing stock of the world. It seems the British Army are like their women give them time and they will finish it. There have been several instances where the Boers have surrounded and captured parties of British while the officers were enjoying a dance. Of course that is not allowed to be made public. Those in the field know everything is lost and they will continue the guerilla war as long as they know their families are well provided for the by the British. Some of the preachers who are encouraging them were taken out and shot as they have done with some Boers who went on commando again after being released. Everyone outside of military are thoroughly sick and disgusted with the whole business." Included with the archive of letter is a small account book kept by his sister in the early 1900s and a cabinet card of Mr. Miller.
