The catalogue is an important addition to the reference literature, supplementing Navari's Greece and the Levant: the Catalogue of the Henry Myron Blackmer Collection (London: 1989), and is particularly interesting for the number of works from celebrated libraries - including those of Britwell Court, the duc de La Rochefoucauld at Roche-Guyon, the Duke of Portland, the Duke of Marlborough, the Earls Fitzwilliam, Charles X of France, and Czar Nicholas I of Russia; a number of these are in armorial bindings, which are illustrated and referenced in a separate index of provenances, making the work a most useful resource.

Only one copy located in OCLC 1030747796 (Orient Institut in Istanbul). First Edition, thus. It's an abridged translation into Ottoman Turkish but the first illustrated edition in the Ottoman / Turkish literature. According to the preface written by a translator named Mehmed Ali, whose biographical information could not be found in the literature, it is understood that he was a primary school teacher in the Ottoman period. He stated that during his teaching period, he translated some selected books from western literature from their original languages ??and read them to his students. His students said that they liked Robinson Crusoe the most, and Mehmed Ali translated and published the entire book upon his students' request. [24], 429 p., 1 folded Armenian map of Turkey (map size: 24x33 cm), 29 unnumbered full-page b/w plates (one is folded). Armenian Golgotha is a memoir written by Grigoris Balakian about his eyewitness account of the Armenian Events. The memoir was released in two volumes. Volume 1, about his life prior to and during the Armenian Deportation, was released in 1922. Volume 2, about his life as a fugitive after the Deportation, was released in 1959. Originally published in Armenian, the memoir was later published in various languages including an English translation by Peter Balakian, Balakian's great-nephew, with Aris Sevag. Grigoris Balakian [or, Palakean, Palakian, Balakean], was a bishop of the Armenian Apostolic Church, in addition to being a survivor and memoirist of the Armenian Events in the Ottoman Empire. Grigoris Balakian was born in Tokat in the Ottoman Empire and graduated from the Sanasarian College in Erzurum. He had been studying architecture in Germany for two years and got a degree in civil engineering. He became a celibate priest ordained under the monastic name Grigoris Balakian. On 24 April 1915, he was among the group of 250 leading Armenian figures of Constantinople who were arrested and deported. One group was deported to Ayas. Balakian was deported to Çankiri, north-east of Ankara with the rest of the 190 other deportees from the capital. Only 16 of them would survive. He marched with 48 deportees from Çankiri in the direction of Deir Al-Zor in the Syrian desert. On the way, Balakian won the confidence of captain of constabulary Shukri Bey and learned about the Ottoman government's plan to exterminate the whole Armenian population. Balakian was able to flee toward Islahie. He joined a group of workers on the Bagdad-railway where Turkish deserters did forced labor alongside Armenian refugees. While Armenian workers between Marash and Bartche were being slain, Balakian fled to another construction site on the Bagdad railway. He was helped by German engineers and finally succeeded - disguised as Herr Bernstein - in escaping from Constantinople to Paris. At the 1921 trial in Berlin against Soghomon Tehlirian, the murderer of Talât Pasha, Balakian appeared as a witness for the defendant together with Johannes Lepsius. Soghomon Tehlirian was ultimately acquitted. Balakian became prelate of Manchester, London, and finally bishop of Marseille. Two churches were built under his guidance in Marseille and Nice (St. Mary, 1928) as well as a number of chapels and schools. He died in Marseille. Balakian is the granduncle of Anna Balakian, an expert on symbolism and surrealism who chaired New York University's Department of Comparative Literature, and the great-granduncle of Peter Balakian, an Armenian-American writer and winner of the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. Balakian's memoirs in Armenian Golgotha are an important eyewitness account of the Armenian Events. He describes his experiences during the deportation. Balakian was one of the few surviving leaders of the Armenian community who gave an account of the deportation. Komitas (Gomitas) Vartapet belonged to the same group of detainees as Balakian. First and only edition of this rare and early first and only separate travel account to Australia by a Turkish traveler in Turkish literature. Mehmet Osman Bey, (1878-1940?), was a son of Miralay Ahmed Bey, and the grandson of Emin Pasha who was the head doctor of Sultan Murat V. Mehmet Osman Bey, who circumnavigated the world in 1910, continued his journey across India, Sumatra, Java, Malaga, the Archipelago, Japan and China until the fourth month of the World War I. After arriving in Australia, he wrote his travel notes and later on was taken as a civilian prisoner by the British Army in Australia and was sent first to India and from there to Egypt. According to Demiray's preface, he was blind after returning to Turkey. This book includes two plates showing farmhouses in Australia. He described in his book Australia's educational, farming and medical systems as well as the topography of the land, the customs and rituals of the natives, their traditions of hunting, and the largely indigenous population in Queensland and the native camps outside Sydney. One of the purposes of publishing this book in the early Republican Turkey period was to examine the welfare level and systems in other countries in accordance with the conjuncture of the period. Halid Ziya was born in Izmir, Tire. He went to Istanbul and continued to Hendese-i Mülkiye and Engineer Mekteb-i Âlîsi for seven years. After starting with "Aydin Province Umur-i Nafia Third Class Engineering", Halid Ziya Bey, who continued to work as a deputy chief engineer on 14 March 1910, left Aydin and returned to Istanbul after continuing this duty for about six and a half months. As a teacher, he taught Accounting, Algebra, Geometry, and Topography at Halkali Ziraat Mekteb-i Âlîsi