1843000902London: Thomas Rodd 1843. 16pp disbound from a volume at some point t.e.g. Slightly browned one or two spots of foxing but generally clean. Wise notes that "In 1843 when advertising the present pamphlet for sale Rodd asserted that it was a facsimile reprint of an alleged original edition of which the author was said to have printed twenty copies in 1816. No example of this mysterious original has ever been unearthed . My own opinion is that no original ever existed . The motto 'We pity the plumage but forget the dying bird' was taken by Shelley from Paine's 'Rights of Man' 1817 Pt.I p. 24 'He Burke pities the plumage but forgets the dying bird'. This clearly denies any impression of the address dated 1816". The pamphlet decries the difference between the public concern for the death of the Princess and their indifference to the plight of the poorest in society plus ca change and also examines the execution of the leaders of the Pentrich Rising. Wise 'A Shelley Library' page 46. First Edition. Disbound. Good. 8vo. [Thomas Rodd] Paperback
258999 October 1982. On his letterhead 27 Bishop’s Road London. See his entry in the Oxford DNB. 2pp 4to. In good condition lightly aged. Folded for postage and in stamped and postmarked envelope with Wesker’s address printed on it addressed to Furness in Battersea. One of a number of letters from British poets in response to enquiries from Paul Furness with regard to their pub memories. Addressed to ‘Dear Mr Furness’ and signed ‘Arnold Wesker’. Begins: ‘You must understand this about Jews: they descend from parents who fled pogroms which where sic usually lanched sic from the inns where peasants assembled and became drunk.’ Turning to his own experience he continues: ‘Neither I nor my family nor my circle of friends frequented pubs. The ignorant gathered there to realease sic their beery prejudices and hatreds to stimulate dutch courage & to give reign to a spurious imagination. / We gathered in our kitchens & shared tea sandwiches bread pudding matzos dipped in egg & fried & - if we were lucky - a little chicken-soup.’ He states that he still doesn’t ‘have the pub habit’ before turning to the ‘angry young men’ who ‘were never a group’ and ‘shared no social life’. ‘We weren’t very angry either. We simply had energy & that special joy which comes from recognition. I was rarely angry - except with fools idiot critics and I’m afraid drunks.’ He concludes: ‘David Mercer drank himself to death & was only ever maudlin when drunk as I find most people drunk become. Maudlin or self centred. Conversation is impossible. They only want to be heard.’ He ends with apologies that he ‘cant be more helpful’. 9 October 1982. 258773 November 1899; 198 Strand W.C. London on cancelled letterhead of The Bungalow Westgate-on-Sea. A significant figure unaccountably unrepresented in the Oxford DNB. An interesting item casting light on the way business was conducted in the world of nineteenth-century newspaper proprietorship. 4pp 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition lightly aged and worn. Folded for postage. The recipient evidently a fellow newspaper proprietor is not named and the letter is signed ‘William Ingram’. Begins: ‘My dear Sir / I have talked over the matter of purchase of your papers with my brother and he is of the opinion that our deal ought to include the 3d gardener’s paper as the two have always been worked together - he thinks ten years purchase less 10% would be a fair price - the 10% would cover all commission and cost of audit examination etc - this would give you a clear 9 years’ purchase’. In Ingram’s opinion the recipient ‘would do well to realise as in these days of never ending competition the older one gets the more difficult it is to tackle the worry of these incessant attacks’. For his own part he would not ‘undertake any new ventures’ if he did not have ‘young sons to help me’. 3 November 1899; 198 Strand, W.C. 19507522Winnipeg Manitoba: . Nakl. Ukraïns'koï knyharni The Ukrainian Bookstore & The Canadian Farmer Publishing House N.D. Circa 1950's. Fourth Edition. Softcover. pp. 220. 12mo. measuring 14.5 x 21.5 cm. Thrice-stapled illustrated light-green card covers. Driver notes that "the text is in Ukrainian except for the recipe titles which are in English followed by the Ukrainian name. The English terms for certain ingredients such as baking powder have been used but in the Ukrainian alphabet i.e. they have been rendered phonetically not translated. Although the periodical Canadian Farmer is cited in the introduction as the organization that financed and published the cookbook its name does not appear on the title-page. The introduction refers to the need for a good Ukrainian-language manual for cooking in the English way. Peasants in the Old Country the introduction says worked so hard in the fields that they cooked only to meet the need for food. This cookbook was designed to help Ukrainians in Canada to learn about the cooking and baking expected of North American women. The introduction states that some of the text is translated from The White House Cook Book popular with Americans. O93.1 The White House Cook Book by Hugo Zieman and Mrs. Fanny Lemira Camp Gillette was an American cookbook but it was widely distributed in Canada. Part II of the text is Old-Country-style recipes prepared by Leontyna Luchakivska but with recipe names in English" with a third part dedicated to "Directions for Health" home remedies. Light wear to the covers slight crease to the centre contents uniformly without blemish with bright clean and unmarked leaves and firm sound binding; very good. Rare in commerce in this edition and state.

¶ See Driver Citation No. M128.1 pp. 983-984 who dates this edition to the 1950s. She further notes in her preface: In 1937 the Ukrainian Book Store at 660 Main Street in Winnipeg published in the Ukrainian language a collection of recipes for the preservation of fruits and vegetables by Mary Hiltz a well-known professor at the Manitoba Agricultural College M96.1. After the Second World War the same business published two recipe books: Ukrainian-English Cook Book M128.1 written in Ukrainian except for bilingual recipe titles intended to help immigrants learn cooking in Canada where expectations differed from those for peasant families in the old country.. Unassuming modest brown leather over boards; four raised bands to spine five compartments. Printed in Greek type with the Latin translation on the facing page. Extremities rubbed some scuffing some chipping to the spine ends. Internally very clean and unmarked with tight sound binding. Glasgow born Robert Foulis 1707-1776 was a Scottish printer whose work had considerable influence on the printers and publishers of his time. Initially apprenticing as a master barber he was encouraged to take up the trade of printing and bookselling at the suggestion of his friend Francis Hutcheson of the University of Glasgow. Beginning in 1741 Foulis engaged in the selling of books in Glasgow and it was very shortly thereafter in 1742 that he set up his own press. He was appointed printer to the University of Glasgow in 1743 and in the same year produced the first Greek book printed in Glasgow the Peri herm neias in both Greek and Latin of the pseudo-Demetrius Phalereus. "Five years later he went into partnership with his brother Andrew and by 1775 had produced more than 500 separate editions including an edition of Homer 4 vol. folio 175658 Callimachus small quarto 1755 Thomas Grays Poems quarto 1768 Herodotus Thucydides and Xenophon with Latin translations and one of the first Scottish editions of Shakespeare. The Foulises best works were distinguished by their excellent layout legibility and accuracy." EB April 2019. Some of the credit for their achievement is attributable to the renowned type-maker and punch-cutter Alexander Wilson from whom they purchased their types. Robert Foulis died on 2 June 1776 in Edinburgh.

In Aedibus Academicis Excudebat Robertus Foulis Academiae Typographus. hardcover
