It was published in a number of editions over a half century and was continuously revised and updated to include new illustrations and updated information. Sebastian Münster (1488-1552) was a cosmographer and professor of Hebrew who taught at Tübingen, Heidelberg, and Basel. He settled in the latter in 1529 and died there, of plague, in 1552. As a young man, Münster joined the Franciscan order and studied philosophy in Heidelberg. He also studied geography and mathematics in Loewen, as well as Hebrew at Freiburg. In 1512, he was ordained as a priest and taught philosophy and theology at Tübingen from 1514 to 1518. While in Tübingen, he also conducted further studies in geography. He moved to Basel in 1518 and published a Hebrew grammar, one of the first books in Hebrew published in Germany. In 1521 Münster moved again, back to Heidelberg, where he continued to publish Hebrew texts and the first German-produced books in Aramaic. After converting to Protestantism in 1529, he took over the chair of Hebrew at Basel, where he published his main Hebrew work, a two-volume Old Testament with a Latin translation. Münster made himself the center of a large network of scholars from whom he obtained geographic descriptions, maps, and directions. He published his first known map, a map of Germany, in 1525. Three years later, he released a treatise on sundials. In 1540, he published Geographia universalis vetus et nova, an updated edition of Ptolemy's Geographia. In addition to the Ptolemaic maps, Münster added 21 modern maps. One of Münster's innovations was to include one map for each continent, a concept that would influence Ortelius and other early atlas makers. The Geographia was reprinted in 1542, 1545, and 1552. Münster is best known today for his Cosmographia universalis, the first German-language description of the world. It was first published in 1554 and contained 471 woodcuts and 26 maps over 6 volumes. Many of the maps were taken from the Geographia and modified over time. It was released in at least 46 editions in 6 languages by 1650, with 21 German editions alone. The Cosmographia was widely used in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and the text, woodcuts, and maps all influenced geographical thought for generations.".
New Arabic Original full crown leather bdg. Large roy. 8vo. (25 x 17 cm). In Arabic. 6 volumes set: ([63], 3555 p.). Tabaqât-e a'lâm al-Shî'a. Nuqabâ' al-Bashar fî al-Qarn al-Râbi' 'Ashar. 6 volumes set. Edited by Sayyid Muhammad Tabatabyi Behbahani. Tehrani was born on 11 Rabi?a I 1293/6 April 1876, into a mercantile family of Tehran that had strong religious interests; his father, ?âjj 'Ali, participated actively in the celebrated tobacco boycott of 1308/1891 and later wrote a book on the history of the movement. Aqa Bozorg received his initial education from private tutors in Tehran before proceeding to the ?atabat in 1315/1897. (1313/1895 in Rahnema-ye ketab, p. 525), where he spent the rest of his life, with the exception of four brief return visits to Iran and two short journeys to Syria, Egypt, and the ?ejaz. Among his teachers in Najaf were A?und Molla Mo?ammad-Ka?em ?orasani, Sayyed Mo?ammad-Ka?em Yazdi, Say?-al-sari?a E?fahani and ?ajji Mirza ?osayn Nuri. He was particularly close to the first of these, working as his amanuensis and assisting in the composition of his major work on feqh, al-Kefaya. On the death of ?orasani in 1329/1911, he left Najaf for Samarra to join the circle of Mirza Mo?ammad-Taqi Sirazi. He stayed there until 1354/1935, returning then to Najaf which remained his home until his death. While in Samarra, he conceived, and began to execute, the plan of a comprehensive bibliographical survey of all classes of literature produced by Shi?ite authors. His original intention was to refute a statement by the Christian Arab litterateur, Jorji Zaydan, belittling the Shi?ite contribution to Arabic letters. However, the survey that Aqa Bozorg produced, al-?ari?a ela ta?anif al-si?a, went far beyond this polemical purpose to become the main achievement of his career and a major contribution to Islamic scholarship. In al-?ari?a, the titles of all books written by Shi?ite authors are listed alphabetically, together with a brief indication of authorship and content, as well as place and date of publication in the case of printed works, and location in the case of manuscripts. Aqa Bozorg returned to Najaf in 1354/1935 and established a press (Ma?ba?at al-sa?ada) to print the first volume of al-?ari?a, but was soon obliged to sell it (see Rahnema-ye ketab, p. 526). Other arrangements were then made for the printing in Najaf of the second and third volumes, but all subsequent volumes-with the exception of the thirteenth and fourteenth-were published in Tehran. Twenty-two volumes have appeared to date; seven more