1839032974London : Printed by Stewart and Murray 1839 A fair copy in the original cloth binding. A scarce work. The binding has wear and the cloth is splitting across the spine and at the spine joints - particularly the rear joint. The spine is cocked to the front with pulling to spine ends. Corners turned. There is some marking on both boards. Endpapers are a little grubby and there are some old pricing figures on the front pastedown. Contents are complete with toning to paper and the occasional grubby mark. There is a light brown stain in the top margin into the gutter affecting pp 15-39 - at its worst it strays into the 2nd line of text - but does not affect readability. Printed by Stewart and Murray hardcover

Hugh Miller was an uneducated quarry man who came to prominence by writing letters to his local editor in Scotland condemning the House of Lords for demanding changes made to the Church of Scotland. His skills as a writer were immediately recognized and he was encouraged to write and publish more articles. Since his first love was the quarry in which he worked he began writing articles on geology which were very well received and published in book form. His autobiography went through numerous editions and was seen as an example for the working class of how a uneducated man could succeed by hard work and trust in his opinions. Miller whose work was praised by such men as Agassiz Carlyle Hunt and Huxley committed suicide two days before Christmas in 1856. Gould and Lincoln unknown
