He bequeathed some influential works on fortification, the mot known perhaps is "De la défense des places fortes" (Paris, 1810) which went through four editions and was also translated into English. The Encyclopaedia Britannica (11th edition, 1910) has described his "Mémoire sur la fortification primitive" as "One of the more important works on the subject of fortification and siege war", and the book has been listed as such together with the works of the great fortification theoreticians Dürer, de Ville, Coehoorn, Vauban, Noizet, as well as the later writers Plessix and Legrand, Ritter von Brunner, and Delambre. English version, "The Natural Economic Order" translated from the 6th German edition by Philip Pye, appeared in 1929. Silvio Gesell (1862-1930), German businessman. Born in Belgium, Gesell emigrated to Buenos Aires, where he successfully engaged in business. In 1914 he returned to Germany and became, five years later, finance minister in the short-lived government of Bavaria. His ideas in "Die natürliche Wirtschaftsordnung" are a reaction against Marxian socialism. Keynes, in his "General Theory", gives much space to the book, and expresses his belief that the future would learn more from the spirit of Gesell than from that of Marx. (Mai, P. 95).

Small octavo. Pp. 54. Plus 34 halftone photographic plates, printed on different paper, bound in. Original pictorial grey card wrappers, bit rubbed, corner creased, upper wrapper with tape repair for short tear. Else, a fine copy. ~ A fascinating small book, written and photographed by the Senior Chaplain to the Forces, Egyptian Expeditionary Force, with the intention to provide His Majesty's soldiers with a handy book of reference to Palestine and the Holy Land. The book contains a relatively large number of plates, depicting ancient and new towns and villages, holy shrines, landscapes, historical monuments and sites, and some inhabitants. Most fascinating are the images of pure military interest: a derelict tank; a cannon named "Jericho Jane"; and a mobile gun, nicknamed the "Finish Turk". Reverend Payne's text is a wonderful combination of historical background, actual information, traveller's notations, and Biblical contemplations. He previously wrote "Jerusalem, the City of the Great King" which was meant to serve as a guide book to Jerusalem. Both these books were sold in army canteen huts. In his Foreword, Philip W. Chetwode, Late Commanding 20th Army Corps, Palestine, writes: "I feel sure that all soldiers who find themselves, now or in the future, serving in Palestine, will be grateful to him for having provided them with such a useful book which cannot fail to add to the interest of the time they spend in the Holy Land." Hardcover, contemporary quarter cloth and marbled paper over boards, paper label to spine; small chip to paper on upper board, corner of first free endpaper finger-soiled, stamp to title. In a very good condition, fine interior. ~ First edition. A very scarce original copy of Schulze-Delitzsch's attack on Lassalle's "Herr Bastiat-Schulze von Delitzsch, der ökonomische Julian, oder: Capital und Arbeit" (1864) (see here). Franz Hermann Schulze-Delitzsch (1808-1883) was a German jurist, member of the Prussian National Assembly, Chamber of Deputies, and the German Reichstag. He advocated free-trade, unrestricted competition, and self-help rather than state-help. In 1863 he wrote "Capitel zu einem deutschen Arbeiterkatechismus", borrowing his fundamental principles in the main from Bastiat. Ferdinand Lassalle (1825-1864), a German socialist, was the architect of the German labour movement and founder the German Workers' Association. He was the first to speak about "the iron law of wages", defining it as the minimum subsistence pay permitting survival and the raising of children. But the more his revolutionary hopes were disappointed, the more sharply he turned against the middle classes (and Schulze's theories), whose capacity to solve the social question he denied. "Herr Bastiat-Schulze" was his rather assailing reaction to Schulze's book. In 1866, only after Lassalle's death (he was mortally wounded in a duel fought over a lady he intended to marry), Schulze finally answered with his "Die Abschaffung". ~ Provenance: From the library of Dr. Max Menger, with his ink stamp and calligraphed name on spine label. In 1803 he was appointed President of the Board of Agriculture. He was a great authority on farming and a leading economic authority of his time. In 1792, "A brief examination of Lord Sheffield's observations on the commerce of the United States", by Tench Coxe, was published as a reaction to Holroyd's book. Scarce. Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) In contemporary cloth bdg. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In Ottoman script. 