On offer is a unique original 1904 manuscript diary handwritten by the charming sometimes acerbic and sometimes odd young woman named Mary K. Barber of Yantic Connecticut. While not specified we believe she is 15 or 16 in charge of 'scholars' at the local school. Here are some snippets: 'My patience are severely tried this afternoon. Helped Papa with his 5 minute job that takes 2 ½ hours. No one bothered me about my birthday .James appears rather solemn. Made the children quite a bit disappointed. A pleasant day with plenty of snow cold as Greenland. Everybody is froze. Gave the scholars a talking to. All happy to think vacation is coming. Received prices for certain things. Did not get my carnations. My carnations came today. It's joking all the time. Papa has gone cowslipping. Poor little Everett hurt his eye. Went to a Covenent meeting. Some did not like what Anna Richardson said. A new boy but a torment. Visited the ship works saw steam augers. Glad to return to my boarding place again.' Published by Jules Meynial between 1916 and 1921 "La Guirlande des Mois" was a delightful five-issue series of almanacs embellished with striking in-text drawings and pochoir plates by George Barbier. Filled with calendars poems articles and fiction by noted cultural figures of the period they evoke a privileged world of elegant splendor. Illustrated with five in-text drawings and six splendid pochoir plates by George Barbier this fifth and last issue of "La Guirlande des Mois" contains a poem by René Boylesve Vers l'Absente and four short stories La Sphère Enchanté; La Guêpe; Madame Fleur; L'"Imbroïlle" de l'Opéra by respectively Albert Flament Gérard d'Houville René Bizet and George Barbier. This volume is complete with its 12-page 1921 calendar at rear as well as its eight Note pages left blank. Age-toning to slipcase. Dust-jacket sunned along spine with minor offsetting to covers. Binding slightly frayed at head and tail of spine. Text in French. Slipcase and dust-jacket in overall good binding in good interior in very good pochoir plates in near fine to fine condition. Daniel Barber has left a 'History of My Own Times' Washington 1827 in which he states that his father and mother were Congregational Dissenters of strict Puritanic rule and he continued in that sect until his twenty-seventh year when he joined the Episcopalians. But eventually the question of Apostolic Succession came back to him and he realized that Episcopalianism didn't satisfy the question of Apostolic Succession - the Catholics actually had it and the Episcopalians didn't. Meantime his son Virgil had also become a fine upstanding Episcopalian priest. He and his wife Jerusha were in charge of a good school and had a comfortable life with their children. But a chance encounter with a pamphlet on the life of St. Francis Xavier fired his heart to seek the faith that motivated a man like St. Francis to do what he'd done. Eventually Virgil and Jerusha became Catholic. Then Chloe converted along with a number of other members of the family. And finally Daniel also became Catholic.
