Quarto lettered green wrappers pp. 16 black and white plate light foxing and handling marks a very good copy. The original catalogue of the extraordinarily important manuscripts relating to Captain Cook sold at Sotheby's in 1923. 'HENRY WILLIAM FERDINAND BOLCKOW 1806–1878 was born in Mecklenburg in Prussia now northern Germany but migrated to England in 1827. In 1841 he established the first iron foundry and rolling works in Middlesbrough UK in partnership with John Vaughan. Between 1827 and 1868 the population of Middlesbrough grew from less than 100 to more than 40000 and when the town was gazetted as a municipality in 1853 Bolckow was elected its first mayor. In 1868 he was elected a Member of Parliament. His Yorkshire residence and property Marton Hall incorporated the birthplace of James Cook. Living on the site of Cook’s birthplace inspired Bolckow – already a serious art collector – to assemble one of the world’s finest Cook collections. In 1868 he purchased Cook’s original manuscript journal of the Endeavour voyage as well as the Admiralty’s secret instructions. In that same year several works of art from his collection were displayed at the National Exhibition of Works of Art Leeds including a portrait of James Cook by John Webber now held by the National Portrait Gallery Canberra. In 1923 a small number of Cook-related objects from H W F Bolckow’s collection were sold by Sotheby Wilkinson and Hodge. Cook’s Endeavour journal and letter book with the Admiralty’s secret instructions were bought by the Australian government. Now designated Manuscripts 1 and 2 MS 1 MS 2 the journal and letter book are regarded as foundation documents of the National Library of Australia. Illustrated with four engraved plates with tissue-guards beautifully hand-coloured by Lazaretti. 394pp. A very good copy the binding square and firm with some loss to the spine label rubbing to the spine and joints and wear to the corners. The contents with an old water mark to the top margin of the first 60 pages or so a few small stains to the edges of pp.261-268 and some light scattered foxing are otherwise in very good order. The plates themselves are clean and bright the colours remaining vivid. The fifth volume from this wonderfully illustrated Italian edition of Cook's voyages published between 1816 and 1817 which ultimately comprised seven volumes. The title translates as "Cook's Navigations on the Great Ocean and Around the Globe to serve as an introduction to the collection of the most interesting voyages undertaken after that famous Navigator in various parts of the world". Cook's death reached England via Büsching's Wöchentlichte Nachrichten Berlin 1780. The news had arrived in Europe via despatches sent by Clerke and King from Kamchatka and word quickly spread to England of the events at Kealakekua Bay. The medal was produced in this period before the Resolution and Adventure returned to England in September 1780. This makes the medal one of the earliest artefacts associated with Cook's death. Light foxing to first few leaves including frontis portrait and title small library stamp on title else a fine clean and crisp copy.</p><p>First edition of the first full-scale English biography of Captain Cook compiled from Admirality sources as well as documents that were in the possession of Sir Joseph Banks. This work was intended to give a well-balanced account of Cook's life from birth to death including his family and early years and the capacities in which he was engaged prior to the famous voyage. Cook discharged several important duties while aboard the <em>Mercury</em> on the St. Lawrence River during the siege of Quebec. The Newfoundland and Labrador surveys are discussed and the three voyages are dealt with in great narrative depth. Kippis includes most of Samwell's narrative of Cook's death at Kealakekue pp. 454-474 and gives accounts of various tributes to Cook memory. Gonzalez 1855. 8vo. With 4 full-page wood-engraved plates. Surprisingly rare Spanish account of Cook's first voyage preceded by a short account of his life extracted from Kippis. Spanish editions of Cook's voyages are remarkably few. Kippis's biography had already been translated in the 18th century but Marta Torres Santo Domingo found only three Spanish publications in the 19th century relating to Cook. The present work was planned to cover all Cook's voyages the drop-title on page XIII reading "Relacion de los tres viajes. Primer viaje." but apparently this was never realised. Oddly the illustration on the front wrapper seems to depict South American vaqueros hardly relevant to James Cook. The plates include portraits of Cook and Tupaia.The original publishers back wrapper bound in at the end contains an advertisement for the book.The original front wrapper is not preserved. With some very minor water stains but overall in very good condition. A scarce Spanish edition of Cooks first voyage.l Beddie 155; WorldCat 3 copies; cf. Extremely rare German account of Captain Cooks death published in Tallinn in Estonia "undoubtedly the first account of Cook's death to be published in book form" Beddie together with a letter concerning the 1775 Spanish voyage to the west coast of North America by Bodega y Quadra 1744-1794 also in German with many references to Cook. The first work opens with a short poem on the death of the English navigator and hydrographer James Cook 1728-1779 who died during a scuffle with the Hawaiian natives on 14 February 1779 after his relations with them had deteriorated. It is followed by a foreword and "a short account of Cook's life his voyages and his death with many inaccuracies on his early career" Beddie also in German. Much of the information in this small booklet comes from a letter Auszug des Briefes von Kensington den 4ten Febr. 1780 die Nachrichten von Kapitain Cook betressend.This letter "includes paraphrases of passages in Captain Charles Clerke's letter to the Admirality written at Kamchatka on June 8 1779 announcing the death of Cook at Hawaii" Forbes. Beyond the books importance as the first published account of Cook's death it also includes many passing references to the Hawaiian Islands. It ends with a laudatory poem on Cook's death "An elegy on the death of the late Captain Cook" followed by a German translation.In addition to the present edition in the original German Albrecht published a French translation more or less simultaneously: Précis de la vie & des voyages du Capitaine Cook. Écrit de Kensington ce 4 février 1780. The author of this account of Cook's death is uncertain though it has been attributed to Georg Forster 1754-1794 or Johann Reinhold Forster 1729-1798 German natural scientists who accompanied Cook on his second voyage.The second work in this volume by the same publisher in matching format in the same year is a letter concerning the 1775 voyage to the west coast of North America by the Spanish voyager Juan Francisco de la Bodega y Quadra. It contains many references to the voyages of Cook and is even rarer than the Nachrichten. Both works on Cook and the Pacific are rare the Briefe with only 1 copy in WorldCat even rarer than the Nachrichten. We have found only one other copy of either in auction record in fact the two works bound together.Binding slightly rubbed especially around the spine and along the extremities. The separately published image by Webber of one of the iconic images of the 18th century. Cook already a successful navigator was immortalized after his death at the hands of Hawaiian natives at Karakakoa Bay. Cook had spent two months on the Big Island in 1779 and was well received the natives believing he was a god. When he was forced to return due to a damaged mast he was viewed as a mortal who had already sorely stretched the supplies of the Hawaiians. It is also thought that his handling of the natives was uncharacteristically brusque leading to conjecture that this consummate traveler's judgment was somehow impaired. Copper engraving published as the Act Directs 1st Jan. 1784 by J. Webber No. 312 Oxford Street and W. Byrne No. 19 Titchfield Street London. 22 3/4 x 18 1/4" image size. A very crisp impression on laid watermarked paper. With the impression mark. A very nice bright clean copy of an important separately published engraving.
