The compiler Elizabeth S. Miller hails from Geneva New York and dedicates the book to the "Cooking Class of the Young Ladies' Saturday Morning Club". Some stains and chipping to fore edge of first few leaves; age-toning throughout. Spine rebacked with original decorated cloth laid-down showing some wear to the head and foot of the spine. In rubbed and soiled black- and gilt-decorated beveled boards. Good. With a neat ownership signature to preliminary blank "Lynn March. Lettie J. Adams 1877". Bitting page 325; not in Cagle. 189657165Chicago: A.C. McClurg 1896. First Edition. Signed presentation from Miller on the front endpaper: "Dr. Theodore L. Flood Compliments of Author Emily Huntington Miller." Emily Huntington Miller 1833-1913 was an American author poet and educator. She was the Assistant Editor of "The Little Corporal" a children's magazine; Associate Editor of "The Ladies Home Journal"; and co-founder of "St. Nicholas" a publication for children. She was appointed Dean of Women at Northwestern University in 1891. Miller and Jennie Fowler Willing were involved with organizing a convention in Cleveland in 1874 at which the National Woman's Christian Temperance Union was formed. The Rev. Dr. Theodore L. Food 1842-1915 who lived in Meadville began preaching at the age of 18. He served during the Civil War in Company C of the 125th Pennsylvania Volunteers. In 1878 he co-founded the Chautauqua Assembly Daily Herald and in 1880 established the Chautauquan the official publication for the Chautauqua Association. This scarce autographed copy is ex-library from the Meadville Theological School gifted to the library by Flood. White call numbers on front covers & few other library markings including circular cards on rear endpapers the book was never checked out. Still a very nice copy! This is an envelope 12 1/4 by 12 11/16 inches with a paper label the text of which is detailed below. The envelope contains a color cover plate showing the set with an imprint of the Patriot Publishing Company plus 18 black and white photographic plates on pages measuring 12 1/4 by 11 3/4 inches with extensive printed descriptions beneath each photograph. The paper label on the front of the envelope reads as follows: "Photographic Prints of Civil War pictures taken by Mathew B. Grady. These wonderful negatives made by order of President Lincoln then buried for nearly half a century have been discovered in time for the semi-centennial celebration of the Civil War in 1911. Being a few of the 3500 rare photographs contain in the "Photographic History of the Civil War" in ten volumes published by the Review of Reviews Company New York." "The appendices contain the early histories of inoculation and a list of German doctoral dissertations on inoculation 1720-52. There is also an excellent bibliography." – Garrison and Morton 5436.1. The author took her M.A. degree from Johns Hopkins and a Ph.D. from Cornell. She later taught the history of medicine at Hopkins of the history of science at Cornell and then taught medial history at Case Western. " Genevieve Miller surmounted two disciplinary challenges over the course of a long accomplished career. Miller first strayed into medical history in the 1940s a time when physicians still dominated that field and historians were seen as interlopers at best or incompetents at worst. Despite this circumstance she pursued graduate studies in medical history becoming one of the first women to earn a PhD in this field. Her dissertation published as The Adoption of Inoculation for Smallpox in England and France 1957 won immediate acclaim and is still considered a classic work in the history of medicine. Miller's second challenge lay in a career shift to the domain of medical museology. She became the first nonphysician director of the Dittrick Museum of Medical History at Case Western Reserve University CWRU in 1967 bringing to that endeavor training in museology and a commitment to public history.