await publication (For full bibliographical details concerning al-?ari?a, see ?akimi, pp. 543-45). Aqa Bozorg also compiled a biographical dictionary of Shi?ite scholars as a companion to al-?ari?a. The dictionary has the general title ?abaqat a?lam al-si?a, but each section, pertaining to the scholars of a given century, also has a separate title. Three sections have been published so far: Nawabe? al-rowwat fi rabe?at al-me?at (Beirut, 1390/1970), dealing with Shi?ite traditionists of the 4th Islamic century; al-Keram al-mobarrara fi'l-qarn al-?ale? ba?d al-?asara (Najaf, 1374-77/1954-57), on scholars of the 13th century; and Noqaba? al-basar fi'l-qarn al-rabe? ?asar (Najaf, 1373-88/1953-68), on scholars of the 14th century (?akimi, pp. 549-51). In addition to these multi-volume works, Aqa Bozorg wrote a number of less voluminous books, including a survey of some 600 biographers of Shi?ite traditionists, Mo?affa 'l-maqal fi mo?annefi al-rejal (Tehran, 1337 S./1958); a biography of Mirza ?asan Sirazi, Hadiyat al-razi ela 'l-mojadded al-Sirazi (Najaf, 1392/1972, Pers. tr., Mirza-ye Sirazi, Tehran, 1362/1983); a polemic against Sunni concept of ejtehad, Tawzi? al-rasad fi ta?ri? ?a?r al-ejtehad (unpublished); and a defense of the textual integrity of the Koran, al-Naqd al-la?if fi nafy al-ta?rif ?an al-Qor?an al-sarif (unpublished); and a brief biography of Shaikh Abu Ja?far ?usi (Zendagani-e Say? ?usi, Tehran, 1360 S.

It contributed to his return as directeur-général des finances in 1788, after his dismissal in 1781. It is a valuable book "to those who would study how the finances of France were managed in the last days of the old regime." (Palgrave 1894-1901). "The work was extremely popular (it is said to have sold 80.000 copies, despite being in three volumes) and served to promote the author's reputation." (Carpenter, Economic bestsellers, p. 23). See Krees, Carpenter, Goldsmith, Einaudi.

George Buchanan (1827-1906), surgeon, son of Moses Steven Buchanan (1796?1860) surgeon to the Glasgow Royal Infirmary and lecturer on anatomy in the Portland Street medical school from 1836 to 1841, when he was appointed professor of anatomy in the Andersonian University. George Buchanan was educated at the University of Glasgow and went on to study under his father and others at the Andersonian University, he became M.D. St. Andrews and L.R.C.S. Edinburgh, and in 1852 fellow of the Royal Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. "In early life Buchanan volunteered to have chloroform anaesthesia demonstrated on himself, when his father performed a minor operation on him. He began to practise in Glasgow, but in 1856 he went to the Crimea as a civil surgeon. He returned to Glasgow at the end of the war, and was one of the first to practise there purely as a consulting surgeon. In 1860, when he succeeded his father as professor of anatomy in the Andersonian University, he was also appointed surgeon to the Glasgow Royal Infirmary. He soon became known as a bold and skilful operator, and as a good teacher. He was the first to point out (in 1865 and 1867) the possibility and safety of removing half the tongue in cases of cancer, and he was among the first surgeons to remove the upper jaw (in 1864 and 1869). He gave reasons for preferring lithotrity to lithotomy in operating for stone in the adult male, in 1868, and he was the first to perform ovariotomy successfully in the west of Scotland, in 1863."?(Oxford DNB). 1. First edition, [6], 255, [1]pp., 4 large folding engraved plates of various different ploughs (neatly laid-down onto linen), later green cloth. James Small, agriculturist and plough maker, was born at Upsettlington in the parish of Ladykirk, Berwickshire. He served an apprenticeship with a carpenter and plough maker at Hutton, Berwickshire, and about 1758 he went to Yorkshire to work for a Mr Robertson, maker of wagons and carriages at Doncaster. He returned to Scotland in 1763 and started to experiment with ploughs to establish which worked with the least draught. He enjoyed patronage from several leaders of Scottish society. Henry Home, Lord Kames, encouraged him in the publication of his treatise. Sir John Sinclair, a leader of progressive agricultural opinion in Scotland, was another champion of Small and his work. Small did not forget his first investor, Renton, who in 1784 became the dedicatee of his "Treatise of Ploughs and Wheel-Carriages." The book made Small the first to set out the scientific principles of plough design in print, building upon and clarifying the work of previous thinkers on the subject as well as expressing his own theories. This treatise was the standard text on plough design for fifty years. Provenance: The Lawes Agriculture Library, Rothamsted Research Institute. Rothamsted, p.136; Not in Perkins; Fussell II, pp.98-9.
