Ex-lib with 2 small stamps to t.p. & a lightly penciled purchase annotation in the gutter after the 1st leaf 10 Nov 61 JR $10.00. 54 2 pp. "Register and Descriptive List of Convicts under Sentence": pp. 12 - 35 beginning with 1851; "Transcript of Received Escaped and Returned Prisoners since the Inspection of State Prison Books": pp 38 - 40. Last leaf blank. 8vo. 23.5 cm x 14 cm. This an interesting factual account regarding the early days of the prison an era when it wasn't quite impregnable edifice that now stands; in 1854 75 of 520 incarcerated individuals had escaped without recapture. This situation caused Governor John Bigler to write: "Gentlemen: Having learned from various reliable sources that quite a number of escapes have recently occurred from the State Prison which to some extent is in your charge I deem it my duty respectfully to invite your attention to the section of the law regulating your duties. These escapes permit me here to remark give great force to allegations daily and publicly made that the prison building is insecure and that its management is not such as to fully accomplish the object of its erection in prevention and punishment of crime." However since the place is still going strong one can be reasonably confident the governor's concerns were addressed. Rare; Not in Cowan Greenwood nor Rocq. Not in the LoC on-line catalogue. A stampless cover from an officer in the 57th Georgia Infantry Regiment posted at Vicksburg Mississippi as a parolee after he was wounded and captured during the Battle of Champion Hill Baker's Creek

1863009356Vicksburg Mississippi: Company K 57th Georgia Regiment 1863. This stampless cover was mailed by Miller from Vicksburg to a friend back home in Georgia. He has annotated it along the left edge "From A J Miller / Co. K 57th Ga Rgt". It bears a 25mm double-circle Vicksburg Miss postmark dated "Jun 25". A "10" rate mark was handstamped next to the postmark indicating that it was sent 10-cents postage due. The rate mark has been covered over with ink cross-hatching probably applied when it was picked up and the post due fee was paid. The envelope shows some wear and is missing a small part of its back flap. This a rather scarce Vicksburg postal marking. See page 121 in the Confederate States of America Catalog and Handbook of Stamps and Postal History. Company K of the 57th Georgia Infantry Regiment was known as the Oconne Greys. The regiment was organized in the spring of 1862 from residents of Troup Peach Montgomery and Onconne Counties. It first served in Tennessee and Kentucky before being reassigned to T. H. Taylor's Brigade where it was employed in the defense of Vicksburg. It fought in the bloody battle of Champion Hill Baker's Creek twenty miles to the east of Vicksburg on 16 May 1863 the most important engagement during General Grant's Vicksburg Campaign and considered by some to be the pivotal battle of the entire war. The Union needed to win to achieve ultimate victory and the Confederacy needed a victory to survive. One of the Union commanders at the battle reported that it was a savage struggle; "It was literally a hill of death." Following the Confederate Army's decisive defeat the siege of Vicksburg became inevitable and the fate of the city was sealed Official records show that Lieutenant Miller was captured during the Battle of Champion Hill after being critically wounded in the leg. He was immediately paroled and allowed to rejoin his unit which retreated into Vicksburg on the 2nd of June where it remained until the city fell on July 4th and the entire regiment was forced to surrender. Miller was invalided on December 15 1864 and allowed to return to his home at Milledgeville where he remained until the end of the war. A scarce postmark from an identified Confederate soldier who was wounded and captured at Vicksburg but a little raggedly so priced accordingly. Company K, 57th Georgia Regiment books

Wrappers expertly mended along the spine closed vertical tear at top edge of front wrapper expertly repaired wrappers lightly soiled and foxed. Clean internally. Very good. An interesting early and photographically- illustrated California wine promotional for the Linda Vista Vineyards in Mission San Jose. The work opens with an essay on the area by the "Poet of the Sierras" Joaquin Miller and then proceeds with photographs and descriptions of the vineyard from the fields to the interiors of the winery the fermenting house and distillery. This is followed by descriptions of the varieties of grapes produced at Linda Vista namely cabernet sauvignon cabernet franc petit verdot malbeck beclan petite sirrah mataro zinfandel mondeuse riesling sauvignon blanc semillon muscatel de bordelaise palomino blanco folle blanche trousseau muscatel de frontignan and burger. A section on the "Wines of Linda Vista" highlights the vineyard's production of cabernet medoc Linda Vista zinfandel claret burgundy chablis moselle johannisberger riesling hock sauterne sherry port muscatelle tokay angelica and brandy. The photographs also feature an elevated view of Mission San Jose the cellar entrance the "working staff of Linda Vista" a storeroom with dozens of wine barrels fair exhibits and "the bottling department." The work ends with a notice that the Linda Vista Vineyard has won blue ribbons for both red and white wines at the recent Columbian Exposition in Chicago. The publication information is taken from a label pasted over the original imprint information on the titlepage indicating L.B. McIver as the publisher. Though published in New York this promotional was actually printed by the H.S. Crocker Company in San Francisco. A rare California wine promotional.