43, 59 p. Divan literature is described as "a certain tradition literature with its rules and boundaries" in the most general form. These rules and boundaries have enabled the formation of common expressions in religion and in Sufi intellection in particular and in poetry by the influence of Persian literature, and they have made it traditional in time. In this context, in classical Turkish poetry, whose male poets are predominant in quality and quantity, patriarchal rhetoric presents an outlook that its frame has been established by common tropes, metaphors, poetic themes and in short by similar imaginations and ideas. The divans of Lady Mihri (died after 1512), Lady Leyla (died in 1848) and Lady Seref (1809-1861) have different aesthetic understandings in that context. Laylâ Hanim was one of the few Turkish women poets who made a collection of her poems. Lived in Istanbul and died in 1848. Her family was close to the Ottoman Sultanate and Leylâ Hanim, witnessed the reign of Mahmud II (1808-1839) and Abdülmecid I (1839-1861). She is the daughter of Moralizâde Hâmid Efendi. Her mother Hadîce Hanim is the sister of Keçecizâde Izzet Molla, a notable bureucrat and poet of the times. She has three brothers, Atâullah Mehmed Efendi, Nurullah Mehmed Efendi and Hâlid Efendi, who died at a young age. She had financial problems after her father's death and she expressed those in her poems. Some of her poems in the divan mention that her father and brother Hâlid Efendi have lived in Bursa for a while. She is educated by Keçecizâde Izzet Molla, she is quick-witted. She experienced a short marriage, which lasted about a week; after the divorce she devoted herself to poetry. Her grave is in Galata Mevlevîhanesi. Following books include information of her life, characteristics and poetry: Fatin Tezkiresi (363), Ahmet Rif'at's Lugat-i Târîhiyye ve Cogrâfiyye (154), Tuhfe-i Nâ'ilî (895), Sicill-i Osmânî (93), Bursali Mehmet Tahir's Osmanli Müellifleri (406), Haci Begzâde Ahmet Muhtar's Sâir Hanimlarimiz (51-2), Mehmed Zihnî Efendi's Mesâhir'ün-Nisâ (195), and Semseddin Sâmî's Kâmusü'l-A'lâm (4060). These resources indicate that Leylâ Hanim is from a noble family and the links of the family to the high cadres of Ottoman bureaucracy and their intellectual property have left traces in her poetry. AH 1299 = AD 1882. Fourth Edition. (Source: All poetry). OCLC 163633996.; Özege 4177 / 2. First Bulaq Edition. Litho. Rare.

Fine Turkish Contemporary homogene black clothes. 4to. (27 x 19 cm). 5 volumes, 70 fascicles: (2884 p.), many color and b/w plates and ills. Istanbul ansiklopedisi. Vol. 1-5. [First 5 volumes of 11].
4 vols., in 1, 8vo., First Editions, with frontispieces and plates; newly and handsomely bound in full navy blue crushed morocco, sides with double frame border in gilt, back gilt with five raised bands, second and fourth compartments lettered in gilt, all other compartments ruled and tooled in gilt with an anchor device, all original pictorial wrappers (a little dust-soiled) preserved, a splendid copy ideal as a gift or for presentation. The definitive record of corvette service in WWII, the set comprises 'HM Corvette' (1942), 'East Coast Corvette' (1943), 'Corvette Command' (1944) and 'HM Frigate' (1946). The first three volumes were combined and issued in slightly abridged form as 'Three Corvettes' (1945). Taken together and in sequence the four volumes provide a near-continuous record of Monsarrat's own wartime service. Furthermore they contain much of the inspiration and context, and in several cases actual incidents which reappear in the author's masterpiece 'The Cruel Sea' (1951), arguably the finest novel of the Royal Navy in WWII. Monsarrat's seatime began in HMS Campanula [broadly the 'HMS Flower' of the first volume] on the North Atlantic convoys; at one time she was the only RN vessel operating out of St. Johns. She is perhaps best known for her service in convoy OG71 (Milford Haven-Gibraltar, August 1941) which suffered so badly at the hands of a U-boat pack that it was ordered to seek shelter in neutral Lisbon. Many of the merchantmen were lost (including the SS Aquila with 22 Wrens aboard) together with the escorts HMS Bath and HMS Zinnia. The full story is related by Lund and Ludlam in 'Nightmare Convoy' (1987). He then transferred to HMS Guillemot ['HMS Dipper' in the second volume] serving on the East Coast convoys. Among the actions portrayed are the torpedoing of HMS Vortigern by E-boat S-104, and the successful destruction of an HE-111 in August 1941. HMS Guillemot's captain, Lombard-Hobson' has said of Monsarrat 'he was reserved and unpopular, but I liked him myself'. Monsarrat then assumed command of HMS Shearwater ['HMS Winger' in the third volume] operating in the North Sea out of Harwich. Individual volumes are becoming increasingly elusive. Complete sets are seldom offered for sale, especially in this condition. Enser, p.120 (HM Corvette); Law 1008 (East Coast Corvette), 1007 (Corvette Command) and 1084 (HM Frigate). Astonishingly 'HM Corvette' is not recorded by Law.
