Near Fine. oblong 7.75x10in; 32 pp. Unpaginated 45 images and illustrations 22 relating to Cook and 23 relating to Peary with long narrative captions map on inside front cover detailing both routes to the North Pole; Cream stiff paper covers with black border around illustration of ice field sailing ship blue background and white lettering on front and oval images of Cook and Peary; Some age toning to paper covers no tears chips or missing pieces. This souvenir pamphlet appears to have been produced quickly from images and illustrations on file. The publishing company is located in Portland Maine which is where Peary has his home. The narrative states that Cook achieved the North Pole on April 21 1908 and Peary on April 6 1909. At this time there was no controversy on who actually achieved the North Pole just a celebration that two Americans "nailed" the Pole. L. H. Nelson Company books

Covers worn and chipped lightly soiled separated from text block. Outer leaves a bit chipped some light scattered soiling. Final three leaves with manuscript recipes. Unrecorded community cook book for the Ladies' Aid Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church in American Falls Idaho. The preface contains a list of contributors though individual recipes are not identified with a specific woman. In addition to the usual range of meat cheese soups vegetable bread and dessert recipes this work includes sections on "Canning and Drying Vegetables" and "Meat Canning Recipes." These speak to the slightly frontier nature of living in southeastern Idaho at the start of the twentieth century. At the time American Falls was a town of about 1000 people. A scarce community cook book compiled by the East End Circle Woman's Guild for the benefit of the First Congregational Church in Wilmette. Wilmette is a small village north of Chicago perched on the shore of Lake Michigan. The volume opens with "Suggestions for First Course and moves on through soups fish meats vegetables salads a variety of baked goods and desserts pickles and preserves egg dishes cheese dishes and more. There is a section for "Entrees and Vegetarian Dishes" as well as "Chafing Dish Recipes" and "Fireless Cooker Recipes." Local advertisements are interspersed throughout and the color plate is an ad for Swans Down Cake Flour. "Segunda edicion" of this scarce and extensive cook book first published in 1905. The current edition has been revised corrected and updated with more than 300 additional recipes. The verso of the introduction is adorned with a handsome wood cut of an opulent meal at table. The volume is filled with a wide variety of recipes for papas tortillas huevos lenguas sopas lomos salsas pastels and more. Presumably a popular manual for family dining the first edition is very scarce with only two copies listed in OCLC; of this edition we locate fewer than ten copies. unknown books

A scarce and substantial regional cook book published by the women of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Medford Oregon. Recipes are divided into categories most listing the contributor. The volume contains a wide array of recipes for soups vegetables eggs and cheeses meats a variety of desserts sandwiches pickles preserves and a section for menus. Medford is located in southwestern Oregon along present-day Interstate 5; in the decade between 1900 and 1910 the population boomed growing from 1800 to 8800 people. Front cover detached covers heavily worn; older tape on spine and front cover lightly soiled. Contemporary pencil ownership notations on end leaves. Lightly toned several small edge tears heavier to last few leaves. One of the earliest cook books published in Wisconsin. This promotional cook book was issued by the Star Crystal Baking Powder Company of Milwaukee edited by the principal of the Milwaukee Cooking School and featuring a handsome color frontispiece advertising their product. The work includes an index a table of proportions and equivalents and has blank leaves provided for notes and extra recipes. Opening with bread it includes recipes for cakes puddings sauces soups salads fish a section on roasting and brazing and a pastry section which begins "Don't make it! But if it must be made this is the way to do it." A second edition was published in 1895 and is also quite rare.
