Wrappers detached edges chipped and creased some small losses to spine sometime neatly repaired with glue. A few faint pencil marks. The first edition of the third pamphlet in a series published with the Labour Press by socialist writer and early gay activist Edward Carpenter 1844-1929. The first three titles ‘Sex-Love and its Place in a Free Society’ ‘Woman and her Place in a Free Society’ and this one were all published for public circulation while the fourth ’Homogenic Love and its Place in a Free Society’ was privately distributed. Carpenter argues here for the advancement of women’s rights stating that current law ‘as in actual marriage. still leaves woman uncertain as to her rights over her own body or in politics where it still denies to her a voice in the framing of the laws which are to bind her’ and he declares ‘As true Freedom cannot be without Love so true Love cannot be without Freedom’ pp.34-35. Original Autograph letter signed of Mary Carpenter to Alderman Mansfield of Northampton and original mailing envelope are pasted into the volume Letter is 1 page Jan 10 1877 signed at closing "Mary Carpenter" regarding the election of a woman to the School Board.along with 2 obituaries of Mary Carpenter who died June 15 1877. <br /> <br /> The letter states in part "Thanks for sending us the paper containing the very gratifying announcement of the election of Mrs. Mansfield.It is a grand triumph!" A note at bottom signed M.P. Mansfield explains the meaning of Carpenter's letter "This letter was written on the receipt of a paper containing the account of the election of my wife to the School Board." Carpenter was one of the foremost public speakers of her time and is best remembered for the huge contribution she made to educational and penal reform. She opened "ragged schools" to give an education to the children of the poor and introduced reformatories which took a caring and constructive stance for young offenders. Mary Carpenter also campaigned for better education for women and reforms to prisons. Following a meeting with Frederick Douglass Mary Carpenter became fervently opposed of the slave trade particularly the Fugitive Slave Law of 1850. She traveled extensively in America Europe and India where she also sought reforms similar to those she pursued in Britain. She was a pioneer in the field of equality for women and stood almost alone as a female orator who was widely listened to and respected. unknown

This ownership is also neatly written on the title page. Other than some wavy ink lines on two pages of the prelims the contents are clean and unmarked other than expected age toning. The book is in original condition the contents are complete and it would be a suitable candidate for rebinding. Hardback in embossed brown cloth with gilt title on spine. The present report written by Republican Senator Matthew Hale Carpenter 1824 – 1881 responds to the memorial presented by numerous prominent suffragists including Susan B. Anthony Elizabeth Cady Stanton Isabella Beecher Hooker Elizabeth S. Bladen Olympia Brown and Josephine J. Griffing. The suffragists' memorial argued that the 1870 ratification of the 15th Amendment which granted voting rights to citizens of the United States regardless of "race color or previous condition of servitude" should also grant women the right to vote. Carpenter and the Senate denied that the 15th Amendment applies to women's suffrage and rejected the memorial.
