ESTC T37242. Illustrated by facsimiles of the genuine handwriting of the Nobleman and of her Majesty; a new Facsimile of the handwriting of Shakespeare never before exhibited; and other authentick Documents: In a Letter addressed to the Right Hon. James Earl of Charlemont. Illustrated with three folding plates of facsimiles. ESTC T37242. Inscribed by Malone "To / the Rev. Mr. Ayscough / from the Author" on page opposite titlepage handwriting consistent with that in Malone's manuscript correspondence. Born into a prominent family Rev. Samuel Ayscough 1745-1804 developed an early passion for literature. He initially worked as a bookseller and then became a librarian at the British Museum. Through his position as a librarian that he launched his literary career in 1782 publishing "A Catalogue of the MSS Preserved in the British Museum." The following year he published "Letters of an American Farmer" and "A General Index to the Annual Register." In 1786 he became an editor of both the "Gentleman's Magazine" and the "Monthly Review." In 1790 he published "Index on Shakespeare" which established his reputation as a writer and significantly contributed to his rise to fame. Until Ayscough brought out his Index there had been no concordance to Shakespeare. Edmond Malone was undoubtedly quite familiar with Ayscough's work which would have been useful in his own researches -- an interesting association copy. Also bears the heraldic bookplate of "Sir George Chetwynd 1st Baronet" with the motto "Quod Deus Vult Fiet" What God Wills be Done. The Chetwynd Baronetcy of Brocton Hall in the County of Stafford is a title in the Baronetage of Great Britain. It was created on 1 May 1795 for Sir George Chetwynd 1739 - 1824 of Brocton Hall Staffordshire for many years Clerk to the Privy Council. The first Baronet inherited an estate at Old Grendon North Warwickshire in 1798 and Grendon Hall demolished 1935 became the family seat. "A comprehensive and sensational exposure of the Shakespeare forgeries by William Henry Ireland" DNB. Ireland claimed to have unearthed a number of documents by written by Shakespeare among which was a previously "unknown" play titled 'Vortigern and Rowena.' The play's first performance was on 2 April 1796 when it was ridiculed by the audience. Ireland also revealed purported correspondence between Shakespeare and a printer explaining why the play was unpublished as well as a deed accounting for how it came to be in hands of the Irelands. According to the deed Shakespeare had willed all the manuscripts to an ancestor of the Irelands also named William Henry Ireland who had saved him from drowning. Years later Ireland explained that he came up with this story to establish his right to the manuscripts in case a descendant of the bard might claim them. Irish Shakespearean scholar Edmond Malone published An Inquiry into the Authenticity of Certain Miscellaneous Papers and Legal Instruments on 21 March 1796 about the authenticity of Vortigern and the other documents "discovered" by Ireland. Some early critics accused William Henry Ireland's father Samuel of the forgery though William assumed responsibility in two printed confessions. Samuel himself continued to regard the play as authentic and edited it in 1799 including a foreword in which he attacked Malone's findings and denounced the "illiberal and injurious treatment" he had received. Nevertheless neither Ireland's reputation recovered from the fiasco and William eventually moved to France where he lived for several decades. Edmond Malone 1741 – 1812 was an Irish barrister Shakespearean scholar and considered the finest editor of the works of William Shakespeare. In 1774 Malone was able to give up his law practice for at first political and then more congenial literary pursuits. He went to London where he frequented literary and artistic circles including "The Club." He regularly visited Samuel Johnson and was of great assistance to James Boswell in revising and proofreading his Life four of the later editions of which he annotated. He was friendly with Sir Joshua Reynolds and sat for a portrait now in the National Portrait Gallery.; Signed by Author . T. Cadell, Jun. and W. Davies hardcover

1715WRCAM39768London 1715. Small folio broadsheet. 1p. plus printed docket title on verso. Ornamental initial. Dbd. Early folds and early stab holes in left margin. Mild foxing. Very good. A petition to Parliament by the officers of Lieut. Gen. George Hamilton's Regiment of Foot seeking pay due for services abroad in the War of Spanish Succession. Lord George Douglas-Hamilton 1666-1737 was a Scottish Williamite officer during the Glorious Revolution who later married William III's mistress Elizabeth Villiers became a confidant of William was created Earl of Orkney in 1696 was appointed Governor of Virginia in 1714 and in 1736 was the first British general promoted to the rank of Field Marshal. In 1701 at the beginning of the War of the Spanish Succession Hamilton led the First Regiment of Foot the Royal Scots to the Netherlands where the regiment fought for the remainder of the war. Despite their long service and the high position of Hamilton the officers suggest in the present petition that having been so long overseas they had been forgotten by the British government and charge that they had not received their pay even after frequent petitions. The document is an early example of lobbying literature which first began proliferating in the lobby of the House of Commons at the time of the accession of King George I and the British general election of 1715.
