BAL notes the trade edition in grey cloth and the deluxe edition in white cloth but notes only a single copy of the deluxe edition in this padded leather binding also inscribed by Miller "with love". Books merely signed by Miller turn up but books with inscriptions places and dates are quite uncommon. Small chip to crown light rubbing but a handsome copy of this fragile format. Signed Limited Edition Near ine in heavy brown cloth covered boards with gilt text on the spine and a gilt facsimile of the author's signature on the front board and with illustrated end sheets. A small octavo measuring 8 1/16 by 5 1/2 inches with the cloth on the spine slightly faded and with a small prior owner's book plate on the front paste down. Without a dust jacket as issued; however the book is contained within a near fine cloth covered slip case. One of only 500 special autographed editions with this copy identified as number 308 and signed by the author on the fly title page. This title brought Miller an international reputation as it became his second Broadway success after All My Sons 1947. Many consider it his masterpiece and perhaps the best play written by an American. The play was awarded a Pulitzer Prize in 1949 in the drama category. 139 pages of text and script. He was admitted to the Pennsylvania Bar in 1843 and practiced law in Philadelphia for the remainder of his life. A distinguished member of the Pennsylvania Bar he taught at the University of Pennsylvania Law School and was its dean for four years. He served as a militia officer during the Civil War. A full page plus one margin of Miller's writing in pencil praising Narayan's book and asking about others. Two passages are bracketed in red presumably by Covici and marked "excerpt." In the second of these Miller writes "I was amazed that a man of his world could exhibit such a modern technique. To boot he's a born story teller. With a fine sense of the tragi-comic."
