Cheffins, with numerous engraved illustrations, garden plans, text in decorative borders. original blind-stamped cloth, gilt spine title lettering and decorations, all edges gilted, spine worn, endpaper name dated July 1854, clean, very good copy, plates with tissue guards. The plates include one of insects, all the others of flowers including camellia, dianthus, hyacinth, peargonium, phlox, tulip, pyrethrum, etc, all beautifully painted and presented. There are many other fine illustrations including of Victorian flower holders. Other experts contributed to the book including Arthur Henfrey, J. O. Westwood, George Glenny, etc.

Wood 231: 'An interesting account of the author's observations on the flora and fauna of Australasia, in which birds figure large, at least half of the 23 chapters containing references to them'. The book contains an extensive chapter on the platypus, which the auithor here calls a water mole, together with a hand colored plate of same. Fitch, who painted the botanical subjects, was one of the most respected botanical artists of his time. Other subjects are by artists G.F. Angas, Thomas Baines and Joseph Wolf, each a highly respected and ijmportant natural history artist. An important contribution including marine biology, ornithology, bird migration, plants including those with agricultural application, botanic garden, medicinal remedies, etc. The last chapter describes overland routes from Sydney to Southampton. Included is a loose clipping from a periodical on the New Guinea Ant Eater with illustration.

A pi The attractive plates are views of countryside, towns, sea scenes, etc, images of varying size but average about 14 x 10 cm, plus nice large margins, and are a collection made in the 19th century of this famous artist's work. Stanfield (1793-1867), member of the Royal Academy, friend of Charles Dickens and Captain Maryatt, illustrated many fine books and plate books of the period. He is regarded as one of England's finest marine painters, and considered as Turner's rival as a delineator of cloud forms. Many of his works are in important galleries and museums.

Graesse I, 433. Lipsius / LS 47. The Bourbon historian and scholar Pierre Bizot (1630-1696) was one of the first authors to take an interest in modern numismatics. The author also proposed to reconstruct the history of the Netherlands based on the production and description of the medals. Metal production in the Netherlands from 1566 to 1680 is described with a great luxury with both numismatic and historical information. The book of Bizot had been printed for the first time in Paris in 1687 in folio format. In this second edition in smaller format, the first two volumes reproduce the text of Bizot. However the editor there has inserted several additions and had many plates engraved again, that were engraved in reverse in the first edition issued a year earlier in 1687. Includes Remarques sur Ledition De Paris De la Republique de Hollande de Mr. Bizot at the end of the 2nd volume. A supplement was published over a decade later.
