Published in 1911 on the 50th anniversary of the beginning of the war. Condition of each volume is Fine. Covers have slight wear very light rubbing and some spotting. Top page edges on all 10 volumes gilt which is in very nice shape. Gilt lettering and decorations on all 10 spines also bright and intact. Inside pages including hundreds of photographs are clean and bright with no spotting or foxing. All 10 volumes bound in blue boards no DJ. Each volume is slightly oversize and contains about 300 pages of photographs and text for a total of about 3000 pages of photographs and explanatory text for the set. A heavy set that will require extra postage. Please contact us for postage prices. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall . endpapers are blue with gold top edges. This is the first edition of this epic work and has thousands of scenes photographed from 1861-1865. It has has special text from about 39 knowledgeable people Pres. Wm. Taft and officers of both the Confederate and Union Armies. Some of the photos were previously unpublished were from private individuals. The last volume number ten has the "2-Ed" in the bottom margin of page 323 which makes this volume ten a first edition but second issue of volume ten. A very fine set. Candid portrait photograph of Henry Miller in spectacles and flat cap taken at the 1962 International Writers' Conference held at McEwan Hall Edinburgh. The conference - which was on the subject of "The Novel Today" - was organized by the publisher John Calder and featured seventy writers from twenty countries. The conference gained some notoriety from the argument between Alexander Trocchi and Hugh MacDiarmid the latter calling the former "cosmopolitan scum." Miller along with William Burroughs sided with Trocchi who replied "I am only interested in lesbianism and sodomy."<br /> <br /> The photographer Peter Keen 1928-2009 was commissioned to record the event for THE SUNDAY TIMES. His other notable work includes portraiture - some in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery - and the photographic illustrations to Ted Hughes's RIVER London 1983. unknown

The postcards which measure approximately 6 x 4 inches were produced by Museum Reproductions of Alhambra California. The six Miller's illustrations are listed below along with their original medium and dimensions:</p><p>• The Hat and the Man 1947 Watercolor 10 ¾ x 14 ¾ inches<br />• The Ancestor 1958 Watercolor 13 x 16 inches<br />• Marine Fantasy 1949 Watercolor 19 ½ x 15 ½ inches<br />• Deux Jeunes Filles Watercolor and Ink 11 ½ x 14 inches<br />• Girl with Bird – Watercolor 14 x 19 ¾ inches<br />• A Bridge Somewhere 1952 - Watercolor and ink 11 ½ x 13 ½ inches<br /><br />The illustrations accompanying this description show the artwork front faces of four of the postcards plus one photo of a message/address side to show the Henry Miller signature. He was known for breaking with existing literary forms and developing a new type of semi-autobiographical character study social criticism philosophical reflection stream of consciousness explicit language sex surrealist free association and mysticism. His most characteristic works of this kind are Tropic of Cancer Black Spring Tropic of Capricorn and The Rosy Crucifixion trilogy which are based on his experiences in New York and Paris all of which were banned in the United States until 1961. He also wrote travel memoirs and literary criticism and painted watercolors. In addition to his literary abilities Miller produced numerous watercolor paintings and wrote books on this field. He was a close friend of the French painter Gregoire Michonze. It is estimated that Miller painted 2000 watercolors during his life and that 50 or more major collections of Miller's paintings exist. The Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas at Austin holds a selection of Miller's watercolors as did the Henry Miller Museum of Art in Omachi City in Nagano Japan before closing in 2001. Originally included 12 loose watercolor plates by Miller not present. Book protected by decorative blue/gold wrap-around dust jacket. Housed in large 19"X23 7/8" wood/cork custom box with sliding cover. Box is foam-lined with front pastedown a b/w photo of Miller with his wife and subject of the book Hoki Tokudath. She was the Director of the San Francisco Poetry Center and a dominant force in the San Francisco Poetry Renaissance of the mid-1950s. Her circle included Emil White Lawrence Ferlinghetti Henry Miller Kenneth Patchen William Everson James Broughton and Jack Spicer among others. First edition first issue. Published by New Directions but printed in Ireland with the four tipped-in black & white photos present. A few small spots to the beige cloth covers with some light bumping to the corners else fine. Clean tight unmarked. In a very good price intact dust jacket with some edge chipping and short tears now in an archival mylar cover. A nice looking and unique copy for the Miller collector.
