Het niet zo talrijk bewaard gebleven, Brussels edelsmeedwerk uit de 17de eeuw is voldoende bekend en beschreven. Daarentegen is nog geen omvattend onderzoek gepubliceerd over de producenten van die kunstvoorwerpen. Hier wordt het resultaat van een jarenlang en systematisch archiefonderzoek te kennen gegeven naar het leven en het werk van 466 edelsmeden die in de loop van die eeuw als goud-of zilversmid werkzaam zijn geweest in de Brabantse hoofdstad. De voornaamste bron van inkomsten waren voor al de beoefenaars van de edelmeedkunst uiteraard de bestellingen die ze van verschillende zijden mochten uitvoeren. In eerste instantie waren er de aankopen van kerkelijk en burgerlijk zilverwerk door de openbare besturen, van het Hof, de hofhouding en de rekenkundige diensten van het centraal bestuur. Meerdere gouverneurs-generaal hadden hun eigen hofgoudsmid of schonken, bij Brusselse goudsmeden gekocht, kerkelijk zilver aan de plaatselijke kloosters en kerken. De regionale instellingen, zoals de Raad van Brabant, bestelde zegels en stempels bij Brusselse goudsmeden. De Brusselse magistraat had een eigen stadsschilder maar geen geatitreerde edelsmid. Voor het onderhoud en de herstellingen van het eigen stadszilver, de bestelling van zilveren bekers voor verdienstelijke stadsambtenaren en voor leden van het stadsbestuur die het peterschap hadden aanvaard over een zevende zoon van een Brussels burger, werd eveneens een beroep gedaan op gekende en plaatselijke edelsmeden. Dank zij de bewaard gebleven minuten van Brusselse notarissen leren wij ook de contracten kennen waarbij burgers allerlei edelsmeedwerk bestellen bij goudsmeden in de stad. Het ambacht van goudsmid werd dikwijls bedreven in een beperkt familiaal kader, in die zin dat het van vader op ?(schoon)zoon, of op een nader familielid werd overgedragen. Uiteindelijk zijn er nog enkele bijkomstige gegevens te vermelden, zoals de woon- en werkplaats van de Brusselse edelsmeden. Toeval of niet, meerdere beoefenaars van dit kunstambacht woonden op de Grasmarkt. Eigenaardig genoeg wordt er geen enkel zilversmid vermeld die zijn woning had op het Zilversmidstraatje. Anderen waren eigenaars van hun huis, of verhuurden huizen in hun bezit. Betrekkelijk veel edelsmeden waren huurders en betaalden een uiteenlopende, waarschijnlijk met de aard van de buurt samenhangende huur. De uithangborden van hun huizen houden niet altijd een onmiddellijk verband met de aard van hun beroep. Het Gulden Slot, de Gulden Fontein, de Diamant zijn van die aard. Toepasselijker was uiteraard de drie Coppen (drie Bekers, trouwens een element van het wapenschild van het ambacht) op de Grasmarkt, de Peerlen Krans (Parelenkrans), het Juweel, de Gulden Wereld op het Kantersteen, en uiteraard het eigen ambachtshuis huis de Spiegel, bij het bombardement van de stad in 1695 grotendeels vernield en met zware leningen opgenomen door het ambacht, weder opgebouwd. Het boek eindigt met een daaruit voortvloeiende index, verdeeld in vijf categorieën: - 1885 namen van personen; - 259 ambachten, beroepen en functies; - 145 technische begrippen en zakenregister; - 464 toponymen; - 222 uithangborden.
