163029102London: Printed by J. B. for James Boler 1630 1630. First edition. ESTC S117734; STC 23725; Pforzheimer 1006. A lightly washed copy with the following repairs: engraved title-page and one leaf Mmm5 pages 139-40 skillfully remargined with slight loss of a few letters on the final two lines on page 140; fore-edges occasionally trimmed close without loss; binding a little rubbed at the hinges and edges; remains of a bookseller's description on the front free endpaper; overall a fine copy. Folio late 19th century full olive morocco by Riviere gilt rules decorations spine lettering and gilt ornamental wreath on the boards a.e.g. Engraved title-page by Thomas Cockson and numerous woodcuts in the text. The collected works of a colorful member of the London literary scene in the late 16th and early 17th centuries - not a major figure but an extraordinary one. John Taylor 1578-1653 moved in the circles of Ben Jonson John Fletcher Thomas Coryate George Wither Thomas Dekker and Samuel Daniel among others. His background was modest and by trade he was a waterman on the Thames ferrying passengers across the river from the city to the Bankside but he was also a poet satirist pamphleteer self-promoter adventurer and traveller. He published over 150 titles usually in the ephemeral format of a broadside or pamphlet in prose and verse and on an array of subjects: comic narratives about London characters rhyming squibs on the travails of everyday life mock eulogies panegyrics upon himself anagrams sonnets narratives of real and imaginary travels invectives at rival poets and writers politics and low-life etc. In 1630 Taylor proudly arranged to have his works collected in the handsome folio format that previously had been used only for three other English authors - Daniel Jonson and Shakespeare - thus placing himself in select company. Whether or not All the Workes collected all of Taylor's works to 1630 is in question and he continued to publish almost until his death in 1653 little of which has been collected in any format. All the Workes itself was not reprinted until almost 250 years after this first edition. Robert Southey in his Lives of Uneducated Poets London 1836 wrote that the first poet to overcome the unfavorable obstacles of a poor education and humble beginnings "was John Taylor the Water-Poet a man who has long been more known by name than by his writings." ¶ Copies of Taylor's All the Workes are difficult to find in the marketplace in an unsophisticated state and this copy bears some evidence of repairs. See below. But it is also has very good provenance. On the front paste-down is the bookplate of collector Kenneth Rapoport with his catalogue slip laid in which states "Purchased from Seven Gables 9/22/77 @ $1040." A note on the verso updates it value as of 2004 to "$3-4000.". London: Printed by J. B. for James Boler, 1630 unknown
164921035Antwerp : Unknown 1649. Framed. Very Good. Based on a Teniers painting this is the original 1649 etching by Wenceslaus Hollar. One could suspect slight trimming of the margin but we will note that our measurements are the same as those of the Metropolitan Museum's copy. The print is floating on the backing and thus the entirety of the print revealed and attractively surrounded by tasteful matting and an appropriate complimentary gilt frame. Publisher unknown although it is quite possible Hollar was his own publisher. We think it likeliest that the print was done in Antwerp where the Flemish-born Hollar retreated in in 1646 from England because of the turmoil caused by the English Civil War. The print is 25 by 34.5 cm. With frame and matting 40 by 50 cm. We believe that the original etching meaning one printed in 1649 is quite scarce. Besides the Metropolitan Museum the only other copy of which we are aware is in the Royal Collection. The very narrow margin of the print has dusty soiling. There is a conspicuous closed tear running down the top center about 3 cm into the picture but luckily a less important area of the illustration. The tear is repaired or so we believe but it is undeniably visible. The gilded frame and matting are very attractive. Unknown unknown

1685141941685. Mallet Allain Manesson. Nouveau Continent Avec Plusiers Isles et Mers 1685 documents seventeenth-century European geographic knowledge of the Americas including the widely circulated misconception of California as an island. Produced within the context of expanding French engagement with global exploration and imperial geography the map records how information from Spanish voyages missionary reports and speculative cartographic traditions circulated across Europe. The depiction of "Californie Isle" reflects a persistent geographic error that shaped European understanding of North America well into the eighteenth century while inscriptions such as "Terres Incognues" mark the limits of mapped knowledge. The engraving supports research into early modern cartography colonial knowledge production and the transmission of geographic information during the age of exploration.<br /> <br /> Mallet Allain Manesson. Description de L'Univers. Paris: Denys Thierry 1685. Copper engraving identified as Figure 86 later hand-colored. Map measures approximately 4.5" x 6.5" presented in a mat measuring 8.5" x 11". The composition depicts North and South America with labeled regions including "Amerique" "N. Mexique Septentrionale" "Californie Isle" "Mer de Californie" "Magellanique" "Terres Arctiques" "Terres Australes" and "Terres Incognues." A small engraved ship appears in the Pacific Ocean reinforcing the maritime orientation of early modern geographic representation. The map's decorative and schematic elements align with Mallet's broader project of synthesizing global geographic knowledge for a European readership.<br /> <br /> Issued during a period when European cartographers attempted to reconcile exploration accounts with inherited classical geography the map demonstrates how conjecture and observation coexisted within printed atlases. Mallet's work contributed to the dissemination of geographic ideas among educated audiences in France and beyond shaping perceptions of the Americas as both mapped and unknown territories. The persistence of the California-as-island depiction underscores the slow correction of geographic error despite ongoing exploration making the map a useful document for studying the evolution of cartographic knowledge. Light scuffing to mat; engraving clean and well-preserved; overall in very good condition. unknown

