The first volume being an Illustrated Historical Survey and the second being a Dictionary of Factories Artists Technical Terms Et Cetera. The Survey contains 24 colour plates and 192 monochrome plates; collated complete. The Dictionary contains vignette letter illustrations throughout. Tucked into the Survey is a newspaper clipping of Honey's obituary commenting on his life and work after his death at the age of 67. In green cloth bindings with gilt lion design detail to front boards and red and gilt title detailing to the spines; with unclipped dustwrappers. Externally very smart with some shelfwear; minor bumping and fading to the extremities and a few marks. The dustwrappers are bright with some closed tears and loss. The rear hinge on the Dictionary is strained. Internally generally firmly bound only the final page and rear free endpaper in the Dictionary loosening. The pages of both volumes are bright and clean with only scattered spotting. Very Good Indeed Faber and Faber Limited hardcover

With laid-in National Arts Club program detailing a dinner reception for the book. Overall a lovely copy. From the personal library of Mel Gussow an important American theater critic and close friend of Becketts. Eleuthéria was Becketts first completed play written in French in 1947. Director Roger Blin chose to stage Waiting for Godot over Eleuthéria in 1953 and Eleuthéria languished for 40 years until Beckett gave the manuscript to friend and longtime American publisher Barney Rosset. After Becketts death in 1989 Rosset set out to publish the play in English. Despite pushback from Becketts literary executor Jérôme Lindon Rosset published this American translation of the play in 1995. In Mel Gussows New York Times review of the play he writes Eleuthérias value rests partly on the fact that it presages his subsequent plays in particular Waiting for Godot and Krapp's Last Tape. However as a bourgeois comedy with a darkly sardonic heart it has its own authority and impudent wit. Mel Gussow 1933 - 2005 was an American theater and movie critic who contributed more than 4000 articles and reviews to the New York Times over a span of 35 years. Gussow first met Beckett in 1978 and the two continued to meet and converse informally on life and art about once a year for the next 10 years until Becketts death in 1989 their final meeting was at Becketts French nursing home where he later passed away. Gussow drew from these meetings to write his book Conversations with and about Beckett 1996 - one in a series of four Conversation books the others featuring conversations with playwrights Arthur Miller Harold Pinter and Tom Stoppard. Gussows Beckett book is particularly illuminating given that the enigmatic playwright famously declined to do interviews for most of his lifetime. Gussow also wrote Becketts NYT obituary in 1989 titled "Samuel Beckett is Dead at 83; His Godot Changed Theater.". Singed By Publisher. First Limited Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine. Five 8x10 promotional Jazz drummer photos the 2 Kruppas and 1 Lewis are gelatin silver and the 2 Bellson are halftones all variously inscribed and / or signed. The signature on the Lewis photo is signed in the photos' negative and thus not "live" ink - as are the other four "live ink" autographs in this collection. The company "Long & McQuade" is the largest chain of musical instrument retailers in Canada and as we are unsure who Lou Williams Jr. & Sr. are assume that they may have been music store owners. One of the Louie Bellson photos has "March 18 / '79 at Convocation Hall / Toronto Ont." written in blue ink on the verso. All photos a touch age toned w. only minor wear. A nice collection of drummer signed photos showcasing three of Jazzdom's most legendary and time-honored players. unknown
