Published by the Winnipeg business community the Winnipeg Board of Trade chiefly for the consumption of business owners traders and merchants and offering rich insight into business activities in the city of Winnipeg and the province at-large. Issues include a summary of board activities updates on provincial legislation relevant to the business community reports from the immigration and land settlement committee amongst others a discussion on the "admittance of large numbers of Mennonites" a complete listing of the executive members calendars of scheduled meetings and much else. Remarkably well-preserved showing only some light rubbing to the cloth extremities contents entirely without blemish with bright clean and unmarked pages and firm sound binding; near fine. Exceedingly scarce in commerce our offering being the only extant copy available at time of cataloguing. Equally scarce amongst institutional holdings corresponds to OCLC #855384448. Comprises of a rich selection of recipes as compiled by the wives of the Winnipeg Jets as part of their charitable efforts with proceeds directed to Winnipeg-based women's shelter The Osbourne House. Divided into recipes by each Jets player and their spouses and families accompanied with their black-and-white photographs and portraits. Bright clean and unmarked. Scarce in commerce. 19107908Winnipeg Manitoba: The Winnipeg Canoe Club N.D. Circa 1910-1915. Softcover. A finely preserved early 20th-century tobacco silk likely issued as a collectible measuring 8.5 x 8.5 cm. Printed on square white silk featuring fringed borders along the top and bottom edges. Bears a lovely lithographed print of a slanted wooden flagpole flying a white triangular pennant bearing the interlaced stylized "WCC" monogram of the Winnipeg Canoe Club housed within a solid red circle. Pictured in the foreground is a lightly colored sketch of a canoe resting on calm blue-green water set against a faint sky in the background. Centered beneath the image is the caption "WINNIPEG CANOE CLUB" with "WINNIPEG MAN." directly below in a classic serif type. A small series number "25" is printed in the extreme lower-left corner possibly denoting its sequence in a broader collectors set of cigarette silks. Quite rare and uncommon Winnipeg Canoe Club ephemera. Near fine. <br/><br/>¶ Often referred to as "cigarette silks" or "tobacco silks" these small textiles were highly popular promotional inserts distributed within tobacco packaging - frequently by manufacturers like Imperial Tobacco - to build brand loyalty during the early part of the last century. Staples started; wrappers lightly soiled; faint soiling to internal pages.<br /> <br /> ¶ An elegant tabbed printed bar menu for the Venetian Court the main function room of The Australia with pages for cocktails and sherry; still wines; champagnes; whiskies gins ales stout lagers cider; ports brandies liqueurs; and cigars cigarettes.<br /> <br /> <br /> Collins Street between Swanston and Elizabeth streets has been since the 1870s one of the most fashionable shopping areas in the centre of Melbourne often referred to as "The Block". In 1879 the Café Gunsler was established. It was one of the most fashionable restaurants and event venues in the city. Refurbished in 1890 as the Vienna Café it was refurbished in 1914-15 and reopened at the height of World War I in October 1916 as the much more patriotically named Café Australia or The Australia. <br /> <br /> <br /> The refurbishment was designed by Walter Burley Griffin who with his wife Marion Mahony Griffin was also the Federal Capital Director of Design and Construction for Australia's new capital Canberra. The refurbishment created a series of rooms an entry bar a Palm Court a Fountain Court leading through to an arched roofed double height dining room the Venetian Court. Decorated with painted murals sculpture and highly patterned plaster-work and specially designed furniture and fittings which are illustrated on p.2 the refurbishment of The Australia highlighted Griffin’s distinctive geometric style. <br /> <br /> <br /> Frequently used for society events functions and balls The Australia and particularly The Venetian Court was the epicentre of Melbourne society in the interwar period. The venue was sold and refurbished again opening in 1939 as Hotel Australia.<br /> <br /> Wenban was a prolific Australian artist and illustrator. He began his career in Sydney as in illustrator before serving in World War I. He then worked in Melbourne as a commercial illustrator before moving to London where he studied and worked for a number of publications including The Illustrated News. The engraved illustrations depict the geometric Collins St facade and the grand Venetian Court that could seat 400 people: both uncommon views of interwar Melbourne.<br /> <br /> Scarce.
