Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Modern cloth bdg. Small 4to. (26 x 19 cm). In Ottoman script (Old Turkish with Arabic letters). 24 p. First edition of this epic and historically important account, describing the siege and fall of the Byzantine Empire and Constantinople by Ottoman Sultan Mehmet II in 1453. This is one of the finest literary examples of sixteenth-century Ottoman prose. "This description of the conquest of Istanbul in 1453 is mentioned only by Ismail Pasha in his "Hediyyetü'l Arifîn". The text, which was published as a supplement to TOEM (parts 20 and 21, Istanbul 1331) is said to be taken from a manuscript owned by Halis Efendi. The introduction to Ca'fer Çelebi's life was also written by Halis Efendi. The work is written in a very elegant style, with ayets, hadith, and beyts in Arabic, Persian, and Turkish scattered throughout the text and may be considered one of the finest examples of sixteenth-century Ottoman prose writing. [.] Ca'fer's work is in some aspects a reliable source for the conquest of Istanbul. The preparation for the siege is given in this work. The council of war which was held before the siege and in particular Mehmed II's speech to the council is very detailed and the chain placed across the entrance to the Golden Horn and its history is very well described in this work as well. During the siege, the Byzantines received help from the outside. Ca'fer is specific about this and states that "four huge vessels full of provisions, soldiers and ammunition came to help of the Byzantines". After the last attack, Constantinople fell into the hands of the Ottoman army. The date given for this is 857 Cem. I. 20 Seshenbe in Ca'fer's work. The plundering and looting which occurred during the first three days of the conquest are vividly described by Ca'fer Çelebi, but the withdrawal of Justinian and his men which preceded the conquest and the death of the Byzantine Emperor during the capture of the city are omitted in this work. Ca'fer's closing lines are devoted to the conversion of St. Sophia (Ayasofya) into a mosque by Mehmed II. Ca'fer Çelebi used eyewitness accounts as well as written works. It is certain that he did not rely exclusively on any source which is not extant, for the departs from Ruhi, Enverî, Tursun Beg, Neshrî, and Asikpasha-zâde either by adding new information or giving a conflicting account." (Erünsal). Özege 11953; TBTK 7066.

334 pages including index. "The thrust of this challenging book is that America is the first society to move beyond the industrial age into the new "technetronic" era, and that this transition affects directly both our international and our domestic problems. Part 1 describes the impact of the scientific revolution on world affairs in general and on the Third World in particular, and exposes the ambiguous position of its principal disseminators, the US. Part 2 examines how this has effected the content, style, and format of man's political outlook on his global reality. Part 3 assesses the contemporary relevance of communism to the problems of modernity. Part 4 focuses upon the US, a society that is both a social pioneer and a guinea pig for mankind, and examines the crisis of American institutions and values during the current transition - as well as the challenge posed by the New Left. Part 5 outlines in broad terms the general direction the US might take in order to make an effective response to its foreign and domestic dilemmas." - from dust jacket (not included). "This is one of the most original books on political and social thought to appear in recent years. The author projects the impact of technology and electronics on the political and social values of the United States, the Soviet Union and other 'post-industrial' states. As a study of global society in transition, this seminal work is bound to elicit major controversy and will be difficult to ignore." - Foreign Affairs. 194 + xiv pages. Index. "This book tells the story of who caused the slump (Great Depression) and how they caused it, and it directs attention to two simple steps that can be taken to save our farmers and traders... The depression from which we now suffer is due to an artificially induced variation in the purchasing power of money. In these pages will be found ample evidence in support of this statement. "During the last generation, American readers of German appear to have relied, as a rule, for information about early phases of German economic thought, chiefly upon two writers, Kautz ("Die Geschichtliche Entwickelung der National-Oekonomik und ihrer Literatur") and Roscher. Of Kautz, it is enough to say that he was of the rear guard of the rhetoricians. His book is wonderfully plausible, if not lucid, reading. Its early pages appear to express methodological conclusions which the maturest scholarship has not superseded." - Albion W. Small, "The Cameralists: The Pioneers of German Social Polity" (1909). Very Good French Original autograph letter signed 'Hamdoullah Soubhi', to Rechid Safvet Atabinen, who was a counselor of Geneve International Economy Conference in 1919. 20x16 cm. Completely in French. 