1915List2109Danville 1915. First Edition. 13 ¼ x 8 ¾ inches. Mounted to cardstock with residue and affixed articles to cardstock verso. Date stamp of “Oct 24 1915†on lower margin. Peculiar ink inscription reads “Culprints Doc Wedge and Shorty†at margin. Very Good. An early Chinese American restaurant menu from Danville Illinois. The business is listed in the 1913 International Chinese Business Directory of the World making the restaurant one of fewer than would exist when immigration laws changed in 1915 allowing restaurateurs to enter the United States on work visas. The menu features two sections “American Style†and “Chinese Style†with the latter section including dishes such as Chop Suey Chicken Sum Soo Noodles Wor Canton Style Eggs Fried Rice and a selection of teas. The existence of a separate American menu attests to the development of American Chinese food alongside American food and the degree to which restaurants offered Chinese immigrants an opportunity to operate businesses for broader American clientele. We find records of the Mandarin Cafe’s existence into the 1940s. unknown

Driberg and mother of Labour politician Tom Driberg Baron Bradwell 1905-76 in connection with her efforts on behalf of allied prisoners of war. An interesting and informative collection casting light on a generally-overlooked aspect of the Great War. ONE. Notebook in the autograph of Mrs A. M. Driberg Uckfield Lodge Crowborough Sussex.80pp. 12mo. Stitched in original black cloth covers. Filled with lists of batches of items posted by Mrs Driberg to various allied prisoners of war between June 1915 and February 1916. Names include ‘Private Wilson’ ‘Leon Beldé’ ‘Private Timothy O’Brien’ ‘Rifleman Jones’ and ‘J. Richardson’. The first entry is representative: ‘Parcel to Jones Contents 2 cakes chocolate 1 E. Rock 1 Shortbread 1 Soap ¼ lb. baccy sic 1 pipe 1 water brush 1 writing case 1 socks 1 shirt 1 Handks. Postage 1/7 Posted 11/6/15’. Colour-decorated limp covers striking Art Deco cover art lettering in red white blue & silver on English racing green field wire spiral binding as issued NF copy. First edition of this scarce promotional catalogue touting the storied English Racing Automobiles Ltd. E.R.A. founded in Nov. 1933 and manufactured 18 single seater racing cars capable of competing against most major race car manufacturers in motorsports at the time. The E.R.A.’s used 1.1 liter 1.5 liter and 2 liter supercharged engines competing in the Voiturette classes and were particularly designed for hill climbs and won many “Small Car†races. Of the original 18 ever built 17 still survive today although many have been heavily modified and experienced changes to blowers suspension brakes and styling to remain on the cutting edge. Their efforts were rewarded in 1935 by placing 1st 3rd 4th & 5th at the prestigious Nurburgring “Voiturette†class race in 1935. No original copies in Worldcat. Library bookplates in front cover of each volume oval library stamps on verso of folding frontis map title page and p. 3 of vol. I on title page and p. 1 of vol. II on title page and p. 7 of vol. III. Small chip to bottom edge of one plate in Vol. II not affecting image closed tear to large folding map in vol. III. A few minor dampstains to top edge some light offsetting from plates. General wear to covers and corners. Overall a very good set internally quite bright and crisp.</p><p>Second edition published the same year as the first. Considered the best edition by Hill. Includes the chart of the Straight of Magellan that the first edition does not. Also includes a preface to the second edition containing a reply from Hawkesworth to a letter from Mr. Dalrymple about some groundless imputations in his account of the late voyages to the South Seas. The official account of the first voyage of the not-yet-famous Cook as prepared by Hawkesworth upon commission of the British Admirality. The voyage was primarily scientific in nature intending to sail to Tahiti to observe the transit of Venus calculate the distance of the earth from the sun and to continue the geographical discovery begun by Byron. After leaving Tahiti Cook discovered named and charted the Society Islands then continued on to New Zealand and Australia. This is the first printing first state of the famous account of what is now described as 'Cook's First Voyage' although primary credit for the creation of this account is given to John Hawkesworth who had been commissioned by the Admiralty to edit Capt. Cook's papers. Volume I of our offering ends at page 676 and shows page 139 as numbered 139-360 as called for in Beddie 648. It contains 18 of the 21 charts and plates called for in this volume lacking two charts and one plate. Volume II has a tide mark across the top of the first thirdof the text block. Page 189 is misnumbered 191. Old worm hole to margins of pages 119-161. Contains 16 of 22 charts and plates five folding charts seven folding plates and four single page plates. The text is complete in 410 numbered pages. Volume III text commences at page 411 and concludes at page 795. All nine plates and charts are present including the very large folding chart of New Zealand Cook was the first to confirm that New Zealand was in fact an island. Lack of nine plates/ charts. The text shows foxing severe on a few pages but on the whole the text is perfectly readable and if professionally restored the plates and charts would be magnificent. This book is dedicated to her husband mentioning his support in the present tense which suggests that it was published before his 1901 death. This collection of essays addresses such topics as the "ideal woman" moral issues in marriage free love and other topics of particular relevance to women. Public appetite for a detailed narrative encouraged a publishing race of which this work published less than three months after the expedition's return to England and almost two years prior to Hawkesworth's authorised version was the winner. This first issue containing the dedication leaf was swiftly withdrawn following the publicly advertised consternation of the dedicatees the Admiralty Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander. Published anonymously the work is generally attributed to James Magra an American mid-shipman aboard. The work is a short but interesting narrative of Cook's first voyage which relates his visits to Tahiti New Zealand Australia New Guinea Batavia and Rio de Janeiro. The author is noteworthy because he is one of the few to criticize Cook in any meaningful way. Despite problems with the accuracy of the text this work will always hold the place of being the first account of that voyage and the first account in print of the Australian coast. in translation it also gave the French their first account of that voyage. <br/> <br/> T. Small corner replaced lower left barely affecting the plate mark a tiny nick in the upper margin outside of the plate mark. Overall a very good copy.
