The present copy is #3 of 350 copies of the American issue 136pp. text and illustrated with 48 illustrations in color and 357 in half-tone. The most important study of Russian theatre in the early revolutionary years. As Fulop-Mueller notes: The revolutionizing of the theatre soon became one of the most important parts of Soviet propaganda yet it was this that led to Stanislavsky's influence on Vakhtangov who transformed a handful of inexperience actors into a corps of brilliant character actors. This led to the establishment of the Habima in Palestine in the decades before the establishing of Israel. They toured Europe America and Palestine in 1926 and hence this beautiful book has rare photgraphic images of that era many of which are found nowhere else. They also include those of Leon Bakst Stravinsky Larionov Anna Pavlova Karsavina and other important actors artists and players including marionettes. . Covers also little theatre art theatre and the development of the architectural styles ballet opera and various other costumes art for scenery in black and white and several in rich color. Much of the remarkable developments in American theatre in the post World War II era can be traced to these major influences. An interesting early and photographically- illustrated California wine promotional for the Linda Vista Vineyards in Mission San Jose. The work opens with an essay on the area by the "Poet of the Sierras" Joaquin Miller and then proceeds with photographs and descriptions of the vineyard from the fields to the interiors of the winery the fermenting house and distillery. This is followed by descriptions of the varieties of grapes produced at Linda Vista namely cabernet sauvignon cabernet franc petit verdot malbeck beclan petite sirrah mataro zinfandel mondeuse riesling sauvignon blanc semillon muscatel de bordelaise palomino blanco folle blanche trousseau muscatel de frontignan and burger. A section on the "Wines of Linda Vista" highlights the vineyard's production of cabernet medoc Linda Vista zinfandel claret burgundy chablis moselle johannisberger riesling hock sauterne sherry port muscatelle tokay angelica and brandy. The photographs also feature an elevated view of Mission San Jose the cellar entrance the "working staff of Linda Vista" a storeroom with dozens of wine barrels fair exhibits and "the bottling department." The work ends with a notice that the Linda Vista Vineyard has won blue ribbons for both red and white wines at the recent Columbian Exposition in Chicago. <br> <br> The publication information is taken from a label pasted over the original imprint information on the titlepage indicating L.B. McIver as the publisher. Though published in New York this promotional was actually printed by the H.S. Crocker Company in San Francisco. A rare California wine promotional. Lady Anna Riggs Miller 1741-81 a wealthy heiress set off with her husband John Miller in 1770 on an "ideal jaunt" to Italy - travel for travel's sake - which she recorded in letters to her mother. The correspondence was not at first intended for others but as the tour progressed Miller began to recognize the inadequacies and inaccuracies of other works of travel to Italy - several which she correctly surmised were borrowed from earlier works - and she committed herself to improve upon them for the benefit of future travelers. The result was the first account of the Grand Tour by an English woman writer and with it came a fresh female perspective on the subject that would resonate with future travelers and travel writers for decades. Miller's lengthy work was not only a guide to the traveler but also a survey of Renaissance art and architecture; and her assessments of the contemporary art scene were meant to assist future connoisseurs as they entered the Italian art market as consumers. She became personally acquainted with the artists as she accessed their work and prices and even their personalities e.g.: Giovanni Battista Piranesi "on a good day could be 'agreeable to strangers'" - as quoted in Brian Dolan Ladies of the Grand Tour 2001. Miller's work was referred to countless times by future travelers in their writings both by those who questioned her art criticism and those who praised it her eloquence and comprehensiveness. Lady Miller and her husband later became known in English literary circles for the salon held at their home at Batheaston and for compiling the anthology Poetical Amusements at a Villa near Bath 1775-81. Otherwise the book is sound. In light pencil on the inside front pastedown are the words "gift to flip from Paul Bartel". A just so-so copy but scarce in the first edition particularly signed. In two volumes; 2291pp. and 465pp. Henry Miller's personal copies and he has signed volume II along with the following address of his literary agents below his name 522 5th avenue/c/o Russell & Volkening/ N.Y.C. He continued to live in near povery in the early 1940's. The correspondence covered the years 1935 -1938 with Miller's letters to Michael Fraenkel the model for Boris in Tropic of Cancer the real subject is not Shakespeare's play but Miller's interpretation of Boris's brilliance yet indecisiveness. Certainly one of the most important works giving a key to Miller's writing after completing his then still suppressed in the US and England trilogy. First Editions of these two volumes are very rare though reprints took placed in the 1980's. These early volumes include Michael Fraenkel's letters to Miller. The purple stamp in volume two "printed in Mexico" was one of the ways to avoid the ever present censors one volume has in small letters printed in Belgium This way Miller could claim he had no control over the scandalous content if sued for libel. In Henry Miller Letters to Anais Nin he writes of the background of the publishing history. January 6 1941 "Just got the mail but no checks and no contract or letter from Volkening his literary agent was John Slocum.Had letter from Fraenkel saying he is printing another batch of the Hamlet Letters in Mexico. On May 12 1941 he writes her that Volkening is holding up his mail as he travels through the United States in what will become The Air Conditioned Nightmare. Both volumes bound in original paper wraps printed in red and black large piece of paper torn away from spine of volume two and smaller piece from spine of volume one some toning to spine and edges both volumes housed within a custom leather backed slipcase.