3 p. Subhi writes that he welcomes the dispatch from Constantinople, where he does not feel very well, to Geneva, where he feels young. He tells that Rifat Pasha (Turkish ambassador in Geneve) and he was late for that he delivered his 'biography' and 'portrait'. He mentions the meeting (probably, The Geneve International Economy Conference). Then he uses an interesting style by writing "It is not our duty to thank Rechid Safvet Bey, on behalf of those supporting us here, and to have defended the Turkish Cause with this documentation which follows...". He goes on as 'So much the news published in the Italian, French, English and German newspapers about our country is translated' and 'Also, having made a nine conference on the event that took place in Germany'... Foxing on paper slightly chipped on margins. Folded. Hamdullah Suphi Tanriöver was a highly influential Turkish poet, intellectual, diplomat, and politician. He adopted his surname Tanriöver after the Turkish Surname Law was enacted in 1934. He was born to Abdüllatif Suphi Pasha, an Ottoman statesman in Constantinople in 1885. He studied at Galatasaray High School graduating in 1904. He later served as a translator, and a teacher for Turkish after earning a certificate. In Darülfünün, later renamed to Istanbul University, he was appointed professor of Islamic art. During the Turkish Republic era, he was elected to the parliament, and also served as a government minister. He married to Ayse Saide, who, according to some sources, was a descendant of two former Anatolian beys (Isfendiyarids and Ramazanids). During his childhood, his father's mansion was a meeting point of famous poets, and he was influenced by the poet community during his early years. He published his first poems in a literary newspaper published by his uncle in Paris, France. He began writing in Genç Kalemler (literally: "The Young Pens"), a literary periodical. He also distinguished himself as an orator. He took part in a committee, which was tasked to reflect the ordeal of the Turkish population in the Balkans after the Balkan Wars (1912-1913). During the Turkish War of Independence (1919-1923), he took side with Mustafa Kemal Pasha (Atatürk), and became a member of the 1st Parliament of Turkey. He was appointed Director of the Press and Information. Then, he served as the Minister of Education from 13 December 1920 to 20 November 1921 in the 1st, 2nd, and the 3rd cabinet of the Executive Ministers of Turkey. After the proclamation of the Republic, he served again as the Minister of National Education in the 4th government of Turkey between 3 March 1925 and 21 December 1925. In 1931, he was appointed Ambassador of Turkey to Romania in Bucharest. In 1943, he entered the parliament from the Republican People's Party. In 1950, he joined the newly founded Democrat Party. Several years later, however, following the struggle for the "Right to Prove" in the press, he co-founded the Liberty Party. He lost his seat when his political party was defeated in the 1957 general election. Resit Saffet [Safvet as well] Atabinen, (1884-1965), Turkish historian, diplomat, and member of parliament.
Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Contemporary fine dark green cloth bdg. Art-nouveau decorations embossed on boards. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In Ottoman script. 734, [2], [1] p., index. The Scopes trial (1925) fuelled discussion in the United States on the social and political implications of Darwinism. For the defenders of the 1925 Tennessee law - which prohibited the teaching of Darwinism in schools - Darwinism was, amongst other things, responsible for the German militarism which eventually led to the First World War. This view was supported by Ismail Fennî, a late Ottoman intellectual, who authored this book immediately after the trial which aimed to debunk scientific materialism. In it, he claimed that Darwinism blurred the distinction between man and beast and thus destroyed the foundations of morality. However, despite his anti-Darwinist stance, Ismail Fennî argued against laws forbidding the teaching of Darwinism in schools and emphasized that even false theories contributed to the scientific improvement. Indeed, because of his belief in science, he claimed that Muslims should not reject Darwinism if it were supported by future scientific evidence. It is composed of 7+1 chapters to criticize the materialist and positivist philosophical movements and especially the work of the positivist German philosopher Ludwig Bücher 'Kraft und Stoff'. The first part of the book focuses on the evidence presented of the proof of god in the Western and Islamic philosophies. In the second chapter, the issue of immortality of soul and spirit is addressed. In the third chapter, 'the wahdat al-wujud' (vahdet-i vücûd) current is examined. The fourth chapter, examined some famous scholars' thoughts about the matter, materialism, laws of nature, etc. In the fifth chapter, the work of the positivist German philosopher Büchner 'Kraft und Stoff', in the sixth chapter, monism (monism), in the seventh ch. positivism is criticized. In the last ch., there are descriptions and some thoughts on the theory of evolution and the Indian fakirs (fakers). Ismail Fenni Ertugrul was a Turkish mystic, philosopher, writer, musician, lyricist, and composer. He studied traditional madrasah education and learned Arabic and Persian. He was in various state posts. After the retirement, he began to be interested in poetry, music, and philosophy. Before his death, he donated his library including 9050 books to the Library of Beyazit. (Source: An Ottoman response to Darwinism: Ismail Fennî on Islam and evolution, Bilgili).
