Miller was a graduate of Wayne State University and later a faculty member at Antioch College in Ohio. He went on went on to write several novels and became a founding editor of the Antioch Review one of the preeminent literary magazines in the United States serving on its editorial board for over thirty years.

The Lotus Press of Detroit Michigan issued just a few titles between 1928 and 1930 including works by Saul K. Padover and William Ellery Leonard. This was not the same publishing outfit as the Lotus Press founded in 1972 by longtime Detroit Poet Laureate Naomi Long Madgett to publish the work of Black poets but there may be some connection between the two Lotus Presses that we were unable to determine. Regardless the present book is both an attractive example of American small press output in the early twentieth century and a scarce work of Black fiction.

OCLC records only five copies all in Michigan. A rare inscribed first edition of this account of the life and exploits of the English-born revolutionary general William Miller 1795-1861 better known as Guillermo Miller a key figure in the Spanish American wars of independence.

Born in Kent Miller was fluent in several languages by the age of seventeen when he enrolled in the British army to fight in the Napoleonic Wars taking part in the Siege of Badajoz and Battle of Vittoria under the Duke of Wellington. In September 1817 hearing of the wars in Latin America he set sail for Buenos Aires to join San Martín's Army of the Andes. Here he took part in the liberation of Chile participating in the decisive battle of Maipú and subsequently joining Lord Cochrane as the commander of marines in the Chilean Navy. During this time he led a force of sixty soldiers during Cochrane's Capture of Valdivia later participating in the failed expedition to Chiloé and the small but significant Battle of Agüi.

After the liberation of Lima Miller was appointed commander of the Peruvian Legion playing a key role in the Battle of Torata. Peru's President José de la Riva Agüero subsequently promoted Miller to General of Brigade and upon the arrival of Simón Bolívar he was made Chief of a cavalry unit composed of Argentines Chileans Peruvians and Colombians. At the Battle of Junín Miller's unit was largely responsible for the Spanish defeat and at the pivotal Battle of Ayacucho - which secured Peru's independence - his initiative in launching an attack at a critical moment without waiting for General Sucre's orders was decisive in securing victory. This unit who became known as the "Hussars of Junín" have ever since served as the guard of the Peruvian Palace of Government in Lima.

Following Peru's independence Miller also settled in Lima. In 1834 in appreciation of his services to the nation and government he received promotion to the rank of Grand Marshal the highest military grade in Peru subsequently holding various public offices. He later served as the British diplomatic Consul to the Kingdom of Hawaii finally returning again to Peru where he died. During the wars Miller was wounded twenty two times his autopsy revealing that he had carried two bullets in his liver for forty years.

The present work based upon General Miller's notes and letters was compiled by his brother John who also adds a historical introduction glossary and indexes providing a detailed account of Miller's time in South America. The work was reissued the following year both in English and in Spanish translation. London: Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown, and Green. hardcover

19350001167RIO DE JANEIRO BRAZIL. Very Good. 1935. Leather. On offer is an original manuscript diary dated 1935 beginning August 17th when the author sets off on the SS American Legion with her husband Harold. Research suggests her husband's last name is Miller as she identifies 'Mother Miller' as one of the well wishers when they board the ship. Her birthday is celebrated the very next day aboard ship. She begins to study Portuguese in earnest. In Rio they stay at the 'Gloria'; she reports that everything is very queer and she is scared to death; the language is impossible; lovely descriptions of Rio de Janeiro; going to Coco Casino; the mountains. After a break of 3 weeks she begins detailed entries of her new domestic and social life in Brazil. Historians and collectors of the history of Brazil will recognize 1935 as a very interesting year given the attempted November revolution known as the 'Graf Zeppelin Revolution'. Our writer makes notes and some little commentary regarding the beginnings and ending of the rebellion. Our author does a super job recording the names of her visitors hosts and companions and the many names include; the Vidals Miss Coehlo the Davies the Shofners the Pratts Mrs. Towill the Redferns of Detroit Mrs. Redford Mrs. Oldbergh Mrs. Burr the Banfills and many many more.
