14990One of the most influential women's publications of the early 20th century the periodical was founded by Carrie Chapman Catt the head of the National American Woman Suffrage Association NAWSA. According to the terms of a bequest from a Mrs. Frank Leslie the money Catt inherited was to be used to further the cause of woman suffrage. Accordingly Catt founded The Woman Citizen by merging three suffrage journals the Woman's Journal the National Suffrage News and Woman Voter. Rose Young was the journal's editor in chief and Alice Stone Blackwell the former editor of the Woman's Journal was a contributing editor. The bequest ensured that the Citizen remained solvent and that it was able to reach a wide and influential audience. Every congressman was added to the mailing list free of charge.

This collection includes the February 1919 and March 1919 issues which comment on important social and political activities in the year before US women's national suffrage in 1920. Among the concerns depicted in satirical cartoons on the journal covers are men's reactions to suffrage and prejudice. The February 15 1919 edition illustrates a gentleman unsuccessfully battling a snowdrift of "Present Day Issues" with his three-pronged pitchfork. And the March 1 1919 edition depicts a well-fed gentleman in a waist coat who supports liberty except as it extends to women as he says "I'm for Liberty. Women Er er er that is if etc."

Winning the enfranchisement of American women was always at the forefront of the Citizen's mission but the publication also reported on such issues as child labour and the status of woman suffrage around the world. These two editions are strong examples and they raise questions that continue to be timely in debates about gender equality today. Within the pages of the February edition suffrage and especially the 50th Annual Convention of the NAWSA is of central importance; in addition to running a headline article "Call to Convention" the issue provides news on Senate rulings in response to suffrage and state by state reports on their own amendments. By comparison the March edition considers the importance of "Women Who Own Securities" as well as an article exploring "Is There Room at the Top for Women in Wall Street"

After American women won the vote in 1920 the Citizen continued publication redirecting its editorial agenda to the political education of women. Both journals are in very good condition. unknown books
