Henry Howe October 11 1816 – October 14 1893 was an American author who wrote histories of several states in the United States. The Historical Collections of New York came out in 1841 and was profitable at sale of 10000. <br /> <br /> "The spring of 1840 had arrived when one day I walked into Mr. Barber's office and inquired if he had thought of making a book on New York State. East Windsor CT; D. New Haven CT. At death of his father when John was 14 years of age he became the principal financial supporter of his mother and five siblings. John began to write and illustrate his own religious and historical books and became a success. HIs Connecticut Historical Collections has been called "the first popular local history published in the United States" bibliola dot com.Henry Howe 1816-1893 b. New Haven CT; d. Columbus OH. His father - Hezekiah Howe - owned a bookstore and was the first publisher of Noah Webster's American Dictionary of the English Language 1828. Young Henry grew up amidst books and the printing trade contributing articles to the local press. In 1838 he was greatly impressed with John Warner Barber's book Historical Collections of Connecticut which Barber had compiled by traveling the state collecting material and making sketches. Howe determined to make similar books and compiled one on New York 1841 New Jersey 1842 and Virginia 1845. His three-volume Historical Collections of Ohio 1847 was immensely popular. He moved to Cincinnati in 1848 and continued his historical writing including The Great West and books of travel and biography. His Times of Rebellion in the West written just after the first American Civil War also sold well. An historical marker placed by the Franklin County Historical Society at Howe's home in Columbus reads "He preserved for posterity the story of the brave men and women who founded this great state." Very good although rebacked with original end pages with gilt text stamping on the spine it is in its original blind embossed cloth covered boards with an embossed gilt laurel seal on the front board. An octavo of 8 3/4 by 5 3/4 inches with the cloth at the tips of the boards and lower edges of the boards worn through. There is a dampness stain on the front end sheets and foxing throughout the contents. Without a dust jacket. 620 pages of text and illustrated with a hand-colored double frontis and with 120 from engravings. The hand-colored fold-out map of the New England states New York Pennsylvania and New Jersey follows page 8 and suffers only from multiple creases and very minor losses to the margins several other maps within the text and a number of plates. A thick octavo measuring 8 3/4" by 5 1/2" with mild rubbing to the cloth at the head and heel of the spine. The contents are clean and bright with no foxing or tanning to the pages. 608 pages which are illustrated with 230 engravings a frontispiece and 12 plates following pages 44 116 140 148 220 268 372 424 432 472 508 and 552 Howes calls for 10 plates and the map. The hand-colored yellow red green and blue fold-out map of the state following the front index page 12 is in fine condition with no tears or chips. Howes also does not note this reprint copy of 1846 printed in New York City. Several early prior owner's have penciled their names and made mathematical notes on the end pages. Howes calls for 10 plates and the map. The hand-colored fold-out map of New York following the front index page 12 is in very acceptable condition with a 3" long tear at the left margin and a 3" long closed tear at one of the lower folds of the map both professionally repaired. Several early prior owner's have penciled their names and made mathematical notes on the end pages. Considered by Howes to be "mildly scarce". FROM THE AUTHORS PREFACE: The object of this work is to present to the reader a series of Historical Incidents in American History some of which may not be generally known in an historical pictorial and poetic form. We are aware that the plan of this work differs from any we have yet seen but we flatter ourselves that it will be found interesting and in-structive. In the historical introduction to each of the scenes de-scribed we have aimed at accuracy and simplicity ; in the lines that follow there is of course latitude given to introduce moral and religious reflections. Whatever we have advanced of this nature we trust will be found in accordance with the great and vital principles of Christianity. Instead of glorifying mere military he-roes as is too often the case among all nations we have aimed to give prominence to men who practiced the virtues of Christianity. Such men only are the real patriots and nobles of the human race and such only are worthy of lasting remembrance. . . Whatever may be thought of this work as a mere literary production we have aimed to produce strictly an American Book the influence of which we trust will be found on the side of God and humanity and we believe some part of it at least will in some form live after we father and daughter have left these mortal scenes. -- J.
