196126894New York: Pocket Books Inc. GC-768. Very Good. 1961. Cardinal Edition. Softcover First Printing. a good sound copy with only light wear a tiny bit of damage at lower rear hinge. Mass Market PB The first U.S. paperback printing of Werfel's epic of the early days of the Armenian genocide. Controversial to this day ask a Turk it was first published in the U.S. by The Viking Press in 1934 the original German edition had come out the year before and had no additional American editions until the appearance of this one more than a quarter-century later -- which suggests that the same forces of denial and suppression primarily emanating from the Turkish government were at play in the publishing world as in the motion picture industry where protests and pressure applied by the Turks prevented M-G-M which had owned the movie rights to the book since the 1930s from ever getting a film adaptation off the ground. One very bad one was produced independently in the early 1980s after M-G-M had divested itself of the rights and washed its hands of the whole thing. . Pocket Books, Inc. (GC-768) paperback books

Hardcover. good sound book just a touch of wear to extremities light spotting to fore-edge vintage price sticker from San Francisco department store The White House on rear pastedown; jacket has 2.5" split at bottom of rear foldover minor soiling/creasing to rear panel. "Perhaps this is the first book to touch on that particular aspect of war; the soldiers and their women. The domestic histories of four or five men brought together by chance into the same platoon forms the chief theme of the book. Through the stories of these farmers and tradespeople and their wives we understand the horror and the misery that grows out of the enforced separation of the sexes." Wendler 1895-1968 was a German writer and educator who published several novels and also wrote in what we would today call the Young Adult genre. This book his very uncommon first novel published in Germany in 1929 as "Soldiers Marieen" was founded largely on his own military experience in World War I. When the Nazis came to power he was dismissed from his position as rector at a Catholic school and a number of his books were banned; he remained in Germany writing sometimes under a pseudonym and also working as a screenwriter thanks in large measure to his longtime acquaintance with producer-director Robert Stemmle. . Very Good.

Observing "That by Disputes about Religion Contentions only are inflamed" the author seeks a solution to this "thornie" issue. "That both Church and State may enjoy each their own Priviledges is the design of this Essay." The University of Glasgow's entry on OCLC names John Pollock as the author.
England's established Church causes the author to advocate a greater involvement of civil government in religious matters than prevails in the United States. But otherwise his prescription is very much like modern American conceptions of religious liberty: the Church is in charge of spiritual matters and gives "all due Respect and Obedience to the Civil Magistrate; whatever with Scripture warrant they can allow him will not be wanting." The Magistrate provides the environment for the free exercise of worship. "Even Heathen Magistrates may and ought to aid and help the Church. Whence it is that by God's Command Prayers are to be made for them." Differences of religious opinion do not justify disobedience to the civil ruler.
OCLC 181867601 1- U Glasgow as of February 2015.
