This manuscript is a copy of Kojitsu kenpō 古實獻法 a work concerned with menu composition and the presentation of food for celebratory occasions tied to seasonal festivals including the New Year in January and the Girls’ Festival in March. The text is organised into seven sections comprising a total of one hundred items.<br><br>This copy was most likely produced in the late Edo period. A note on the final page states that the contents are secret and should not be transmitted to outsiders suggesting its use within a restricted or specialist context. <br><br>Several hand-drawn illustrations are included with the text showing in detail the arrangement and presentation of dishes and serving ware appropriate to these ceremonial occasions. . unknown

This set is the fifth in the Chinese military educational poster series. The posters and chemical weapons featured on the images are numbered the chemical weapons numbering from no. 86 to no. 121. Tiny holes in the upper corners of each poster where they have been hung in the past. The posters show signs of wear and tear particularly at the edges some tape repairs to reverse occasional browning and soiling overall good. Text in traditional Chinese. Posters measure 77.5 x 53.5cm. Poster no. 1 features 3 detailed images of WWII American made chemical weapons and their parts. This captivating map designed for children delineates air bases and flight routes surrounding Japan during the late 1930s. It served as a new year supplement within the pages of the children's science magazine "Kodomo no Kagaku" Science for Children presumably issued in the latter part of the 1930s. As events unfolded the Pacific War emerged as an air power-centric conflict and this map adeptly illustrates the strategic positioning of air bases across Asia and the Pacific representing various nations. <br> <br>The map's legend highlights air bases belonging to Britain the US the Soviet Union and France along with their corresponding flight routes. These two kawaraban sheets feature large portraits of the "King of France" and a European woman. The king’s name is transcribed in hiragana as "Furomusuanakaruma" an interesting phonetic rendering. This sheet also includes illustrations of coins from various European countries such as Holland and France as well as China with brief explanations of each. <br> <br>The second sheet presents a Western woman most likely Dutch named "Ta Maria Soitesu." She is depicted with her dog on the right and detailed descriptions of her appearance—fair skin a small mouth hairstyle and dress—are provided. The sheet also notes that Jobutsu Temple in Kanagawa was used by the Dutch as their first consulate around 1860. These two vibrant paintings depict the Daimonji-yaki festival in Kyoto capturing the festive atmosphere of the evening celebration. Historically Daimonji-yaki was held in July according to the lunar calendar though it is now celebrated in August. During this event fires are lit in various shapes on the hills surrounding Kyoto symbolically guiding the spirits of the deceased back to the other world. <br> <br>The first painting showcases the character "dai" 大 illuminated on the hillside. A diverse group of people has gathered to witness the spectacle their faces filled with awe as they gaze at the glowing lights. In the second painting a figure resembling a boat known as the Funagata is depicted on the northern hill of Kyoto. Four individuals including a woman have climbed to the top of a steep roof to get a better view of the lights. While some members of the group appear to be enjoying the view one person seems apprehensive nervously looking down from their elevated position. <br> <br>These paintings beautifully capture the excitement and anticipation of the Daimonji-yaki festival showcasing the diverse reactions and emotions of the spectators as they partake in this traditional celebration in Kyoto. . unknown

Good condition overall. This vibrant sugoroku game sheet served as an advertisement for popular home remedies for common illnesses and injuries — some of which are still sold in Japan today. The game begins at Haneda Aerodrome noted as having opened in 1931 with players choosing to journey eastward or westward to destinations across Europe the Americas and Asia. A striking historical detail is the aborted Shanghai stop reflecting the conflict on the ground at the time while the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics are highlighted as a future event. <br> <br>The final destination is Tokyo depicted in an aerial view at the center of the sheet. Two lower inset maps focus on the Atlantic and European fronts in 1940 and 1941. The first is titled "A battle map of Europe North Africa and West Asia" marking battlefields and battle dates among Germany Britain and France. The second titled "The situation diagram of the battle in the Atlantic Ocean" illustrates areas under German control. This is brightly coloured post-war sugoroku is a "round the world" game and this together with the fukuwarai game printed on the reverse would have been enjoyed by Japanese families during the new year celebrations. The game which is colourfully illustrated covers East Asia Southeast Asia New Guinea Africa Europe and North and South Americas with the final goal being returning to Japan and visiting the Royal Palace in Tokyo. The game was probably printed in the 1960s when overseas travel by jet plane was regarded as a possible dream for many Japanese people. This extra-large world map is richly illustrated with numerous photographic images showcasing the overseas activities of the Japanese Imperial Navy. It traces the sailing routes of naval training ships between 1925 and 1928 and features several black and white photographs of the ships and their crew during visits to locations such as Paris Rome Egypt and China. <br> <br>Inset charts on both sides of the map illustrate the growth of Japanese naval power from 1894 to 1928 in comparison with foreign navies including those of Britain France and Russia. <br> <br>The timing of the map’s publication is noteworthy. At the time Japan was adhering to naval power limits set in proportion to other nations such as Britain and the United States under the Washington Naval Treaty. However the inset charts clearly show a significant increase in Japanese naval strength over the years. Some occasional creasing marking or browning but all in their original wrappers and together making a delightful and fascinating collection reflecting pre-WWII Japanese consumers' desires. Very good condition. This collection of brochures is a showcase of consumer culture in 1930s Osaka. It includes two illustrated catalogue magazines produced by the Osaka branch of the Mitsukoshi Department Store in 1930 and 1931 and a delightfully illustrated catalogue of top winter fashions from the Osaka Daimaru and Takashimaya Department Stores published in 1930 and 1931. All those department stores were regarded as high-fashion and luxury item retailers. There is also a 1930s advertisement for the Chuo Shokudo Central Refectory advertisement on Sakaisuji Street in central Osaka which offers customers western style meals from 10 sen and small dishes from 5 sen very reasonable prices for the period and a very attractively designed advertisement from Takashimaya Department Store Osaka for its range of end-of-year presents including a map showing the lay-out of the store and a delightful art deco cover design. A brochure of Hanwa Dentetsu railway line between Osaka and Wakayama shows autumn events and attractions for families including digging for sweet potato. . unknown

Sixteen delightful small porcelain spinning tops measuring 2.0 x 1.7cm in size each accompanied by ten handsome colour printed product labels heightened in gilt with soft purple cord ties 8.3 x 6cm. An intriguing collection of sake advertising ephemera in very good condition. These sake promotional giveaways and accompanying die-cut cards in the shape of the Order of the Golden Kite are advertisements associated with Meiyo-gura a sake brand sold in Nihonbashi Tokyo. <br> <br>The advertisement describes a koma spinning top attached beneath the bottle top which could also serve as a small entertainment item. Each koma was hexagonal and could be used as a dice or a novelty accessory for drinking games. The value printed on the koma could be redeemed if customers presented both the koma and the accompanying medal card. <br> <br>These redemption promotions were available between 1937 and 1939. However in June 1941 the rationing of sake was introduced firmly ending such promotional schemes. The product labels which were finely printed as these are also informed customers about how to claim these discounts further enhancing the appeal of the product during its promotional period. <br> <br>A curious example of the everyday cultural impacts of Japanese militarism - the Order of the Golden Kite was an award exclusively for military service and was not available to the civilian public. Over the course of the Second Sino-Japanese and Pacific Wars the order would be awarded over 140000 times dwarfing all previous conflicts and reflecting the frenetic nature of Japan's total mobilisation. . 名誉蔵.