8vo., First US Edition [Later Issue]; original pictorial mustard cloth blocked and lettered in black, backstrip lettered in gilt and black, very neatly rebacked with old backstrip laid down, original printed endpapers wholly preserved, covers very lightly age-soiled (but every detail of the blocking bright and clear), corners very lightly bruised without material damage, a remarkably bright, clean copy. HARDY'S FIRST BOOK PUBLISHED IN THE US AND THE SECOND EDITION OF THE WORK OVERALL. Hardy's second novel 'Under the Greenwood Tree' was first published by Tinsley in 1872, one of the 'best press-noticed' books sold by that publisher. Under the terms of Tinsley's new agreement with Holt of New York it was then issued by the latter in their popular 'Leisure House' series in June 1873, the first of Hardy's works to be so issued in the US. His first novel 'Desperate Remedies' (1871) did not appear in the series until March 1874. From the series catalogue present on the front endpapers it is clear that this is a later issue (at least 1881 since the list includes 'A Laodician'). Most volumes in the 'Leisure Hour' series were severally reissued with updated endpapers. This copy has been expertly rebacked. The original, elaborately blocked, backstrip is virtually complete with just a few millimetres missing at extreme head and tail. The original endpapers, which carry a detailed catalogue of the 'Leisure Hour' series catalogue printed in red, are all complete and virtually unmarked. The top edge is mildly dust-soiled but this does not extend to the text, which also shows practically no trace of the usual foxing and spotting. A NOTABLE COPY AND A RARE SURVIVAL. See Purdy, p.8 et seq. NCBEL III 981.
8vo., First Edition, with frontispiece, and illustrations and facsimiles in the text; handsomely bound in red full crushed morocco, back gilt with five raised bands, second and fourth compartments lettered and ruled in gilt, all other compartments tooled and ruled in gilt, gilt top, hand-made endpapers, a most attractive copy ideal as a gift or for presentation. The first of Reid's two famous accounts culminates with the author's 'home run' in 1942. Includes a detailed list of escapees. Reid's classic of POW life and escape began a virtual sub-industry (of astonishingly variable quality) including dozens of later books, several feature films, countless magazine pieces and a long-running TV series. There is, however, no mistaking the calibre of the original. Now that Colditz is to become (in part at least) a youth hostel, interest in its wartime role will only grow. Enser, p. 151.

A PRESENTATION COPY FROM SIR JOHN (LATER VISCOUNT) SIMON TO MAJOR A W H JAMES WITH THE FORMER'S SIGNED HOLOGRAPH INSCRIPTION ON FRONT WRAPPER. A FINE AND RELEVANT A.L.s FROM SIMON TO JAMES IS MOUNTED ON REAR ENDPAPER. The letter is written from HQ, Royal Flying Corps, where Simon served briefly on Lord Trenchard's staff during WWI. Major James has noted the context in a neat hand on inner wrapper: 'Immediately after the trial John Simon came out to HQ, RFC, France, and was attached under instruction to my squadron, No. 6, at Abeele. I had known Simon when I was at Cambridge, and he and Ernest Burge had a hunting box at Huntingdon. John Simon, whom I got to know very well later, in the same mess at HQ. In the sensational trial of Lieutenant [Douglas] Malcolm of the Royal Artillery for the murder of Anton Baumberg [Count de Borch], Simon led the Defence. After the summing-up by the Judge [Justice McCardie] the Jury retired and after twenty-five minutes' absence returned a verdict of 'Not Guilty'. RARE, AND IN THIS CASE CONTEXTUALLY UNIQUE.