and Darussafaka. Halid Ziya Bey, who was appointed as a teacher of Hendese and Cosmography in Kabatas High School, started to practice the profession of engineering and cadastral, which was his main specialty in 1327. After the First World War, the Istanbul Government started its activities in order to capture and neutralize Halid Ziya Bey and his friends. Upon the harsh measures taken, Halid Ziya Bey had to live as a fugitive in the Hasirci Mountains of Eskisehir for a while with the armed force attached to him. Halid Ziya Bey, who was involved in the movement in Anatolia until the end of the National Liberation Struggle, returned to his engineering duty after the proclamation of the Republic and was included in the cadastral works again. In 1925, Halid Ziya Bey was appointed as the Head of the Science Committee of the new cadastre organization. He wrote 5 books on cadastre, photogrammetry, trigonometry, and cadastral tools in 1928 and 1929. In addition, as a result of personal work in 1928, the road between the provincial division of the Republic of Turkey with cities, has prepared a comprehensive map to show up in the forest and mining. Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Paperback. Small cr. 8vo. (19 x11 cm). In Ottoman script (Turkish with Arabic letters). 61, [2] p. Kisakürek was a Turkish poet, novelist, playwright, and Islamist ideologue. He is also known simply by his initials NFK. He was noticed by the French philosopher Henri Bergson, who later became his teacher. In his own words, he was born in "a huge mansion in Çemberlitas, on one of the streets descending towards Sultanahmet" in 1904. His father was Abdülbaki Fazil Bey who held several posts including deputy judge in Bursa, public prosecutor in Gebze and finally, judge in Kadiköy. His mother was an emigree from Crete. He was raised at the Çemberlitas mansion of his paternal grandfather Kisakürekzade Mehmed Hilmi Efendi of Maras; he was named after his great-grandfather Ahmed Necib, as well as his father, Fazil. He studied in many schools during his primary education, including the French School in Gedikpasa, Robert College of Istanbul, as well as the Naval School. He received religious courses from Ahmed Hamdi of Akseki and science courses from Yahya Kemal at the Naval School but he was actually influenced by Ibrahim Askî, whom he defined to have "penetrated into deep and private areas in many inner and outer sciences from literature and philosophy to mathematics and physics". Ibrahim Askî provided his first contact with Sufism even at a "plan of skin over skin". "After completing candidate and combat classes" of Naval School, Kisakürek entered the Philosophy Department of Darülfünûn and graduated from there (1921-1924). One of his closest friends in philosophy was Hasan Ali Yücel. He studied in Paris for one year with the scholarship provided by the Ministry of National Education (1924-1925), until the scholarship was canceled. Appropriating his anti-semitic ideas from Europe, Kisakürek regarded Jews as the corrupting element within Western civilization, and described them as the originator of Marxism and capitalism. He held them responsible for the early conflicts between Muslims and the decline of the Ottoman Empire. Kisakürek's publications included the Turkish translation of The Protocols of the Elders of Zion and praise for Henry Ford's The International Jew, as well as a political program in which he wrote: "Chief among these treacherous and insidious elements to be cleansed are the Dönmes and the Jews.". Kisakürek sought to replace the Kemalist secular notion of nationalism by an Islamist one. Within Turkish Islamism, he represented the concept of "Islamization from above" through the capture of government. In his own words, having "learned to read and to write from his grandfather in very young ages", Kisakürek became "crazy about limitless, trivia reading" until the age of twelve starting from "groups of sentences belonging to lower class writers of the French" Having been involved in literature with such a reading passion, Necip Fazil states that his "poetry started at the age of twelve" and that his mother said "how much I would like you to be a poet" by showing the "poetry notebook of a girl with tuberculosis" lying on the bed next to his mother's bed when he went to visit her staying at the hospital, and adds: "My mother's wish appeared to me as something that I fed inside but I was not aware of until twelve. The motive of existence itself. I decided inside with my eyes on the snow hurling on the window of the hospital room and the wind howling; I will be a poet! And I became". The first published poem of Necip Fazil is "Kitabe", a poem that was later included in his book Örümcek Agi (Spider Web) with the title "Bir Mezar Tasi"(A Gravestone); it was also published in the Yeni Mecmua (New Magazine) dated 1 July 1923. By 1939, his poems and articles were appearing in magazines such as Yeni Mecmua, Milhi Mecmua, Anadolu, Hayat and Varlik, and Cumhuriyet newspaper. The Karamanlides or simply Karamanlides are Greek-Orthodoxes, Turkish-speaking people native to the Karaman and Cappadocia regions of Anatolia. Today, a majority of the population lives within Greece, though there is a notable diaspora in Western Europe and North America. Karamanlides were Greek-Orthodox Christians in Central Anatolia who had spoken Turkish as their primary language. The term is geographical, derived from the 13th-century Beylik of Karaman. This was the first Turkish kingdom to use Turkish as its official language and originally the term would only refer to the inhabitants of the town of Karaman or from the region of Karaman. After the Christians in the area were exchanged with a Muslim population of Greece in 1923, the title became a label for local Muslim inhabitants. Historically, the Karamanlides spoke Karamanli Turkish. Its vocabulary drew overwhelmingly from Turkic words with many Greek loan words. The language should not be confused with Cappadocian Greek, which was spoken in the same region during the same timeframe but is derived from the Greek language. While the official Ottoman Turkish was written in the Arabic script, the Karamanlides used the Greek alphabet for writing its form of Turkish. (Source: Wikipedia).
