Cover title: Barber's Illustrated Proverbs<br /> 12mo; 252pp; brown ribbed cloth blind-stamped decorative frame around a gilt-stamped title gilt lettering and vignette on spine; pale yellow endpapers ownership on ffep; five-panel leporello frontispiece; wood-engraved illustration at the beginning of each chapter; scuffing to boards with loss at head & tail of spine and corners foxing but clean and without odors; very good. Twenty illustrations appear on the five-panel frontispiece titled "The Proverbs of Solomon King of Israel." Four of the illustrations use proverbs to warn against alcohol fitting in with the Temperance social movement that was growing in strength at this time. One surprising illustration warning against evil has a couple surrounded by roses with the woman's breast exposed. Sixty-two illustrated chapters each with a traditional not biblical proverb a description of the illustration and an explanation of the wisdom. The end of each chapter lists many other common or simple conventional truths that relate to the one highlighted.<br /> <br /> A thought-provoking look at common cultural wisdom during the 19th century. Part III was printed in Frederick Maryland by Neilson Poe. <br /> "The conversion of the Barber family despite the prejudices of a Puritan education and environment was one of the most notable and far-reaching in its results of any recorded in the early annals of the Church in New England. Daniel Barber has left a 'History of My Own Times' Washington 1827 in which he states that his father and mother were Congregational Dissenters of strict Puritanic rule and he continued in that sect until his twenty-seventh year when he joined the Episcopalians. But eventually the question of Apostolic Succession came back to him and he realized that Episcopalianism didn't satisfy the question of Apostolic Succession - the Catholics actually had it and the Episcopalians didn't. Meantime his son Virgil had also become a fine upstanding Episcopalian priest. He and his wife Jerusha were in charge of a good school and had a comfortable life with their children. But a chance encounter with a pamphlet on the life of St. Francis Xavier fired his heart to seek the faith that motivated a man like St. Francis to do what he'd done. Eventually Virgil and Jerusha became Catholic. Then Chloe converted along with a number of other members of the family. And finally Daniel also became Catholic. An octavo of 8 by 5 inches with rubbing to the boards and the edges of the boards The contents are mildly foxed in the margins throughout. The fold-out map is missing. 624 pages of text illustrated a frontispiece and from "numerous" woodcut engravings. Leather on spine is peeled raw and gilded lettering is partially worn away. Spine ends are chipped and soiled. Despite loose front board binding is still good. Page edges have extensive dark staining pitting and soiling. First two pages have irregularly chipped edges and some small torn holes. Pastedowns have scribbled marks and dark spot stains. An octavo measuring 8 3/4 by 5 1/4 inches with the leather at the head of the spine worn down to the text block and shallow chipping of the leather at the heel of the spine. There is also considerable foxing throughout the pages but none so bad as to render the text unreadable. 576 pages of text illustrated with a frontispiece and throughout the text with line drawings and wood cut engravings by the author.
