A scarce work with only one copy held institutionally. Originally published in 1847 in two separate volumes 'Autumn and Winter' and 'Spring and Summer'. This edition has all four seasons bound together in one work. Undated dated through Jisc and the copy held at the University of Cambridge. With in-text engravings throughout by Henry Vizetelly and others. Includes five hand coloured plates one at the beginning of each season and four decorative title pages in colour for each season. Collated complete. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally smart. There is some bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. There is some wear to the cloth in these areas. The spine is slightly faded. Internally firmly bound. The pages are bright and clean with the occasional spot and light age toning. The outside features a scene of school children in front of a school house burnt into the wood and is colored with red green and black paints. The inside has the same great graphics which are in excellent condition. Original brass hinges and clasp. The box contains six compartments filled with pen nibs. Each nib is stamped. Nibs in compartment one are stamped 75/MILLER BRO'S/ANTICORROSIVE; nibs in compartment two are stamped 066/MILLER BROS/VERTICAL; nibs in compartment three are stamped 016/UNITED STATES/SCHOOL PEN; nibs in compartment four are stamped UNITED STATES/BEAD PEN/044; nibs in compartment five are stamped RAILROAD/767; and nibs in compartment six are stamped 04/MILLER BROS/ATTORNEY. Miller Bros. began their manufacture of steel pens in 1882. "The first makers of pens in this country were Harrison & Bradford their factory being located in Mount Vernon New York. The Miller Brothers Cutlery Company bought the mechanical equipment of their plant and engaged Mr. Bradford as superintendent of the new department. In the manufacture of these delicate articles Miller Bros. was as successful as with their cutlery." Miller Bros. manufactured pocket cutlery steel ink erasers and steel pens. A fine and unique item. Very unusual to find a Miller Brothers advertising box filled with the nibs. ca 1900. unknown

Hinges cracked cloth mottled wear and small losses to crown and foot of spine; a good copy only. With folded check laid in see comments following. <br/><br/>The check laid into this copy of Millers best-known book represents an intriguing literary mystery. Made out to Miller and endorsed by him it comes from the account of Allen Thorndike Rice signed for Rice by his attorney and features on the back among various stamps and endorsements the stamp of James Redpath. <br /> <br />Charles Allen Thorndike Rice bought the North American Review in 1876 and remained its publisher and editor-in-chief until his death in 1889. He ran for Congress unsuccessfully in 1886 and in 1889 he was appointed Minister to Russia by President Benjamin Harrison but he died in New York City before he could take up his post. <br /> <br />James Redpath crusading journalist and abolitionist became managing editor of the North American Review in 1886 but appears to have begun his association with the magazine before that date. In several letters to Walt Whitman from October through December of 1885 for example located in the Whitman papers of the Library of Congress Redpath clearly is acting on Rices behalf regarding a Whitman article on Lincoln intended for the Review. So it would seem logical to presume that Redpaths stamp on the check to Miller indicated similarly that it was compensation for contributions to the review or other of Mr. Rices literary enterprises as Redpath puts it in one of the letters to Whitman however a search of the North American Review index for the decade 188089 turns up no mention of Miller. <br /> <br />The check dated December 15 1885 is for the not-inconsiderable sum of sixty-five dollars equivalent to roughly $1735 in current buying power leaving one to wonder just what service Miller had rendered and what Redpaths involvment might have been.Check partially separating at fold but still intact.
