A View from the Bridge is a play by Pulitzer Prize winning american playwright Arthur Miller first staged on September 29 1955 as a one-act verse drama with A Memory of Two Mondays at the Coronet Theatre on Broadway. The play was unsuccessful and Miller subsequently revised the play to contain two acts; this version is the one with which audiences are most familiar today. The two-act version premièred in the New Watergate theatre club in London's West End under the direction of Peter Brook on October 11 1956. The play is set in 1950s America in an Italian American neighborhood near the Brooklyn Bridge in New York. It employs a chorus and narrator in the character of Alfieri. Eddie the tragic protagonist has an improper love of and almost obsession with Catherine.Miller's interest in writing about the world of the New York docks originated with an unproduced screenplay that he developed with Elia Kazan in the early 1950s entitled The Hook that addressed corruption on the Brooklyn docks.Kazan later directed 'On the Waterfront' which dealt with the same subject.Miller said that he heard the basic account that developed into the plot of 'A View from the Bridge' from a lawyer who worked with longshoremen who related it to him as a true story. The 2015 London revival of this play landed two Laurence Olivier Awards and a transfer to Broadway.Very scarce to find as a signed title.Ashtonrarebooks welcomes direct contact.</p> Cresset Place hardcover
1972177482New York: no publisher 1972. Why don't we just try it and see what happens Rehearsal script signed on the title page by the author of Miller's "serio-comic treatment of man's predicament in the Garden of Eden" Whitehead. The text is significantly different from the version first published by the Viking Press in 1973. Miller's play was announced in the New York Times on 9 September 1971. The article notes that Miller "began writing the script about a year ago" and that the producer Robert Whitehead noted "we still haven't got a printed script" see Calta. During the rehearsal period there were changes to the cast and also the director. There were also some significant rewrites. After 21 previews the show opened on 30 November 1972 on Broadway. It ran for 20 performances. Miller would later rewrite the piece as a musical. The present script comprises title page the text of Act 1 81 pages and Act 2 63 pages. The title page notes details of the producer as "Dowling-Whitehead-Stevens" of 1564 Broadway. The published version of the play is structured in three acts. The present script has two acts with two scenes in Act 1 and differences from the published text: from changes in stage directions to passages of dialogue. Act 2 has for example an exchange between Lucifer and Chemuel which is entirely cut from the published text. Folio. Mimeographic typescript 145 leaves 279 x 216 mm printed on rectos only additional leaves numbered "2-13A" and "2-17A".
