A study on a chronicle of final phase of the Cretan War (War of Candia), 1666-1669 is the name given to the Fifth Ottoman-Venetian War. Grand Vizier Köprülü Fazil Ahmed initiated large preparations in the winter of 1665 / 66, and dispatched 9,000 men to bolster the Ottoman forces in Crete. An Ottoman peace proposal, which would have allowed Venice to keep Candia against an annual payment of tribute was rejected, and in May 1666, the Ottoman army, under the personal leadership of the Grand Vizier, departed from Thrace for southern Greece, whence it would embark for Crete during the winter. In February 1667, the Venetians received significant reinforcements from France and Savoy, totaling 21 warships and some 6,000 men, but, as in past years, disagreements among the leaders of the various contingents over precedence (France, the Papal States, Malta, Naples, Sicily contributed ships and men) hampered operations. Francesco Morosini, now again Captain General, sought to engage the Ottomans, but they avoided battle, and using their superior resources and bases, they steadily kept their forces on Crete supplied. The only allied success in 1667 was the repulsion of an Ottoman raid on Cerigo (Kythera). First edition.<br /><br />Francisco del Paso y Troncoso 1842-1916 sixth son in a family of 10 born to Pedro del Paso y Troncoso and Teodora Medina in Veracruz. He was locally educated for a mercantile career but in 1867 his family sent him to Mexico City to prepare for a future in Medicine. However through accident and luck he turned to preparation a history of medicine in Mexico. He laid out an elaborate plan that encompassed examination of Aztec science as a prelude to that in the colonial and national periods. His completed parts of aboriginal botany astronomy and medicine appeared in the MNA <i>Anales</i>. He never finished his thesis or received a degree. He was appointed Visitor to the National Museum in 1888 and successively was named acting and then permanent director 1889 a post he nominally held until his death. He reorganized the publication programs rehabilitated the library and undertook other salutary administrative reforms as well as sponsoring national scientific expeditions. From 1892 through 1902 he remained directory of the national Museum on extended leave while in Europe where he spent 23 years searching out copying and preparing for publication a vast store of prime documentary materials for the pre-Conquest and colonial history of Mexico. At his death in 1916 most of the collected materials remained unpublished. The Mexican government was able to repatriate or purchased most of his collection but much remains lost.<br /><br />George McClelland Foster Jr born in Sioux Falls South Dakota on October 9 1913 died on May 18 2006 at his home in the hills above the campus of the University of California Berkeley where he served as a professor from 1953 to his retirement in 1979 when he became professor emeritus. His contributions to anthropological theory and practice still challenge us; in more than 300 publications his writings encompass a wide diversity of topics including acculturation long-term fieldwork peasant economies pottery making public health social structure symbolic systems technological change theories of illness and wellness humoral medicine in Latin America and worldview. The quantity quality and long-term value of his scholarly work led to his election to the National Academy of Sciences in 1976. Virtually all of his major publications have been reprinted and/or translated. In Turkish. 112 p., many ills. his catalogue includes 226 magics and illusions of Hasna Zati Sungur, (1898-1984), was an internationally recognized Turkish stage magician. His professional magic shows at the Berlin Wintergarten theatre brought him great success. With a group of artists, he went on tour in France, Italy, Spain, North America, and then in 1922 in South America. He toured in Chile, Paraguay, Brezilya and Argentina with his own team of 10-12 magician's assistants and two trucks full of material. He gained great fame previously with the stage name "Count Sati von Richmond" and later with "Zati Bey". In 1924, he started to develop the magic trick of the thin model sawing, accomplishing its final version in 1930. This trick would be a contribution to the stage magic world. Zati Sungur returned home on May 7, 1936, and began to perform his shows in the Ses Theatre (aka French Theatre) in Istanbul. His fame spread quickly. He was awarded with lifelong exemption from city tax after a show attended by President Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. He toured across Turkey and in countries of Eastern Europe and the Middle East. He received the "Grand Prize" at the 1975 Magic convention in Karlovy Vary, then in Czechoslovakia, with his trick "Magic Dice". In 1981, he was honored with the title "King of the Magicians" at the convention in the same city. He retired from active stage life in 1966, and established "Universal Sihirbazlik ve Illüzyon Hünerleri Stüdyosu" (Universal Stage Magic and Illusion Skills Studio), where he exhibited the magic trick instruments he had invented. His studio became the biggest production and distribution center in Eastern Europe and the Middle East. He wrote and published two books about magic tricks and instruments. First and Only Edition.