167312722Bologna Guiseppe Longihi Pietro Todeschi 1673. Nova et accurata totius Americae tabula auct. G. I. Blaeu America quarta pars orbis quam plerunq nuvum orbem apellitant primo detecta est anno 1492 a Christophoro Columbo . A hand-coloured engraved wall map printed on 4 joined sheets. Size: 86 x 110 cm. / 33.9 x 433 inch. Large very rare hand coloured copy of Willem Blaeu's famous wall map of the Americas which is considered ""one of the most influential maps of America ever made"" Burden. The map is based on the latest explorations and shows everything known at the time about the American continent as well as the north and south poles which are included on two inset maps. As the wall map was in great demand but expensive and difficult to transport it was also printed by various French and Italian publishers for the local market. Like Blaeu's edition the French and Italian editions are very scarce as it is highly unusual for wall maps from this period to survive. We have only been able to trace 4 other copies of the present edition in sales records of the past hundred years of which only 1 is also hand coloured. Willem Janszoon Blaeu 1571-1638 first published the wall map in 1608 together with similar maps of Asia Africa and Europe. He spared no expenses for this project and hired Hessel Gerritsz 1580-1632 a great cartographer in his own right to both design the maps and research the latest sources exhaustively to create the most accurate depiction of the continents possible. Although the Americas were drawn too wide due to the inadequate methods of determining longitude at the time the shapes and most of the coastline are already very well defined. Central and South America were drawn according to Portuguese and Spanish sources and ""Nova Scotia"" on the Atlantic coast was based on the voyages of Samuel de Champlain and Pierre Gua de Monts from 1604. After the first edition in 1608 the four continents were subsequently published in 1612 and in 1624 they were reissued by Hendrik Hondius and in 1655 by Nicholas Visscher. The third state included changes to the Strait of Magellan based on Le Maire's findings from his expedition in 1615-1617. The map has been beautifully decorated with cartouches and small engravings. The cartouche in the lower right tells how the New World was discovered and is flanked by the figures of Christopher Columbus and Amerigo Vespucci. Below are four roundels containing the portraits of the four circumnavigators: Ferdinand Magellan Sir Francis Drake Sir Thomas Cavendish and Olivier Van Noort. The Atlantic features a beautiful depiction of King Philip III of Spain riding a sea chariot supposedly on a figurative visit to his New World possessions and in the Pacific Poseidon with his wife Amphitrite and son Triton can be found amidst battle ships and sea monsters. Elephants rhinoceroses camels and ostriches roam the continent. Some copies of the present map include a decorative border with illustrations of native people and sometimes also a textual border with descriptions which are not present here. It appears that these borders were engraved on separate copper plates and were not always included. Blaeu's wall maps were first printed in Italy in 1646 probably by Stefano Mozzi Scolari 1598-1650 in Venice which were based on the third state from 1624. The present copy was engraved by Pietro Todeschi dates unknown around 1670 and published in Bologna in 1673 probably by Giuseppe Longhi who had worked on similar projects with Todeschi before. It closely resembles the Venetian edition which was most likely used as the model. Todeschi's edition is however clearly recognizable because of the misspelling of Mar del Norte as Mar del Noi and the fact that California has been drawn as an island. It is the only edition known to do so. The map has been reinforced on the back and is somewhat browned and stained; the surface has faded the work has been professionally restored: the colouring has been retouched some of the losses have been filled in. 1670149562London 1670 i.e. 1671. Rare second edition of one of the most persuasive defences of liberty and “the free and uninterrupted exercise of our consciences"William Penn. Quarto bound in full modern morocco gilt titles and ruling to the spine inner dentelles elaborately stamped in blind. A powerful argument for toleration and against the intrusion of civil authority into religious matters this second edition was revised and enlarged from the first edition during Penn's imprisonment at Newgate in 1670 a defining episode in his lifelong defense of religious liberty. This is evidently a 2nd edition being much enlarged from the 1st which may be seen on comparison; and "J." for Junior is here omitted in the Title page and also the Dedication to the King which the first contains -- and an address "to the Supream Authority of England" dated "Newgate the 7th of the 12th monteth called February 1670." -- and a Preface added; also new matter in the work" Smith Friends' Books II p.286-7. In very good condition. Bookplate of William Tarun Fehsenfeld to the pastedown. The Great Case of Liberty of Conscience Once More Briefly Debated & Defended by the Authority of Reason Scripture and Antiquity constitutes one of William Penn’s earliest and most systematic expositions of the principle of religious toleration. This second edition revised and enlarged during his imprisonment in Newgate Prison in 1670 following his arrest for preaching at an unlawful Quaker meeting develops and refines arguments first articulated in the initial printing. Drawing on reason Scripture and early Christian authority Penn maintains that civil government possesses no jurisdiction over matters of faith and that coercion in religion violates both divine and natural law. Produced during a formative period of persecution the text articulates a mature defense of liberty of conscience that would later inform Penn’s political philosophy and the legal and religious framework of his American colony. unknown
