Accompagné d'une traduction abrégée par Chen Jie d'un essai de l'historien de l'art soviétique A. D. ABOUT: Rare anthology devoted to modern Soviet wood engraving and printmaking, published in Shanghai by Sanjian Shuwu and distributed through Uchiyama Bookstore (內山書店). The volume gathers fifty-nine collotype reproductions of woodcuts by several leading figures of the Russian and Soviet printmaking revival of the 1920s and 1930s, including Vladimir Favorsky, Dmitri Mitrokhin, Alexei Kravchenko and Pavel Pavlinov. Accompanied by Chen Jie's abridged translation of an essay by Soviet art historian A. D. Chegodaev, as well as a preface, plate catalogue and postface, the work was conceived as an introduction to contemporary Soviet printmaking for Chinese readers. A remarkable testimony to Sino-Soviet artistic exchanges in Republican-era Shanghai, it belongs to the context of the New Woodcut Movement (新興木刻運動), then flourishing under the influence of left-wing intellectual circles and cultural networks associated with Uchiyama Bookstore and the figure of Lu Xun. The reproductions were assembled from Soviet books, periodicals and documentary sources discovered in the early 1930s, notably through the journal Graphika. A. This conference also known as The Washington Naval Conference; The Washington Arms Conference or the Washington Disarmament Conference was a meeting of delegates from nine nations - the USA Japan China France Britain Italy Belgium the Netherlands and Portugal. This group which very deliberately excluded Russia met in this interesting post WWI world to discuss and negotiate their interests in the Pacific and the East Asian region. Three major treaties were some of the results of the conference: Four-Power Treaty; Five-Power Treaty also known at the Washington Naval Treaty and the Nine-Power Treaty together with a number of other smaller agreements. These treaties helped keep the peace throughout the 1920s and also helped Japan build up her navy and work on consolidating her position in China. The decisions and actions that took place at this conference clearly had an effect on the lead up to World War II in East Asia and it can be argued still have echoes today on relationships with and within the region today. . 外交部. Paper browned and a little soiled in places small holes at some fold points and edges neatly repaired with washi tissue on the verso. A handsome and striking map. This extra-large world map is richly illustrated with numerous photographic images showcasing the overseas activities of the Japanese Imperial Navy. It traces the sailing routes of naval training ships between 1925 and 1928 and features several black and white photographs of the ships and their crew during visits to locations such as Paris Rome Egypt and China.

Inset charts on both sides of the map illustrate the growth of Japanese naval power from 1894 to 1928 in comparison with foreign navies including those of Britain France and Russia.

The timing of the map’s publication is noteworthy. At the time Japan was adhering to naval power limits set in proportion to other nations such as Britain and the United States under the Washington Naval Treaty. However the inset charts clearly show a significant increase in Japanese naval strength over the years. By the 1930s the treaty’s influence had declined and Japan formally withdrew in 1933 following its departure from the League of Nations. . 海軍省. [Kaigunshō]. unknown
