ill., br. Nel panorama del cinema fantastico, John Carpenter è una vera e propria leggenda. I suoi film hanno segnato in maniera indelebile l'immaginario di generazioni di spettatori. Le sue opere solo superficialmente possono essere associate alla fantascienza o all'horror: in realtà sfruttano i meccanismi del genere per raccontarci i problemi e le contraddizioni della nostra società. Carpenter è per carattere un regista fuori dal tempo, o in anticipo sui tempi: molti dei suoi film più rappresentativi al momento dell'uscita nelle sale non furono capiti dal pubblico, o furono addirittura rifiutati, per essere rivalutati solo in un secondo momento e diventare veri e propri classici. Lo stesso regista si scontrò a più riprese con le regole degli Studios, finendo per essere riconosciuto come autore prima in Europa che in patria. Anche se da tempo si è ritirato dalle scene, John Carpenter resta ancora un punto di riferimento: lo spirito inquieto che anima il suo cinema non smette di parlarci e i suoi film sono ormai dei cult, con i quali spettatori e giovani registi sono chiamati a fare i conti.

John Carpenter è considerato da decenni "maestro dell'horror", titolo meritato grazie all'eredità che il genere ha ricevuto dalle sue opere, tuttavia tale titolo rischia di appannare ciò che questo straordinario regista ha donato anche al genere fantascientifico. L'intento di questo volume è infatti porre l'attenzione su ciò che Carpenter ha fatto per il cinema di fantascienza. Dopo averlo incontrato di persona, è stato chiaro che la fantascienza fu effettivamente il suo primo amore in termini cinematografici. La scelta di impostare questo libro con un taglio decisamente documentaristico è dovuta al desiderio di esporre i fatti, epurandoli da congetture o valutazioni estranee ai film in oggetto nella loro originalità. In queste pagine sono contenute le storie, gli aneddoti e le curiosità che orbitano intorno alle produzioni fantascientifiche di quest'ultimo, grazie ai racconti e alle memorie che Carpenter ed alcuni addetti ai lavori hanno deciso di condividere per la realizzazione di questo volume. Un percorso attraverso un pezzo importante di storia del cinema, arricchito da foto inedite e interviste esclusive.
